First Wash in 42 Years! Ford F-250 Only 139 Original Miles. Barn Find. Insane Story
This is a 1978 Ford F-250 Lariat edition that is receiving its first wash in 42 years after sitting in a barn in North Carolina. This Ford truck has 139 original and has been lost on a farm for 42 years after 1 quick drive in later 1978. By disaster detail standards, this is brand new. Untouched. The owner drove it once to drive his daughter to work in the snow...then put it back in the barn. The F-250 is the lowest miles Ford Pickup Truck in the world. I performed a "preservation detail" to keep the condition authentic to the day it was picked up from the dealership. After a proper car wash and light polish, I added AMMO Skin paint sealant instead of a paint coating (AMMO Reflex Pro) to allow the new owner flexibility in how they choose to protect the paint in the future. Series like these spark a lot of imagination over here in my little European farmhouse. I was always drawn to the US car culture and the vastness of the country. And this episode just hits the mark, because one day I will take a plane, rent a car and drive around the great country looking for something to buy and bring home.
You shouldn't wash a barn find they're worth more with the original dirt on them.
Can we take a moment to give props to the old man who didn't just keep it in a barn until it flat fell apart into a pile of crap...... Kudos to him for getting this thing into good hands and saved when it needed it, and taking proper care of it while he had it.

I worked in Ford parts departments from 1978-1986. The "D9TA" prefix on the muffler part number designates it as a 1979 part. It's quite possible that some change occurred (during the 1978 truck production) to the muffler's design, materials or location of manufacture that required a new part number. Also, I may be wrong on this, but the 1978 and 1979 models had basically the single opening grille but rectangular headlamps came on the 1979 model. Not sure about that. If the truck was built in March then it was probably pretty close to one of the last 1978 models built before producing 1979 models. I remember selling many parts for Ford pickups and this one really takes me back to those days. It's so cool to see one preserved in original form!
They must have been switching over in 78 to the 79 front end. I'm almost sure that there were still split grills and round headlights still in 78. I didn't think the pull out gas cap door started in 78 though. Love that truck !

This actually was a little sad to watch for me. This is my dream car. I loved the way the Ford trucks looked back then, but what really hit me was when you had a question about the manufacturing process. My grandfather worked at the Detroit Ford plant for decades, he would have known but we just had his memorial service last month. Missed the chance to ask him about something as cool as this by a few months.

I worked for Ford between 1967-1997 in the Atlanta assembly plant. The 868 # probably was the line sequence #. Starting with 1 every day. Most likely on 2 ten hour shifts at the rate of 60-66 vehicles an hour. Meaning it was probably built half way through the second shift.

They didn’t find this truck in a barn . There’s no dry rot anywhere. The leather looks new and Even the tires are pristine. Not even the first crack from dry rot . Unless this truck was in a humidifier this is all bullshit

This reminds me of my Grandfather's truck. All though he was sky blue over dark blue. I got to drive it once many years ago. Unfortunately, a drunk driver rounded the corner and sideswiped all the vehicles parked. His had a camper on the back. It was shoved forward and through the cab. Thank you for saving these wonderful machines.

Absolutely! Judging by the website this truck is on and the prices of other vehicles, this truck is probably gonna fetch over $100,000. Bananas! This has to be one of the rarest barn finds I've ever seen. There's a Bronco on that site with 81,000 original miles on it and the sticker price is $119,000! How on earth does one let a brand new vehicle just sit like that? I can remember the first brand new vehicle I bought. I was so excited to have purchased it that I put 10,000 miles on it in 6 months taking road trip after road trip. I can see letting a Ferrari or Bugatti sit with little to no miles for appreciation but a '78 F250!?!? Why?! These trucks were made to be put to work.
I'm also thinking about how much Charlotte has changed since he bought that truck. Pretty amazing how well that truck stayed preserved after all of these years. What and amazing find, and she cleaned up really good! Keep up the great work!
North Iredell/Alexander area where this was purchased and is for sale still has some of its charm, although it’s changed a fair amount as well.

