From the small Spanish city of Eibar which is home to a competitive La Liga team, to the tiny independent city-state of Monaco which is home to one of the top teams in Ligue 1, HITC Sevens takes a look at a number of cities which punch above their weight and overachieve within the world of football / soccer in relation to their size.

    • @Daz Ediss Not really, untill the 90's the other basque teams also played with mostly basque players. And back then the teams could retain a player even if he wanted to leave the team. For the last 30 years it has been harder for athletic, but they still are much stronger economically than Real Sociedad or Osasuna, so they bought every young talent emerging from these teams

      @mortrex68@mortrex684 жыл бұрын
    • For example Javi Martinez, Llorente, Muniain, Raul Garcia and Williams grew up in Navarre, wich is the province Osasuna is from. Others like Aduriz and Dani Garcia are from Gipuzkoa, the province of Real Sociedad. They buy these players when they are young because they have the money to do so.

AJ Auxerre: despite coming from a city with a population of around 35000, AJ Auxerre have won Ligue 1 once, the Coupe de France 4 times and made a QF appearance in the CL. FC Sochaux: Montbéliard, the city where FC Sochaux is based have a population of around 25000, but despite that Sochaux have played a total of 66 seasons in the Ligue 1 and won the Ligue 1 twice, the Coupe de France twice and the Coupe de la Ligue once. En Avant Guingamp: Based in a town with only 7000 inhabitants, Guingamp have played serveral seasons in the top-flight, won the Coupe de France twice, and made 5 appearances in Europe. KFC Uerdingen 05 : Based in a small city (around 20000 inhabitants) near Krefeld, KFC Uerdingen have played a total of 14 seasons in the Bundesliga, and the club have won 1 DFB-Pokal in 1985. CD Numancia: The club had played the majority of their existence in the third or fourth tier prior to their first promotion to La Liga in 1999. Since then the club have spent a total of 4 seasons in the Spain's top flight, despite being based in a city, with less than 40000 inhabitants(Soria).

    • Hi Luuk, you're very welcome. Just in case you were wondering why any of your suggestions didn't feature: Lens: Isn't a city, it's a town/commune, so couldn't feature. Auxerre: Seven is based *solely* on the here and now, not historical achievements, and AJ Auxerre are currently in Ligue 2. Sochaux: Also currently in Ligue 2. Guingamp: Not a city and in Ligue 2. Uerdingen: Currently down in the third tier, Uerdingen isn't a city, and the local city Krefeld has a population of 225,000. Numancia: Currently relegation-threatened in the Segunda Division.

  • The biggest club that comes from a relatively small city is SANTOS FC. Santos has a population of about 400 thousand people. That may seem like a lot for many european countries, but keep in mind that there are 17 cities with over a million inhabitants in Brazil. To put it in perspective, Santos is only the 10th largest city in Sao Paulo state and the 55th largest city in the country. Never the less, Santos FC has won 8 league titles, 1 Copa do Brasil (equivalent to the FA Cup), 3 Copa Libertadores and 2 club world cup titles. Not only that, but it has given the world Pelé, Robinho, Neymar and many, many other players. It's really impressive.

They were the champions of the Copa Sulamericana (the south american "Europa League") in 2016, and qualified to the Libertadores on the two following seasons. They competed in the Série A uninterrupted since 2014, beating great clubs such as Palmeiras 5×1 and Internacional 5×0. Unfortunately they were relegated last season, but it's still an impressive record. Great video, bro. Sorry for my bad English.

Second most achieving club (histrorically aswell as in the past few years) while they only have a poulation a aroind 200.000 thus being smaller than Rotterdam (Feyenoord), Utrecht (FC utrecht), Den Haag (ADO Den Haag) while overachieving then. 2. AZ Alkmaar. Alkmaar is the 28 largest city in the Netherlands (around 100.000 people) while having the 4th most achieving team in history, arguably even surpassing feyenoord in the last years. Last season they got to second place and this season they tied to first place with Ajax before the season ended due to COVID19, beating Ajax 2 times, home and away.

  • Good job on the video, but I think it could0ve been better if you used examples from leagues outside of Europe. For example, in the Chilean Primera División there is a club named Cobresal, which is currently in the 11th place of the standings (only 7 games into the 2020 tournament). Cobresal was the 2015 Clausura Champions, and important players of the Chilean national team have played in the team, such as Iván Zamorano. The team is located in the city of El Salvador, which was designed in the 1970s to shelter the workers of the El Salvador mine. In the 80s the city had more than 15.000 inhabitants, and it had an airport with flights to and from Santiago, a commercial district, and many facilities for the miners. The stadium of Cobresal was rebuilt in the 1980s to allocate games of the Copa Libertadores, with a capacity of 20.000 fans. Now the city has around 8.500 inhabitants and the mine will close in the next decade. But the team still plays and trains in El Salvador. If El Salvador it is a city or not depends on your criteria, but at least it was a city. At least it could've make the video of successful town clubs. Other examples outside of Europe are Cerro Largo of Uruguay, JS Kabylie of Algeria, and especially Independiente del Valle of Ecuador (2016 Copa Libertadores finalists, 2019 Copa Sudamericana champions) It's not something bad per se that in this kind of videos you use only European examples, but I expect cases from other continents if you point out that you take a look at "cities within the World". Please take this comment as constructive criticism, I do enjoy your channel and I want to help to make it better

  • I think Alkmaar could have been featured as their team, AZ, was second in the Dutch league. Anderlecht, though from the Brussels area, is actually from the small city of Anderlecht, whilst historically dominating the Belgian league. Herning is home to Danish 1st placed FC Midjytland. For Germany, many cases could be made of course, but my personal choice would have gone out to Leverkusen as it has a similar size as Wolfsburg but the club has more historical relevance and is higher placed.

They are from a city of 20 000 and the clubs they compete agains in the bulgarian league are from either the capital 1.5 mil population or other cities with 3 to 500 000 populations . They have won the bulgarian title 10 years in a row , played in the champions league group stage 2 times almost every year in the europa league group stage , reached the last 16 in the in the Europa few times . And have beaten so many power clubs , PSG , Steua Bucharsti , Red Star Belgrade , Basel , Lazio , list goes on and on . Its really remarkable

They have won two league titles in their history, with the most recent one being in 2008/09. They've been a steady top-3 contender for the past 5 years. They've won the Dutch Cup four times, reaching the finals for the past two years and making the semi-finals the past 6 years. • Nantes is a city in France with a population of 300,000 (near enough), home to the third most successful team in french history (one title more successful than PSG), and who have partaken in the Champions League on multiple occasions, including a semi-final in 2000. After the turn of the millennium however, we had a financial problem or two (no relegation though), and we have never really recovered from it. Before the season was suspended, FC Nantes were positioned in 13th, 12pts behind European football. The normal pattern which we are yet to break is that up to and including Christmas, we are really strong contenders for UCL football, but then let it slip in the second half of the season. After leaving Leicester City, Claudio Ranieri became the FC Nantes boss for a year, and the most recent event, unfortunately, is the death of Emiliano Sala, who topped our scoring charts for each of the past three seasons (R.I.P.).
