Such a relief after hearing that I'm not the only one who struggles so much with watching movies in a foreign language. I was actually questioning myself whether I was normal. So many people say things like oh I just watched movies and picked up a language and I am like WTF how come?! I'm not saying it's not helpful, it definitely is but rather for reinforcing vocab, grama, and practicing listing skills but it is not a magic method. I won't suddenly start understanding everything without looking up for words, etc I have been watching everything in English for 3 years with subtitles but I don't know when I will be able to switch them off. So Mark's words were comforting in a way but at the same time daunting as his French must be really good if he does stands-up. Will I ever switch these bloody subtitles off or no FFS just kidding ;) ok not really, we all know how frustrating it is to want it so much and not feel much progress.
I was a Hong Konger and thought my English is quite good ... until I moved to London last year. Here in London, I cannot understand the content of the chatting among the local people (of course when they speak to me, I can understand well since they adjust the speed and choices of words). In your past episodes, I was able to understand nearly all the English even when there were guests (and I enjoyed more for those with guests). For this episode, however, I can barely understand (less than half) of the words from your guest, Mark, and yet it was very very enjoyable to listen to as the accent is very cozy and is similar to that I can't understand here in London. For months I has been seeking of how to improve my listening of conversational English with "London Accent" (which is not "RP") , I think now I have a chance of finding some resources: I will definitely search all TV shows and podcast related to your guest Mark Steel. Thanks so much for having him as guest in your podcast.

I love this EP. I was quite frustrated when I was first in the middle of Aussies from various parts of Australia partying. It took me a while before I could come to understand them. They were talking like the fastest train on earth with so many different accents. Amazingly, they could keep their conversation going without me to be sure whether or not they followed what they were saying. However, it was fun.

I also wanted to add that you're right Luke we ( I assume lots of your listeners ) didn't know your guest but thanks to you we got to know him and it was a big deal and pleasure for us too. It was extremely useful and that is exactly what we need. Also, I think your idea of the BBC sound tour sounds fabulous as well. I'm actually attempting at listening to it for the third time. I need to say when I came across your podcast actually I don't know how it happened as I didn't know what podcast means and wasn't aware there was more content like yours, also I got so excited that I can understand a native person that I listened to you only. Don't take it personally I am sure you won't but now you're just too easy lol I still like your podcast but as you know we need to broaden our horizons, listen to different accents, etc. My problem is there are many podcasts for learning English have transcripts but I don't really need them whereas most podcasts for natives don't have them but would be very helpful. I am trying to listen to the drama, I know maybe not be so interesting and educating for some but that is where a lack of understanding. I can listen to the news or Ted talks about a huge event or specific subject but when comes down to meaningless chat at a pub, with neighbors, family, and friends that is where I struggle the most. Also, stand-ups, comedies, and tv shows often refer to celebrities, and politics that's why is very useful to get to know them so keep on doing a great job I am very grateful and looking forward to your next episodes. Seems like I have carried away a bit but wanted to provide proper feedback :)

Thanks a lot for this interesting episode,Luke. Mark seems to be a really nice guy, really cheerful, kind, enthusiastic, genuine..,but he's truly got an East end London accent!. I must say I don't like it that much. There's nothing from Kent or south London in his accent, to be honest. He sounds completely Cockney to me, unlike you. I speak French fluently and I knew the expression "poser un lapin à quelqu'un" I was flabbergasted when You didn't seem to know this expression after marrying a French and living there for so many years, how come?😂 Don't tell me you haven't learnt French after so many years!😆 but you do seem and I'm pretty sure you are open- minded and cosmopolitan like your lovely dad!😊 Looking forward to listening to his new podcast about the new prime minister. There have to be a tiny dementi about word "rabbit" in polish. Rabbit is rabbit, nothing more. But if you said "yea-bunny", it might be received a bit offending depends on context. Yea-bunny is similar to word "jebany", simply speaking, means "fucking" and like in english, can also be used as offend or admiration (ex. It was fucking good!). Luke, love u bro. And please don't get confused by using swear words - if we wanted listen to unnatural british english, we would have been listening fucking BBC 😜

Luke you're an excellent teacher 'but you need to renew your website and make short videos for common errors ' vocabulary ' don't say this say that and so on this will make your channel more popular.

I can understand you very well when you speak, but I had a really hard time understanding this guy. Huge disappointment for me. Oddly enough, I'm so mad at him (short off come on, do you know that your audience is learning the language) when I should be mad at myself for making such slow progress in English.
Seems silly to be angry with either Mark or yourself. His accent is not the one you will have learned. But if you come to the UK you will hear a huge variety of accents, and RP (which is sort of what Luke's is) isn't going to get you very far in Middlesbrough or Glasgow.
