Engineering Connections (Richard Hammond) - Formula 1 | Science Documentary | Reel Truth Science

Richard Hammond reveals the surprising engineering connections behind the Formula 1 car. The stars of the most glamorous, and expensive sport on earth wouldn't even cross the starting line without inspiration drawn from a revolutionary 19th-century cannon, ancient sailing boats, jet engine fan blades, body armour and a technique practised by blacksmiths for thousands of years.

    • However, there are good science and engineering textbooks that show you examples with real and practical situations, in fact when I have to take a new course I try to choose the option that most offers those characteristics, obviously they'll never be like one of these episodes in this kind of series, but it's a start. Then you can complement what you learn in the uni textbook with content like this or real life experiences.

  • Correction. When an internal combustion engine is cold, the pistons have a SMALLER diameter compared to a warmed engine. The risk isn’t a too tight piston, the risk is the piston may wobble in the cylinder and cause damage. Also a piston is “cam ground” meaning the part of the piston with more material “wrist pin” is smaller diameter than the other parts of the piston. This way when the engine is warmed, the piston is as close to a perfect circle as possible.

    @ericcindycrowder7482@ericcindycrowder74824 жыл бұрын
    • thats what you'd think, but in fact the video is correct, it just doesnt explain fully why. you are correct that materials expand when heated, but because the piston and the engine block are different materials, they have different thermal expansion properties. so when cold, the engine block could shrink *more* than the piston, meaning a too tight fit. the engine is designed to run at a certain running temperature, so its only at this temperature that the piston and block have a snug fit. Hope this explains this!

  • Summary: 1. High-efficiency engines are made from very high-precision mechanical engineering feats, creating pistons and cylinders that fit very tightly. This gives the car a whopping speed of 360 KPH only with a 2.4 engine! 2. Aerodynamics are the most important part of the car engineering. Increasing the car's weight by increasing the downward force on it around corners helps pinning it down. Else it would take off. This is achieved using the flaps of the car. On the other hand, flaps create a problem too: flaps increase the weight and slow the speeds on straight tracks. For this, flaps can be opened / closed from within the car by the driver. 3. For creating the fuel tank, they use Kevlar. Kevlar is a very strong material. It is at least 5 times stronger than steel. It is flexible and strong at the same time without being hard and stiff.. It is used in bulletproof vests too. Now, the tank can endure such strong forces and is pierceproof too. 4. Carbon fiber is used to create the body of the car. It is 3 times stronger than steel and very very very light-weight at the same time. It is really amazing too see a multi-million dollor piece of tech just flying around the race track.

    @lordbaronvonwalrusthethird3902@lordbaronvonwalrusthethird39025 жыл бұрын
    • Really 150bhp? My 2010 Mondeo produces 200bhp, and that’s well, like an average family car? Performance on the average car has gotten considerably higher over the past 10 years :)

      @dazmorland@dazmorland5 жыл бұрын
    • @@dazmorland Yes but your one case in point does not represent the average car. At 200 bhp your Mondeo will be towards the top end of the range, most Mondeo's sold will be the bottom and middle of the range which will be 120 - 160 bhp.

    • Dan Smith Dunno thought the Monds ranged from 140 - 300bhp for the 2.5 turbo?. Still 200bhp feels nothing special, decidedly average I’m afraid........

      @dazmorland@dazmorland5 жыл бұрын
    • @@dazmorland It appears they currently range from 113 - 237 bhp. Looks like they don't make the 2.5 anymore but that was a bit less powerful at 217 bhp.

      @lordbaronvonwalrusthethird3902@lordbaronvonwalrusthethird39025 жыл бұрын
    • Dan Smith Well look at that, I can now say my Mond is better than average in its range! Go me :) (Thanks for doing the research on the Mondeo for me, someone quoted that their 2.5 turbo was pumping out 297bhp but now I think its because they had it remapped, which make sense now).
