New Rockstars’ Fantastic Four Rewatch series continues with the 2007 sequel, Rise of the Silver Surfer, the film that infamously depicted Galactus as a cloud in space. BUT, one specific shot in the film reveals that they ALMOST got the character correct! Starring Chris Evans, Jessica Alba, Ioan Gruffudd, Michael Chiklis, and Kerry Washington, with Doug Jones playing the Silver Surfer (voiced by Laurence Fishburne), the movie was considered an improvement on its predecessor but ends with a more disappointing climax. Erik Voss explains this film’s successes, shortcomings, and ultimate legacy as Marvel plans to adapt the Fantastic Four in the MCU in 2025!

MCU, I know you're in tough times, but please give us a faithful Galactus! A reluctant devourer, beyond good and evil, and not a space cloud!
It’s not even taking place in the mcu
@@Mjsports3730 Explain??
What about silver surfer? 🤨
Arishem the Judge
It's taking placing in alternate 1960 retro futuristic universe in MCU multiverse relieving it of baggage of explaining why no one in 199999 remembers F4
Jello body shots are definitely a thing. You take them out of whatever container they came in.
That fact that he didn't know that shows he did have a wild early 20s lol.
yea that was strange
@@kingjustin1993Yeah, he definitely gives off “sheltered San Francisco leftie who never gets invited to parties” vibes
Look at him. He clearly has never got to experience it
This movie is a time capsule of 00s movie tropes. 😂
I blame Avi Arad
@@Zombiesnyder13😂😂😂
Like what?
Everyone : "Hateful little things." (Referring to 00s movie tropes) Me : "I love em."
I love these movies. I don't care what anyone else says about them. The cast had a great chemistry.
Yes! I love the relationship between human torch and the thing!
Even the video game was good
Omg the videos games on the og xbox went harrrddddd@@nebriancoleman4704
the cast was great. even doctor doom
I agree!!
Took me years to realize you can see the fiery silhouette of Galactus’ in the final fight 35:11
Yep. You sure can. Gotta look real close though
I still can't get over the fact that this film foreshadows space cloud Parallax in Green Lantern
Wtf are u on about
@@kriskimber3366 this film was released in 2007 , Green Lantern was in 2011 both had Space cloud villains who look nothing like comics
@@SirsasthNigam. one is marvel and the other dc lmao they arent setting each other up. lmao 2 completely different properties that have nothing to do with each other. literally foreshadowing nothing lol
@@kevinmanginelli6932you’re logic is so flawed, it’s impossible you don’t see it. At least that person’s logic makes sense since movie studios copy each other all the time. Not liking the word choice doesn’t mean the logic is flawed. Both representations have other similarities as well.
@@bbsy1 you cant use the word foreshadow if the properties weren't connected in any way😂nice try tho.
In the first film Reed was able to recreate the cosmic storm that gave them their powers. Maybe he’s been using it on different outfits so the FF isn’t stuck with just one suit adapted to each set of powers
32:17 I wasn't ready for that random F-Bomb 😂
18:19
It is not random it is very much well timed
Brought up 9/11 wants to disrespect Muslims
@@psychoj265 wait i was surprised too. is this a callback or something
@@SirsasthNigam. what was that one beeped out but the second one wasnt?
These movies were huge in my childhood
I admit, Silver Surfer in this movie is so comic accurate
Admit that you don’t know anything about the Silver Surfer. The only thing this movie got accurate about the Surfer is his appearance. In the comics, Silver Surfer doesn’t get his power from the his board and he can control it telepathically. A big change from the comics.
@@FRCB he was just saying his appearance is comic accurate
@@FRCB Well, wait, the argument could be that in terms of visual and tone, Story nailed it. You both could be right. I'm a Lee/Kirby/Buscema SS fan and I think that's what Story was looking at. Let's save the fights for Story :)
@@gumbo6598Right.
Reed could have easily figured out the unstable molecules and produce clothes for the group, much like the comic where HE invented the molecules.
I love how you throw shade at Dodge for appearing on the fantasticar when all video you have a laptop on the screen pumping Lenovo.
This Dr. Doom costume was peak live-action design. I’m not sure if it could be topped.
withh modern tech maybe it would but aint sure
Also, Doug Jones additionally plays Abe Sapien in the older Hellboy films and Commander Saru in Star Trek Discovery. 👍
When the clock strikes . . . 🕶️🌜
I might never come back to this channel 16:34
I never thought I needed this. This movie is my childhood.
Yup, silver surfers live action design still looks mint 👌
Rip Andre Braugher :(
Doug Jones is fabulous actor, and fully deserved more.
And got more, from Hellboy 2, etc.
you seem to think kevin feige had a lot more pull on these movies than he actually did
Was so disappointed with Galactus in this film.
Me, too! But in retrospect: would you trust *these* filmmakers with him? I mean, Story combined two of the *very best* Lee/Kirby stories at the kindest review is "meh."
What about the super skrull nod with Johnny taking the powers from all 4?
I can’t believe that he didn’t highlight the visage of galactus in the cloud before silver surfer explodes. Or that the Johnny with all 4 powers is just like super skrull.
