How To Make The Metal Foundry . Steel Melting Furnace

How To Make The Metal Foundry . Steel Melting Furnace.
In this video, we show our longest-running steelmaking furnace project. The home foundry was made from an old gas cylinder. The furnace is designed for welding steel ingots and raises the melting point of steel. Unfortunately, the first start-up of the furnace was not entirely successful, namely the melting crucible burst. I think the subsequent swim trunks will be successful ... If you liked the video like it, do not forget to subscribe to the channel ... Thank you all for watching.
WARNING:
Foundries can reach temperatures in excess of 1,650ºC, which is well above the melting point of hobbyists. This project should only be attempted with adequate knowledge and training, proper protective safety gear, and in a fire resistant area with adequate ventilation. Use caution and common sense. Use of this video content is at your own risk.

    • For a tempature that high you may have to change crucible types like graphite would work much better for that, because it will get extremely hot also I love the design of it, really well done and even gave me an idea for a similar style, but I'll probably use a leaf blower motor because it's the same one that I've been using. Beautifully designed amd I look forward to seeing what you do with it

  • So a couple of features I've seen on other kilns is one, a drain hole out the bottom. The kiln is placed over a bed of sand, that way if the crucible fails while the metal is in a liquid state it drains out the bottom and can be collected from the sand. Otherwise you need to get it out of the bottom of your furnace. The other was the barrel that makes the body, if you had done another cut and made a bottom the same way you have a top, then the centre section can be lifted off and the crucible picked up without having to reach down into a hot kiln.

    • gotta coat it with itc ceramic. more heat efficiency and metal wont stick to it. if liquid metals gets into your refractory cement it will seep into all the pores. then it's scrapped.

    • No need for a drain hole but you can if you want, if metal spills in the furnace it can be chipped away after it cools down and the refractory can be patched. Making a removable center section is bad news, trust me you’d rather have to reach down in to a hot furnace with your tongs than to blast your legs with 2000 degree heat. I ran a foundry for 20 years so I have some experience with this stuff 😉

So man people never start because they think they need thousands of dollars worth of tools and equipment. This is proof you don’t. You just need some skill and imagination. • Awesome content brother, I love the crucible steel you have made in other videos. It's a shame the crucible fractured in this one. I wonder if it's because the heat is directed to one side of the crucible via the pipe. Your brick coal forge has even heat around the crucible. It will be interesting to see future videos to see if crucibles are able to take the heat with this tank version. Is there any chance you can supply a recipe for the crucibles you make? Or an instructional video. The crucibles I've been able to make hold out to about 1100-1200 Celsius and I know high carbon steel wants about 1400. I don't want to spend money on graphite crucibles that I have to destroy to remove the ingot any help would be appreciated. Thank you and I love your work.

  • I've used propane & air in my furnace for melting aluminum in a setup very similar to yours, although I controlled the air flow by blocking the blower inlet with a flat disc. I think you will need to use oxygen to melt iron or steel. I know the numbers make it seem possible for propane/air, but in practice I doubt very much you will be able to melt any ferrous metals without using oxygen, which is expensive...

    • @@ralphwaters8905 It's not the most efficient fuel for it, but propane is certainly up to the task of melting steel in a furnace. Ric Furrer has a video about making crucible steel with propane forges, just in case you're still skeptical.

      @Skinflaps_Meatslapper@Skinflaps_Meatslapper2 жыл бұрын
    • @@Skinflaps_Meatslapper Thanks for the suggestion. I went and had a look at Ric's channel but the only steel smelting I saw used charcoal in a cupola-style furnace, and they only made iron blooms; no liquid in a crucuble. I'm pretty sure MY little foundry furnace could not melt steel with propane & air. MAPP gas perhaps. Just my limited experience. I'm not saying it can't be done, but I have yet to see it. If you have a video link, please share the wisdom.
