  • Consciousness is fundamental. Elon is on to something, the conscious experience is more than atoms being arranged in a particular pattern. We are definitely missing something huge at the moment because even neuroscience can not describe how a subjective conscious experience works. That being said, we all know and feel that consciousness exists outside of the physical world.

    • The phenomenon of emergence is the only explanation for human consciousness. Many things about life are emergent in nature. You can see the different things being combined to form the system or entity but you can't see what happened between the combination and the final outcome. Logic say 1+1 = 2 but complex systems are not logical. For complex systems especially biological systems 1-1 =>3 where did the 1+ come from resulting in a completely new system? I dont think science can ever explain this. It takes an intellectual leap of some sort to accept this as reality of nature without your necessarily having to understand it.

    • I just commented: "About consciousness, Elon Musk said it twice: "I suspect, there is more to it than atoms bump into atoms." Nope, nothing more is needed: bumpily observing each other IS impacting each other - reciprocally, mutuality! And that is what con-sciousness literally means: 1. con=each other, together and 2. scio=knowing. It is something even more fundamental, even more than, say, "c a r n a l knowledge" ¹, nuclear ² knowledge, the most fundamental, primal coitus... coitus a prori! ¹ and who knows, cosmically more enjoyably fun. ² Nuclear particle knowledge... Consider this: Does"particle" mean "being APART FROM", or rather, does it mean "BEING A PART OF"?! I go for the latter...

    • @@Galantry3828 Of course it does. You start to understand that everything has consciousness and everything is connected to everything else. It's just our human ignorance that makes us think that we're special. But deep in yourself you start to discover that we're not much different from trees and everything else. It's just that we humans lack scarcity for the first time in the history of life as we know it and thus we feel lost and lack meaning and think of ourselves as separate, individual creatures. Think about it: An organism that is constantly thirsty / starving whatever, it'll not waste an ounce of energy more than needed to "think about itself". It'll try to get water and food to survive. The idea of a self is really just to self preserve in the situation of life threat. It's just a pity that we humans express this kind of pattern almost 95% of our life times which is why we have so much misery in the world. The interesting question I think is though why I'm born into this human flesh soup in the first place and what additionally what happens after "death". But ultimately I think everything is much, much more connected and it's our conditioning and ignorance that makes us believe in the first place we're special. I think as long as we hold on to that idea, we won't have a very long time on this earth. Just look around what's happening.

    • Universe is entangled system of all particles but once quantum systems become larger and larger, complex, there is illusion of seperation. Conciousness is formless, constant change, encrypted form of quantum system that communicates with other quantum systems, so there is some kind of quantum cryptography, so If you go this way, You could conclude similar pattern to blockchain. Body and Mind seems like vessel for conciousness. The Observer and Interpreter of information transmission that communicates on metaphysical level. Every Observer is sender and receiver, aka. Quantum Entaglement. Thoughts are produced by quantum system, so thoughts are quantum systems, conciousness is self-producing quantum systems which we call concious experience, an event, it's like a frame in the movie which every conciousness are creating. Conciousness is producing conciousness kind of like quantum computer can create quantum systems. Why wouldn't there be biological' quantum computer. Computer is just tool for fast computation and computer can't do many things as human do even though it was designed based on brain, nervous system, even deep learning can't, so there is something missing, link between what human can do and electricity of the brain. There is messurement which we call observation, then there is calculation, error-feedback loop and action. Let's simplify what we know to "Everything is information", so How lack of information, nothingness transformed into single particle, single bit of information? Btw. In this scenerio Everything is possible, even something like Universe taking physical body in another dimension and everything is this being creation, higher inteligence creating lower level of inteligence which culture named it alliens or God. How buddism came up with idea of ascending to higher dimensions. Illusion of seperation between Conciousness and the Higher dimensions of conciousness - which people call Matrix? It seems like there is one dimension of conciousness, fundamental level. We can go on and on, conciousness, spirituality, the universe, quantum physics are fascinating. If you could add evolutionary biology, deep learning, game theory, It would end up fascinating conversation.

Every system no matter of complexity has feature of homeostasis, messurement and messurements take diverse forms. Every system design can produce population of that system. Larger and complex it gets it's better. Births and deaths of systems are happening all the time and all that released energy is causing new annomalities, Whenever this creation evolves, all matter evolves too, because less complex systems must addapt either reproduce, become immortal or die. Systems reproduce and live in order to collect informations. Interpretation and action are also messurements of many systems working together causing this or that effect. Infinite dimension error-feedback loop of self evolving information.

