A man suffered from a form of ankylosing spondylitis so severe that his upper body folded onto his thighs. Three parts of his body were ‘connected’ - his chin to his chest, his breastbone to his pubic bone, and his face to his thigh bone. After undergoing four operations at Shenzhen University General Hospital, in which his bones were literally broken and reconstructed, he finally stood straight - after 28 years.

  • Seeing things like this makes me so happy, this is humanity at its finest. The son literally lifting himself up, his mother's love for him, the medical team achieving this incredible feat, the technology that makes it possible. It's so heartwarming to see them all!

    • It honestly disgusts me. She says she'd been trying to get him help for almost 30 years, but the video says they couldn't afford it. What's the point of the medical technology if it isn't being used to help people? Imagine how much more comfortable he'd be now if he'd been able to access intervention decades ago.

    • @@lerualnaej5917 I agree, economic inequality causes most oft the suffering in the world and it's the biggest injustice of all. The most important thing anyone can do to improve the life of another person is to fight to abolishing exploitation and achieving equality. For me seeing this treatment process and everyone involved in it is still a reason for optimism. Most of the cruelty people inflict on each other comes from them being unable to see each other and their part in causing it. It's easy to disregard the suffering of a poor person the next town over or in Africa if we don't see how our actions cause this poverty. But when people meet face to face they are capable of great kindness and great feats, like that mother for her son, or the surgeon and the team who achieved this. I think if people are capable of this at a personal level it's also possible to make people see that they can also do this for people who they don't ever meet personally.

I can hardly move my head, I can't look up or side to side but I can look down. I take an injection every month to suppress the immune system to slow down the progression of the Ankylosing Spondylitis. I hope this man is doing well, it would have changed his life so much.