I didn't mind Galactus being a space cloud to begin with. Obviously the plan was to have him in his expected form for a future movie (or Silver Surfer spin-off) since he takes on a form that would be recognised and feared by the inhabitants of whatever planet is to be eaten.
Am i mixing up continuities with Galactus? 3:32 Isn't he also, like, eternally hungry, and can never quell his hunger? Is it duty, or depraved hunger?
i'm not crazy about the depiction of galactus but apart from that, i think it's a fun movie
Avi Arad ' Renowned Spiderman ruiner' - Mr Sunday Movies
Borderlands, Zelda, and Naruto are next
I hope Javier ɓardum as galactus
As it is written.
It breaks my heart with how oblivious Stan Lee was with how AVI ARAD had been tearing up his characters all these years
Avi was Exective producer for NWH and Producer for both Spiderverse films
@@SirsasthNigam. as executive producer, he's not much of a threat, because he's working at minimum capacity And Phil Lord and Chris Miller were the masterminds behind Spiderverse, not Arad
@SirsasthNigam. Yeah...Avi wasn't really involved that much as executive producer for those movies
"I refuse to put goofy fantasy campy super hero stuff in my goofy fantasy campy superhero film" Truly a *MARVEL* how this film was received
I’m surprised you didn’t mention Fantastic Four - The Wedding of Reed and Sue comic since it was considered a big event
Back in 07 this was as lighthearted it was a good break from the grimness of daredevil, punisher and the x-men at the time.
I think after almost getting a Helicopter crashing on your head, a lot of people will want to go home and recuperate rather than staying in the place they almost died at.
9:34 you said that the suits could only handle their powers because they were wearing them when they were exposed to the radiation and that Johnny's other logos would burn off but the fantastic 4 logo wasn't on their suit when they were in space and they are still there?
Yeah...he's not as smart as he thinks he is😂
23:41 biggest reach ever 😂
R.I.P. Andre
I had a feeling those were the same woods in the last stand. I was kinda waiting for someone on KZhead to make a small clip of Doom blasting Wolverine and hover over him saying "Not so tough now are you?"
reed is able to reproduce the storm ( in the first one to cure Ben), so I guess the best explanation for the clothes and patches on the uniforms don't burning is that he was able to put the type of fabric they used for the uniforms through the storm reproduction so they could make regular clothes and patches to adapt to them.
Not going to lie, as a "nerd" and not "jock" during this time period...it was SUPER awesome to hear Reid drop bombs on Captain Holt like this. Like, screw your sense of ego and superiority when you're literally asking for this mans' help.
I am guessing you never had that american youth experience of spring break, shots of a body has even made it to here in the UK!!
Is because of AVI ARAD that Sony's cinematic universes failed
Sony? This movie is from fox
@@navinanase He worked for both of them
WHY DO YOU KEEP ON SAYING ITS NOT PERFECT! THIS CAME IN 2007! Its by all means perfect.
Blablabla, Jessica Alba "naked" bad, cause we progressive now. Yet no mention for that when Chris Evans was naked while skiing, when he used his powers for the first time in the first movie. Hypocrisy at its finest.
The human torch silver surfer chase scene had me fangirling the first time I saw the movie
It's interesting how everytime Jessica alba has a scene of implied nudity it's an issue but it's never an issue when Chris Evans has a scene of implied nudity...that's an interesting concept of equality ya got there
Well he always gave I play for the other team vibes. Was shocked he said he was married.
@@rah7866 not gonna lie, I was shocked too.
When did being married in Hollywood matter.
It’s not genuine, just NR showing they are trying to say right things.
Or Chris Hemsworth in Thor Movies or Ryan Reynolds fighting naked.
The first PGG 13 was Red Dawn 1984.Howard the Duck was 1986. Now you know...
12:11 I love seeing characters have fun w/ their powers
My problem with this was not just what they did to Galactus but how they nerfed silver surfer. Making his powers come from his board was extremely stupid.
I really loved the design of Doom in this, even that cloaked take gives off Sith vibes.
As a recovering Alcoholic, I think what they meant by jello shots off. Someone's stomach is like in their belly button. That's a thing, I believe. Instead of the cup.
It makes sense for him to be a cloud, he has no physical form, he just looks like whatever you can perceive. A being that can destroy planets being seen as a cloud may be corny, but makes sense.
I would love Javier Bardem as Galactus that’s an amazing casting decision
I feel like they could still have celebrity cameos, but still have it be in the Marvel World, rather than our world. They could do a goofy joke where an actor who plays a dead character (RDJ for example) as a magazine cover saying something along the lines of "Robert Downey Jr. DENIES rumors he's Tony Stark!"
Wait. Captain Holt was in fantastic four 2?? Neat.
22:35 "If the bar ain't bending, you're just pretending."