    • this is the problem with naive empiricism. taking your atheistic materialistic worldview to its logical conclusion would mean the mind would be reduced to the physical brain and all thoughts in the brain would be determined by the laws of physics and chemistry, thus eliminating freedom of thought. But freedom of thought and the ability to freely weigh evidence are requirements for reaching justified knowledge claims. simulation theory would be the same, the self would be illusory and everything would be determined by computer code. both present a self defeating worldview. there is no solution to this besides the Trinity creating us with freedom of thought and there are very good reasons why God must be a trinity but too much to go over in a KZhead comment.

This way we can assign a percentage to measure consciousness from one species to the next and so on. Imagine an interface of a Mac and a Pc with similar programming to be each other’s redundant function, single tasking in harmony while trying to harmonize their Interacting with others like themselves, see themselves as being conscious of each other, evolving.

The only thing on this planet that claims to have an explanation of that realm is religion. Maybe it’s right here in front of us, which is why it feels so big and obvious but we’re not understanding it. Not every religion is true but the preserved text might just have an answer. • My thoughts on a few things: ❕Intelligence, I would define as the ability to learn, understand, teach and apply knowledge. This can be measured in various already established, documented ways. And we can apply this to ourselves, other species and any future AI. Currently, it is a safe assumption that some AI out there are relatively intelligent, but considering the 'training' and 'programming' required, my credit will still go to the humans behind the project and not the AI itself. ❕Consciousness, I would define this as a sense of awareness of yourself and your surroundings and your place in something larger. This is difficult to measure I think at the moment at least. Tests can be performed (Schneider 2019, Turing 1950), but application of this is very difficult I think to AI at the moment. I personally do not think AI will have consciousness anytime soon. ❕Soul, I would define this as an abstract essence of being, outside your physical self. To measure this in AI or machines at the moment is probably not possible. I haven't done enough research on this, but this would be the absolute most difficult task. How do you even approach this? ❕Thought, I would define as a mental process of modeling and dealing with the world around them. We can measure this with rabbits, rats, humans, and AI as well. Cause and effect of actions, the entities response pre and post result, etc. Basically, we can measure a lot of things, but consciousness and soul are two things at the moment I would say are a fail for AI. Will that change in the future? My guess is no. I think we will all be having this same debate in 100 years, the same way the debate on time travel has been going on and on forever. Everyone likes to forget the solidity of the logic in the Grandfather paradox. Scientific principles lead people to create some crazy theories, but how time works in a universal sense is not implying that you can travel across it. That is and will always be impossible IMO.

Does matter only exist in the local state by which we experience it and is underlying causality not inevitable and essential to it considering the incompleteness of mathematical truth applicable to our universe (or one operating by its same causal principles). Thus matter could be, and likely is, a creative burst of something ongoing ... Particles could be thought of less as individual objects and more so states, or excitations, of fields that may even reach beyond the spectrum of causality we are accustomed to. Those ideas are never more than thoughts, so the notion that we can somehow understand what consciousness is through mater, is quite absurd. We are to live in the spiritual world forever where we are to breath the love of God this is the ideal but it is not the case because of the bad position man is in. We have two brains a physical brain and we have a spiritual brain, the physical brain controls the movement of our bodies and the spiritual brain is what we use to think with etc and that is also connected to our spiritual body. My old man had a heart attack in the Ambulance he found himself floating above his body and watching the medics working on him. My old man driving a train underground at his coal mine, saw a couple of miners walking along the rail by the time he got to that point they weren't there a couple of miners died there earlier, he came home white as a ghost. I have had my own experience with the afterlife. I mean there is plenty of evidence out there the UAP's that the military is seeing they are entities from the spiritual world. We believe in love right but you can't see it can you so how do you know that is love, I could say prove it wheres the evidence. There is plenty of testimonies of the spiritual world but whether they are true or not that is up to you, I can't force that belief I just gave an answer that to me is true. You know a caterpillar spends it life munching on leaves to its heart content in the world not realizing that one day it will be a beautiful butterfly and the ability to go wherever it wants. We are no different, the fetus in the womb is living a life of luxury for 9 months does't have to do a darn thing its all taking care of, no need to cook, plenty of warmth and just a lovely place to be. At birth out of nowhere its life is turned upside down, cold, noisy and now hungry. The same thing happens when we die many people cannot believe they have died, they cannot grasp the fact they are in the spiritual world, they cannot grasp they are in a place they created themselves by how they have lived on earth. So dying for a lot of folk is a dreadful thought, for me no because I know there is an afterlife, the same way I am in love with my wife I can't see it but what I am feeling I believe is love.

