Duaffy's reaction to this scene is still the best on YT, IMO, given that a) she was one of the very few who genuinely didn't already know about it going into it, and b) since she watched Episodes I & II prior to Episodes IV & V, and, thus, already had a frame of reference as to who Anakin was, it gives her reaction to the scene another layer, in that it's not merely *_"OMG, Vader is Luke's father!"_* (as it was for most of us), but rather *_"OMG, Vader is actually Anakin!"_* Screw release order; it spoils the entire prequel trilogy.
The worst kind of people all in one video!
I actually knew this before I even saw this movie.
@@chuumon95 Yeah, unfortunately, a lot of people do now, thanks to 'cultural osmosis.' Of course, if you *do* already know it, you might as well just watch the whole saga in chronological order from the start.
@@ComeOnIsSuchAJoy Actually I saw the first movie with my Uncle at night when I was a kid. I think he rented it. But towards the end I started dozing off. In my high school years I decided to watch all 6 movies in chronological order. First the prequels and then the originals. The biggest surprise for me after the third prequel was finding out Luke and Leia were twins.
There's a famous bit of lore that George Lucas took advantage of the fact the line was going to be overdubbed to hide it. He knew it would change everything, so to avoid spoilers leaking out, he handed out an altered script. As far as everyone on set knew, the big reveal was "Obi Wan killed your father." Mark Hamill was told privately, so that he could react to what David Prowse (Vader's physical actor) was doing rather than what he was saying. Mark tells a funny story about Harrison Ford's reaction at the premier. When the line dropped, Harrison looked over at him "Hey kid, they didn't F__ ing tell ME that."
I love how they told Hamill “What I’m gonna tell you, I know it, George knows it and now you’ll know it. If it leaks, we’ll know it was you”
@@merchillioAnd Mark asked them ... "Is... Is this TRUE?" And they told him "... Search your feelings, but we're playing it as if it IS true" and Mark was gobsmacked.
I thought George told Mark right before shooting the scene?
I guess you all saw Hamill on the Graham Norton Show too 😂
@@DLFLux it wasn’t the first time he told the story, but yes

@@codythefriendlyskunkboy1780 or lost anything by now She didn’t lose a damn thing. She won every fight she had. So ridiculous
@@Bilski86 Fr. She shouldn't even have been the main character, Finn should have been. And Kylo never should have went on that whole regret and turn back to the light thing, he should have stayed a sith lord. If only all his other appearances lived up to that one village scene...
@@codythefriendlyskunkboy1780 Adam driver even admitted he wasn’t supposed to have a redemption arc. He said kylo ren was supposed to be the big baddy. Which proves they really have no idea wtf they’re doing at Disney
I wonder if anyone found his hand?🤔
Imagine watching this in the theater and having to wait 2 years to see what happens
It was actually 3 years.
Don't have to imagine it...I was 11 when this premiered, it was shocking to everyone--it was the biggest reveal to that date in cinema history. I didn't doubt Vader, because of how Luke reacted to it so viscerally. But yes, the wait to find out how it ended was insane, three years.
I did. 😂
I was 12. I was not sure what to believe, noone was. Was it a lie to get Luke to go Dark Side? Was Vader actually planning to betray the Emperor? Had Obi Wan and Yoda LIED to Luke? Everyone debated this for the next 3 years intently. And then we found out when Return came out. At the time I thought that this was the greatest reveal ever from great story writing. Now I know better. On a side note I think that the woman Leia mentions remembering as her mother was Bail's wife or her nanny who died before Leia became a teenager and not actually her remembering Padme. I'm sure others have thought of this, too.
3 Years Actually 😮
When my wife, who never swears, saw that she yelled "Oh bu-- sh--" about as loud as Luke yelled.
I think you'd be okay with typing bull out, or just use BS. Lol :)
@@xzonia1 Or he's reminded of her scary bush.
I love how this moment can still affect new viewers, more than 40 years after it came out. Totally stands the test of time.
I reckon they're totally pretending to first time react.
@@aaronbarlow4376THANK YOU!!!!! Like I’m supposed to believe these movie fans don’t know classics like these. Most of these reactions videos are straight B.S
@aaronbarlow4376: Most are fake (and you can tell), but a few are real.
@@aaronbarlow4376 it's one of the biggest twists in movie history, so of course most of these people know about it, but it's still possible that some people have never seen it. The original film came out almost 30 years ago so people don't reference it that much any more (it was pretty big in early meme culture but it definitely fell off). If you're going in blind there's a very real chance that you won't know it the reveal.