That truck is absolute platinum. You will NEVER find anything close to it again. The fact that it exists in the state it does, is beyond mind boggling. I would give anything to own it. My first truck was a '73 F250 Camper special with a manual transmission.
Such amazing detail. Awesome to see a brand new 1978 pickup in 2022. Wish there was commentary on the degradation in the engine compartment / hoses / lines / wiring, and the negative effects from old fluids.
well, I think we can assume just about anything rubber in contact with a corrosive like with brake fluid will need at least thorough cleaning, and likely new brake lines to be road legal (the old brake fluid often turns a dusgusting powder). Radiatir, block and heads will have to ge checked for corrosion in the galleries, and likely the crap rubber on the sparkplug leads would have cracked. Every old 1960s-1970's car I restored or wrenched on (Rover, Jag, Rolls, some old Vauxhalls (not mine) Land Rovers, Patrols, Landcruisers) were like that. Mercedes were surprisingly good on rubber being inventors of synthetic rubber. I did break a 1950s Benz bakelite distributor cap and boy was replacing it painful. Massive hip pocket hemorrhage. I used to my sons' and friends low cost mechanic, my fees were sixpack of decent local beer per 2 hours or less, 2 hours+ a 6pack an hour, parts their expense or paid off ober a year. Kept all the kids' and their mates in safe, fully dependable, operable cars, I was fastidious about brakes (being a veteran of radial tyres and driving too damn fast). The ones I restored were sold on for sending the youngsters through school, extracurricular activities etc. I generally didn't do bodywork, I had a mate with a full chassis jig in his body shop who'd do it for free for me doing his customers' mechanical work. Squeazy, oily and greasy, but much less pain to hip pocket.
Amazing job! I can't believe this truck was out there! That's incredible! I rebuilt my dad's 1977 F-150 XLT from the frame up 25 years ago and this brought back a lot of memories. I sold it to buy my first house when my daughter was born in 2003.

The nickname for this paint scheme back then was "root beer float". We are disassembling a 1978 Jeep J10 with this same paint scheme. This is an absolutely remarkable specimen. Thanks for sharing.

I revisit the video often... I own a 77 and a 71.... This truck is by far the finest example of a dentside Ford in existence.
My 74 camper deluxe had the pull out rear bumper that came out about 4 feet to accommodate the big overhead campers and still have rear lights which we're built into it. It was also perfect hauling lumber up to 16' long. Ah the good ole days.
Wish I could get my hands on something like that, it’s truly incredible to see anything over 20 years old with less than 200 miles

That is absolutely incredible! It's just hard to believe someone would let a truck sit like that, but I'm glad he did because now it's a museum piece. I remember back in the '70's, people bought trucks (myself included) for work. Most of them were worked pretty hard, and didn't last very long either. Back then, the quality wasn't all that great and they needed constant repairs and maintenance. My '74 F-100 was no different. You would buy a vehicle new, then take it back a time or two, to sort out all the issues, that was just normal at the time. Then it was just constantly fixing things that broke and leaked, it's just how it was at the time and we really didn't think much about it.
I bought my 79 f100 ford back in 2015, 49,000 original miles, just sitting in this guys driveway for 700$, tuned it up and did the brakes and a new gas tank for 900$ me and my grandpa got it running, when we got it it didn’t even roll, left it parked with e brake on, put 30k miles on it and it now has 80k miles, absolutely zero mechanical issues aside from electric choke and a shift linkage, not bad for a 41 year old truck and a 16 year old driving and fishing out of it for 4 years

Cosmetically and historically this is a gem. However it'd be a mechanical and financial nightmare, dried up deteriorated gaskets and seals from everything to the engine...brake system... steering... Transmission. Not to mention a corroded gas tank in need of replacement because it never had newer fluid flushed through it in over 50 years just like oil in the engine. Everything that was near the floor like brake system and suspension would also be rusted and permanently seized together because it was never moved, and it sat there for 50 years absorbing moisture from the floor. There's a reason the creators of this vid don't show this truck running or them attempting to run it, because it couldn't without thousands of $$$$$ thrown at it. You'd be better off to buy a truck in these years which has alot more miles and has been maintained and stored, than something cosmetically preserved like this and mechanically neglected due to a previous owner who was scared to drive his new truck from a 1/2 century earlier. This is fact, because I know a local car collector who thought buying a 1950s Cadillac with extremely low miles like this would be the ultimate barn find. What he did find was more mechanical problems than all the previous classic cars he ever bought combined. Yet the dumbest part is that these mechanical problems from vehicles not being moved usually involved obsolete not commonly replaced parts that never were available on a wide market even throughout the vehicles heyday, because vehicle parts are supplied by demand, and demand is created by all the consumers with problems because they drive their vehicles.

I have a 76 F250 4x4 from a man who had it 40 years. All original I worked at Ford dealerships in the 70s, 80s. Love those 70s the best.

This is the mix or two perfect worlds for me. I’ve been in love with these ‘73-‘79 ford trucks my whole life, I’ve owned several and now I even own a ‘78 that I bought from the original owners with 80,000 miles. Also, I love detailing and have been watching your videos for years, so this video is heaven for me. I would’ve loved to just be there to see this in person. These guys restoring these trucks have my dream job.