  • From an evolutionary perspective, it would be beneficiary for an organism to have a sense of self. In order to distinguish its self from its surrounding and other animals and protect its existence. So with an evolving brain that has more and more capabilities, the understanding of self transposes from simple feelings to a relatively precise description. Also in order to simulate reality you need the capability of a thought observing another thought, to verify its correctness and adjust. So self reflection and consciousness could be just and evolutionary trait of an advanced neural network that needs to protect its existence...

    • That's funny, LSD gave me a similar experience that I drew the opposite conclusion from. When I started to feel detached from my ego, separated from myself, able to look at my thoughts and feelings as if from outside, it seemed like the ideas of "soul" and "consciousness" are just shallow coping mechanisms my body (and my brain is part of my body) uses to process and understand the impulses and experiences I'm constantly assaulted with. I've never been more sure that consciousness and thought are nothing more than atoms bumping into each other. But I also think it's extremely narcissistic for humans to think our brains are capable of understanding reality at all. The analogy I use is a colony of ants building an anthill in the middle of a construction site full of signs explaining that it's about to be turned into a Walmart. There is literally nothing I could do to make those ants understand why it's self-destructive to build the anthill there, because they are not beings capable of comprehending the reality of the situation as well as I can. But ants and I are both just creatures created by the process of evolution, which gave us the intelligence and skills necessary to survive and perpetuate our species. Just because I'm orders of magnitude smarter than the ants, why should that make me believe it would be any more possible to explain to me what's really going on with the universe than it would to explain to the ants how that big yellow digger is going to destroy their hill tomorrow morning?

    • this I the problem with naive empiricism. taking your atheistic materialistic worldview to its logical conclusion would mean the mind would be reduced to the physical brain and all thoughts in the brain would be determined by the laws of physics and chemistry, thus eliminating freedom of thought. But freedom of thought and the ability to freely weigh evidence are requirements for reaching justified knowledge claims. it's a self defeating worldview. there is no solution to this besides the Trinity creating us with freedom of thought and there are very good reasons why God must be a trinity but too much to go over in a KZhead comment.

    @rmarlin@rmarlin5 ай бұрын
  • Our brain computes multiple different sensory inputs (eyes etc.), combines it with previous memories of experiences and saves the new ones, all of this is happening in parallel configuration and is incredibly complex operation running "on the background". Our consciousness is sort of user friendly "top layer" representation of that parallel machine's workings and it feels "serial" to us. It probably developed because it was a survival advantage to be able to predict behavior of your group mates so you had to put yourself into their heads to predict whether they are angry or happy etc. The ones who could navigate better in their social group had better chance of not getting killed and to spread their genes. "Next generation" (meaning many generations later) of these better predicting "humans" were thus even harder to predict, because they themselves could predict people around them and could plot all sorts of potentially malign behavior so consciousness grew more and more complex to accommodate for those intricacies in a feedback loop manner making us capable of not only considering other's intentions, but also putting ourselves into that equation, because if you consider what others think that are your intentions, it might help to predict what they will try to do about it. For example if I know I stole someone's food and I know they know and they are coming towards me looking angry with a stone in their hand, it might be better not to try to hug them, but either run or fight. This should then make you technically "self aware".

    @christinet638@christinet6386 ай бұрын
    • No. I actually think it’s the other way around. You can control your hormones by manipulating your own thoughts and emotions. Actually, if you work on letting go of all your emotions and thoughts you will see you ego fall apart. At the end of that you might even have strange spiritual abilities show up that seem supernatural or non physical.

Intelligence won’t be to hard. What we are, the great all, however can probably not be grasped by “intelligence”. We are it when stripped down to our bare essence. It’s beyond anything because it is everything. Something like that 😅 Ancient spiritual traditions and their “scientific” branches are our best bet apart from just knowing who we are beyond the person. I think 😉

  • Of course life and consciousness is not just atoms bumping into atoms. There are boundary conditions, emergent properties, context dependent constraints, meaning and negentropy. Metabolism is the transformation of meaning into physical dynamics… so living systems are activated by gestalt perception, and gestalts are necessarily irreducible to their constituent parts… Michael Polanyi wrote about that in the 60s… it’s the basis of biological complexity. For more interesting thoughts on this stuff check out Alicia Juarrero, Terrance Deacon, Evan Thompson, people like that are thinking about thinking in ways that make this conversation appear very rudimentary.