@@mrtoast244 I keep forgetting how old I am. I remember when my Gen X was just a bit older than the youth and they still knew all our pop culture as it was mainstream. Now kids haven't even heard of half the stuff I grew up with in the 80s. I also catch myself looking at girls in their late teens on a Saturday night thinking dirty thoughts, then I remember how old I am and realise I'm the creepy old guy haha.
When we saw this in the theatre way back, when Darth Vader said, "I am your father" we all completely tripped out. Everyone in the theatre was yelling and freaked out. Very exciting experience.
My family and I saw it at the drive in. People were going nuts, jumping out of their cars, yelling, honking. Exciting, indeed.
Unfortunately for me and others in the Denver area, local radio host who got to see it early spilled the beans on air. Was so totally pissed.
Going into this compilation, I had a hard time believing that there were people who didn't know Vader was Luke's father, but then I realized that people may know The Line, but they don't know the *context*. And it's also obvious that Luke getting his hand cut off isn't as well-known; seems like that part caught everyone off guard.
It’s nothing to do with context. A lot of these know for sure/ it’s mentioned and parodied in so many films, films I’ve seen one of these watch. But hey ho.
I’ve never felt so old
It's actually been long enough that the line's starting to fade from pop culture. Some people know it, but not where it's from. And there are a lot of people, especially those who don't watch scifi/fantasy, who don't know it at all. Keep in mind, there are a lot of people who avoided "nerd stuff" until the MCU went big, and are only now going back and watching this stuff.
The movie did come out 45 years ago, after all.
@@nazfrde i think it's actually 47. cause according to google it came out 1977 and it's 2024. my dad is 50 later this year. it's crazy to think that he lived through the release of everything star wars. time is wild, man.
Hannah's reaction from Just Trust Ash/Don't Trust Hannah, "my brain is scrambled," was hysterical and Amazing!!! hahahah

I thought it was common knowledge that Vader is Luke's father, But seeing people react for the first time is crazy
There are people out there who have absolutely no idea what The Matrix is about, and that movie's only half as old as Star Wars. Even if they know the "I am your father" line from pop culture, they still might have no idea of the context. For all they know, Han could be the one who says it to Luke.
Lot of fakers here too
And enjoyable,I'm re-living one of the most best scene in cinema history. A truly historic moment in time.
It is common knowledge. Probably the most famous spoiler in cinematic history. These people are just faking it.
Now, imagine it is 1980, and you are a 7-year-old watching this in a huge theatre where you can feel the entire audience hold its breath...for three years. Still a key moment in film history... ✋️
I was 9 and yeah, THAT was a crazy moment, then we had to wait three years for confirmation! Great times and back when Star Wars was amazing!
It's INSANE to me that people had to wait so many years to get a resolution to one of the most famous lines in movie history.
Three twists all in a row: the amputation of Luke's hand by his mortal enemy, the Darth Vader-as-father reveal, and Luke jumping for it rather than join his father on the Dark Side. I mean, DAMN that was EPIC seeing it for the first time.
This is so surreal. I'd seen A New Hope at least 5 times before I learned to write, and all three films nearly 100 times each before I was 13. I wore out multiple VHS tapes! The idea of people never having seen these is like if someone grew up without ever seeing water
Or seeing fire or breathing air...
A fair number of people have no idea what "VHS tapes" are/were either
I know exactly how you feel! I was only 3 when this came out, but, I must've seen the original trilogy AT LEAST 100 times on VHS as a kid.
Considering the line; “Luke, I am your Father!’ Is thrown around since the film came out. Even though the line is repeated wrong.
I’ve never seen them, but I wasn’t bullied at school.
you can tell which people have never seen and been sheltered from star wars, their reactions to this are the best there are, as they are the way we all felt when it came out

I can never get enough of seeing this scene especially for people seeing it for the first time. But it is such an indelible part of pop culture even non-Star Wars fans have heard that.
They were lucky. They weren't in the line waiting in the theatre for the movie, when Homer Simpson passed close from us and said that DV is Luke's Father
I'm glad I'm old enough to get that joke!
Dude, tag your spoilers! 🤣
Wow, what an ending. Who the thought Darth Vader with Luke Skywalker's father
😂😂😂 yes!
Quite probably that joke was based on many....many actual events
It's a good thing the light saber instantly sealed the wound or Luke would have bled to death.
