I live in Florida, USA and have a co-worker with a cockney accent. She told me that a lot of people here somehow mistake it for an Australian accent. I have to admit hearing a cockney accent in person is an odd experience for me. It's a pretty 'extreme' accent to my American ears and you only hear it in television and movies over here, making it seem almost fictional.
I imagine it’s the same experience as us hearing that deeeeeep southern American accent
I went to America with my brother a few years ago and literally everyone asked me what part of Australia I was from! It got on my wick after awhile! I was born in Whitechapel, London! Well within the sound of the bells. I am a Cockney!
@@victorian-dad LOL apparently I'm the only American who knows about the sound of the bells thing. I guess there aren't many people watching BBC America over here. This is hilariously brill. As a Northern Irishman, I lived in London for 27 years and from day one I imitated the cockney accent for a laff, to be heard, to join in and in the end no one would believe me when I spoke in my usual northern Irish brogue. I fooled the fecking lot of them, makes me chortle even now 7 years after leaving.

David Edwards I understand you were mimicking the Republic, that's why I told you that in my OP. I said it came off as ignorant how you didn't know then attacked me.
David Edwards Dramatic? An "attack" can be a slight against someone's name or a full of barrage of abuse - It's just something negative against someone else. You must be one of those kids who thinks words have one meaning.
👍👏 fantastic and amazing. Thank you for this lesson.
This is a great example of the accent. I’m a cockney and have always lived in E London. Although people generally do not sound like that anymore unless they put it on and often make it a big part of their personality. A lot of similarities with the Australian accent, and we also share some of the slang too, like up the duff and missus. I guess it's because a lot of the first settlers - convicts - came from London. There used to be a lot of rhyming slang here too but these days many younger people won't understand an older person who uses rhyming slang. There is a much bigger American influence in the speech of younger people - eg. a lot of people under 25 will pronounce "r's" instead of the "schwa" sound. Saying "Better" as "beddr" instead of "bedda". On another note, my friend from China who came to Australia to study for a couple of years didn't know that the "l" in a word like "owl" or "little" was "supposed" to be pronounced at all - she thought it was just "ow" or "littuw" because that's how it's said by a lot of people. Incidentally I actually prounounce the "l" in words like that. My friend found it hard to understand lectures because she said a lot of people "merge the words together" (and in China people are generally taught from either an American or a British RP accent - in the same way that students of Chinese are taught from a standard Beijing accent but Mandarin accents and dialects vary quite significantly throughout the country - not including other Chinese "dialects" such as Cantonese or Wu, which I would actually classify as different languages to Mandarin even though people who speak those "dialects" write using the same Standard Chinese language) but she said she found it easier to understand me because I say "t's" and "s's" at the end of words but a lot of people apparently don't.

Amazing! 🤟😁❤️
It’s amazing how many of these are the same in Australian, we even have rhyming slang. For many years I thought Australian copied many things from cockney but it’s interesting if you look into the history of the Australian accent, many of the original convicts were poor cockneys. Over time the rhyming slang became unique to Australia, so it wasn’t copied it evolved from cockney. So to ‘take a look’ in original cockney was butchers hook, and down under it changed to captain cook. I think if Jason S or Michael Caine or Danny Dyer etc were to try the Australian accent they would probably nail it, and it’s not easy to do well
When I heard some actors talking cockney, I honestly thought it was australian XD