Lawrence Fishbourne as the voice of Surfer was great
22:53 wtf lol, we still want stuff like this today
Guarantee it’s because they don’t have stuff like this in their movies anymore which is why they’re not as popular in the box office and culturally anymore, at least in part
These F4 movies werent bad themselves as movies, just as an adapatation they were pretty far off the mark. The movies themselves with no attachments are decently good
Avi Arad still made them as an excuse for him to sell toys That's why they went nowhere
@@Zombiesnyder13 That has nothing to do with the overall sale of the movie but alr,
It’s crazy how good the graphics were, when Johnny had all of their powers. Now why couldn’t they do that in Secret Invasion?? 😂😂
Anyone else feel like the whole power-swapping bit at the end was supposed to be an homage to the Super Skrull?
TIL Doug Jones was Silver Surfer. Idk how I never knew this. Doug Jones is iconic. Those examples as well as Hellboy AND the one and only, Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus.
22:12 - 22:37 ? ...
I actually loved this movie as a kid
11:47 the women in that shot were pretty impressed by that VFX as well 😬
You line the Jello shots up along a womans body and down them without using your hands
honorable mention the combination power john gets during final battle is similar on how super skrull do in MVC 3
I'm surprised he didn't mention that
Imagine using London in a movie and NOT using the EYE. Ah ah hah aha.
If it wasn't for AVI ARAD A 3rd movie would've been made
12:50 I WAS A DJ DURING THIS TIME, JELLO SHOTS WERE THE IN THING TO DO, YOU POUR THEM OUT ON ANYTHING AND SLURP THEM UP. THEY ARE POURED OUT OF A PLASTIC OR PAPER CUP.
Ice trays for Jell-O shot
So it's distasteful when the joke is Jessica Alba is stripped in a scene but you had nothing but jokes when it happened to Chris Hemsworth last year lmao hypocrites
Yeah its kinda disappointing they do this.. Like its done for humor and its okay if its only done to men? Its fine he doesn't find it funny but people do.
@@lucasromerova6150 very disappointing and inconsistent
Becoming a trend with this channel now, glad I’m not the only one noticing
Ben Grimm references Rainbow Bridge - possibly hinting at Thor.....?
25:00 37:56 I always find it interesting in films/ tv when ppl switch powers & we get to see them come up with creative/ unique ways to use each other's powers lol.
Fantastic 4 silver Surfer is one of my favorite movies. And it did less then part 1??? I didn't really care for part 1. Part 2 is my movie. And I didn't know it had a bad rotten tomato rating. Wow like I said I love rise of the Silver Surfer. 😊
Avi Arad and dance, that's what these movies had, and that's what we'll have in the next Venom movie
I love this movie because of the fun night I had seeing it with my friends, those were some great memories, sometimes that's all a movie experience needs to be. ❤
I did not remember that Andre Braugher was in this movie. Rest in peace Captain
Great Reed speech, and I can't wait to hear Flame On again I don't know why, but it's so fn cool
I'm still hoping they pull Ioan Gruffudd back for a multiverse version of Reed Richards
9:14 31:44 I find it funny when ppl point out/ mock the product placement in films like this bcos I honestly never noticed it before lol
when he said you didnt have to tell me boom boom lol
After going through the X-Men and Fantastic 4 movies, I wonder if they'll make a video about the planned Civil War movie with the Marvel Fox properties
One thing stood out upon reflection. Reed pointed out that the planets that the silver surfer visited were all now lifeless. They were NOW lifeless. That implies that they were not only life bearing worlds but that Reed KNEW that they were life bearing worlds. At this point in Marvel movies, that would have been a much bigger deal.
17:15 Mall Rats reference
By the end, I was like... "Boy. That escalated quickly"
@NEWROCKSTARS where did u get that circuit city picture?? It looks like the one in my area, in Massachusetts 8:46
14:37 holy hairline my brother.
Keep up the good work
Killian Murphy would be a great casting for Dr doom
Idc I loved these 2 movies as a kid and I had the thing fists lol
Silver surfer was dope
Does The Fantastic 4 logo that was originally introduced for the upcoming MCU movie give a hint to incursions? The "4" has running parallel lines similar to the ones racing through the streets in the incursion universe from Multiverse or Madness.
@35:11 you can see the outline of Galactus along with the helmet antlers.
Did you say the F word uncensored at 32:18 ?
If not an easter egg, then fascinating: 20:55 paraphrased is also what Jesus says to Judas right before Judas is revealed to be his betrayer (John 13:27). Not sure if it was intentional, but Silver Surfer saying this to Galactus is fitting while knowing he would also have to do something he doesn't want to do to fulfill the mission at hand.
Still annoyed that Ben's voice became all gravelly (pun intended) when he becomes the Thing, BUuuT Johnny gets to keep his same voice when HE (temporarily) swaps with Ben and has the Thing powers. to clarify, It's just the continuity of the same power, but keeping the 'hot guys' voice, that bugs me.
HELL YEAH TY FOR THE VIDEO
There is nothing wrong with American flags btw.
Yah...its just america...the country
For me, Galactus was the only thing I didn't like about the film. The rest of it was fine. The Silver Surfer looked and the voice was great.
My favorite part in this movie was when they were all watching the footage of the silver surfer blast Doctor Doom and Ben leans over to doom and says "I like the part where he knocks you on your ass" 😂
8:18 bruh flushed away poster, starring Hugh Jackman and Ian McKellen 😏