This makes the light saber the more terrifying as the instant cauterization would make the pain worse. That said, this piece of information was not established at the beginning: when Obi Wan chopped off the arm of that fellow in the bar, there was a lot of blood on the floor.
@@Seele2015au Well that would hurt much less than a big open sloppy wound and Aqualish blood doesn't cauterize.
Instant cauterization.
This never gets old, people who have never seen Star Wars get the biggest plot twist that changed everything. From little kids to adults that somehow never got to enjoy the movies. And when my nieces are old enough, I will be there to show them the movies and see their reactions to the line.
I envy the people who were old enough to be able to watch this during it's first release in theaters
" I've been bamboozled ! ...." 🤣🤣😂😂
I remember seeing this in a theater at 8yo and it was pandemonium for this scene. I jumped up and turned to my parents in the row behind my like, "WHAT?!"
I love how everyone is like wtf and Alex is just mad he didn’t figure it out earlier😂
Oh my god, when Luke jumped in the last clip, I got an Ad for BetterHelp. Oh, that's so perfect.
This made me laugh so hard
I can’t believe some of these people with Star Wars posters in the background haven’t seen this or at least know this.
I remember see this in the theater at the ripe old age of 11 and like everyone else my jaw hit the floor and there was dead silence for a second or two before I could hear people mumbling 'no way' or 'not true' the ultimate plot twist, mind fuck, or whatever you want to call it. Absolutely brilliantly written and executed.
“Get away from me now.” 🤯😂
Actually, back in the 80s when it was released in theaters...EVERYONE was WTF! Nobody had a clue about Vader being Luke's father.
No, some people - - including little kid Star Wars fanatic me - - already knew because the novelization of the film had been released to bookstores in the United States before the film's release, but there was no social media back then, so the secret was maintained for most audience members seeing the film for the first time.
It was pandemonium, for sure. I was 13 and blacked out for a bit.
The great thing about there being so much Star Wars content these days is that no one really talks about this moment anymore, so it results in less people being spoiled.
Good point 👍
6:51 love it!
This is why it kind of bugs me when people watch the movies in chronological order instead of release order. They're not watching the story as it was intended to unfold, and this moment gets spoiled, among other things.
Machete order is best and most impactful... 4 and 5 establish who Vader is... then you go back to find out why and how Anakin fell to the dark side... and then you watch 6 to see Anakin's redemption, and you truly understand what the title "Return of the Jedi" means. It's Anakin's return. - PS - In episode III, the machete order gives a HUGE impact as the viewer sees the big reveal at the end... that Padme is carrying twins. The moment she names the girl, it's just as big a moment as the Vader reveal in ep.5. Far better than the reveal of Leia's identity in ep.6 where it just feels a bit trite.
Agreed, they definitely need to be watched in order of release.
Im lucky i always watch movies in order of release
The only exception is to watch Rogue One before A New Hope as it ups the stakes
When my mom wanted to watch them, she told me George Lucas stated in an interview that you should watch them in chronological order, so she took his word for it and not mine lol! I kept telling her we need to watch them in release order, but she didn't listen and this moment was ruined for her because she already knew. Why would George Lucas say for people to watch them in chronological order? That doesn't make sense at all.
Alex’s reaction was my favourite out of all of them 😂
Ash & Hannah are one of my favorite reactions ever.
G'day it's Steven from Down Under I love that younger generations are enjoying Star Wars so much, it's been part of my life since 1977 and it's so satisfying. MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU ALL
Fan: So, why didn't Vader use the Force to keep Luke from falling and capture him at that point? George Lucas: Shut up.
If Darth Vader ever used the force on his son, he would've been choking Luke.😂

Well, I met an old classmate many years ago who hadn't watched *any* of the Star Wars movies. She might've known anyway, though.
@@mmille10 the only Star Wars movie I've ever watched from start to finish was Return of the Jedi. But I've known for a long time now about this part. It's just so ingrained in the pop culture you couldn't escape it lol 😅.
We're getting old😊
I mean think of it this way, I was born in 75, these girls were born in like 2000, empire was 1980, so how many movies did you watch from 1955? I've still never seen casablanca, ben hur, ten commandments so it would make sense to me anyway
@@tru3sk1ll Star Wars is different though. We had a new trilogy in the late 90's to 05 with a new trilogy from 15 to 19. Because of this the original trilogy has stayed relevant.
I’m so jealous of people not knowing this scene and watching this for the first time!
I love when Vader gets hit and then he's like ,play time is over and in a second cuts his hand off
Yeah a lot of people don't get that Vader was toying with Luke the entire fight.