I'm 62 and I would give both balls to own this truck.
I have a sweet spot for old Fords with that color scheme. My daddy owns one. He’s had it for decades. Many more miles than this one, but many more memories as well. I hope one of us gets to inherit it some day. It would be an honor to hopefully keep it as well as this one was.
It’s in beautiful condition. It’s a shame no one is gonna drive this thing any time soon. It deserves to be driven.

Always takes me down memory lane to see those old Fords. My first vehicle I bought with my own money was a 1977 F250. Drove it for 22 yrs. Wish I still had it today...Great job on that detail!

But it still had a Duraspark II ignition system in 78, so the ignition control was 100% electronic ignition.
I love this video. It brings allot of nostalgia for me. This was my grand father's truck but in the green paint. It was given to my dad then to my brother. I learned to drive for the 1st time in this truck. Ours is still running using an insane amount of gas even with two tanks. The speedometer flipped I don't know how many times. 😄
The wax pen marks were various inspection stations. Those would correspond to a specific person on different shifts at different stations.
Or markings from a junk yard for those parts. it could have been damaged at some point
OMG I thought I'd never see one of these again!!! When I was 18-19 (a million years ago) I dated a guy who bought this exact truck but it was lifted with gigantic tires on it. I legit could not get in it without being picked up or using a ladder. Because of the color combo I named the truck Big Odie (Odie the dog in the Garfield cartoon). This truck zapped me right back to 1983-84.

This (along with some of the other barn finds) really make me question how people could buy a brand new truck and then park it for decades right after. It just baffles me that people had enough disposable income to buy a new vehicle and then not use it.

He really wasn't a truck guy....today all the kids want to be macho and drive a 4x4 pickup. Trucks were considerably cheaper back in the day, not like today's ridiculous prices, and not everyone wanted to have a pickup for a daily driver

Larry this was an outstanding video! I owned a 79 Ford truck like this that I bought back in 88 from the original owner with 40K miles! It was the same color two tone like this one but the colors were inverted. It was mostly the dark brown, hood, roof etc but the tan in the side panels between the chrome! It was in amazing condition when I bought it and I drove it to work for 20 years until I bought a brand new truck! Strangely enough even after driving it 20 years it still looked great when I sold it. This video sure brought back good memories of a very cool truck!

I am truly amazed that this truck didn't have rat nests inside and seats all chewed up. Also that the tires weren't completely dry rotted. Beautiful time capsule of a truck - love it!
Those tires would likely wear extremely fast though, even if they're not dry rotted, old tires tend to degrade quickly once put to use.

As a 16/17 year old my father ordered a 1978 F150, 351 4 spd , exact color minus the brown. For Christmas I bought him white wagon wheel rims which made the truck pop. This video was tremendous and brought brought back so many fond memories. Just wow! Thanks.

That truck is absolutely beautiful, it’s in amazing condition and the leather inside hasn’t cracked at all either My grandpa had one of these too but his was like a turquoise blue and he used the hell out of it, it was still in really good condition other than a bit of rust on the edges of the wheel wells but nothing serious
It’s vinyl and cloth. They weren’t putting leather into trucks till the mid to late 90’s. The vinyl on the doors are actually molded to look like it has stitching for a ‘luxury’ touch.
This one was particularly special Larry. Just everything about it.
I'm a 70 year old Ford guy and this blessed me so much. Unbelievable! This is by far the coolest detail I have ever seen on the rarest vehicle find I have ever seen. Hope it goes to a museum for Ford fans (and others who appreciate old stuff) to admire for life of our planet. Fantastic drtailing sir!!!

Amazing and since I still own a 1997 f350 dually diesel with 189,000 miles I can really appreciate the look of this truck. Beautiful restoration! Take it any day over the noise makers of today.
The '66 Galaxie 500 hubcaps look pretty good on the '78. The bench seats in the 73-79 Lariats were unbelievably comfortable and durable, as were the trucks as well. Shame on me for selling my factory special order 1974.

sometimes the plain water power wash itself gives us a clear hint of how good the final restoration is going to be ... foam spray & further detailing is an obvious icing over the cake . Such a pristine machine coming at hands for care after sitting for 40+ years is no less than a miracle. Another awesome vid Larry ... loved it 👍
My dad had a 78 ford truck that I can remember bouncing on the seat every time we hit a bump when I was very little. I know he wishes he still had it. It was a beast!!