Same thing happens in the Kylo Ren/Finn fight in The Force Awakens. Finn seems to be doing OK, until he clips Kylo in the arm. A few seconds later, Finn is disarmed and lying on the floor with his back opened.
gotta love how struck speechless they are. That's power right there. Like most known meme ever and it still gets people
I have a hard time believing some of these reactions are genuine. How can you not know the line? I understand not knowing the context, but a couple reactions went a bit overboard.
I love seeing the Brits react to this - so many Americans know the line & see it coming, evenif they've never seen the movies. But British culture doesn't have all the millions of references to Star Wars throughout pop culture like we do in the US. There they have more references to Doctor Who, etc. Im sure theres still some impact, but its understandable that there would be people more sheltered from it there than here. Fantastic reaction!! Also so great to see Alex on here!!
One of the all time famous lines in movie history.
I love how after more than 40 years people is still shocked with this scene.
6:53 - Best reaction ever. She was terrified into submission. 😂
It has to be youtube acting right? In this day and age, it is virtually impossible to live without that getting spoiled. Like 'luke i am your father' is one of if not THE most known quote ever and its so damn hard to imagine someone not knowing that
He never says "Luke". A lot of people know the line "I am your father" but not the context. My son who is 18 knew the line from memes etc. but never knew the scene it was from. Of course he clicked after he said it, that that was the origin of it. Having that said, I'm sure there are a few fake reactions in there. I'd like to think not all 🤷♂
I know he doesnt say Luke. Im just saying that 'luke, i am your father' is the line everyone knows
It DEFINITELY is.
It never occurred to me that so many people didn’t know this ‘spoiler’ from Star Wars. It’s cool to watch people learn it for the first time.
@@edwardvincentlaybournwalle4991 I've seen it with people who knew the line and they were still shocked because seeing it in context is different from knowing it in pop culture with no knowledge of the movie.
Don't be naive. They're fake first time reactions.
@@aaronbarlow4376 Just because they're still surprised by a well-known twist when seeing it in context, doesn't mean they've seen the movie before. Again, I've seen it with first time watchers before and they were still surprised by the scene. Some literally said they knew the line, but they didn't know he was Luke's father or the overall context, when it would happen, and how it would make them feel when actually knowing the story as opposed to not knowing shit.
@@GoliathWarfare I guess I forget how old I am, I come from the generation that saw it in the theatres and it was hugely popular. Some Gen Z might not have seen it I guess.
@@aaronbarlow4376 some of these aren't Gen Z but new people are discovering Star Wars every day. I'm 32 and no one in my family or school liked Star Wars except my uncle who let me borrow his VHS collection as a kid but I don't think I would have seen it otherwise. My cousins and most of the kids I grew up with thought that Star Wars/Star Trek stuff was lame and nerdy. Nerd culture wasn't what it is now, lots more people are embracing this type of content where they might not have before, especially if they come from sheltered households.
Having grown up on these movies, it is so fun to see reactions to such an iconic twist!
I genuinely don’t understand how it’s possible to not know this at this point. I had a girlfriend who didn’t know, despite having heard the quote as much as anyone, and said it was because she’d never seen the movies and hadn’t been too involved in sci-fi fandoms. She had a lot of things like that that she didn’t know, and my response was always “Being Jewish doesn’t mean you don’t know who Santa is!” They’re about on the same level at this point. 😆
Star Wars was also not niche sci-fi - EVERYONE saw it. If you were a child and alive between '77 and '84 you saw the original trilogy in a theater. Then for many years, they were run on broadcast TV at least once a year, like The Wizard of Oz. But people who have grown up in the era of VHS/DVD/streaming don't know what it's like to live in a world where most people had only a handful of channels and you couldn't watch whatever you wanted whenever you felt like it, so their knowledge of the classic or blockbuster films of yesteryear has many more gaps in it than Gen-Xers and older Milliennials.
They're pretending for clicks. Make "content" by watching beloved movies, people click on it, they get youtube bucks. Asia and BJ are such big movie buffs, they've never seen a movie in their lives. Not even the ones they have posters of directly behind them.
Ashe n Hannah best reaction to that hands down 😂
Yes you can tell who knew and had seen this before
At least a few of them are honest that they heard the line before
I still get chills every time it's revealed.

It's good to see that after all these years, the statement "I Am Your Father," still sends shivers down people's spines.
Considering the fact that this scene was used everywhere, or parodied on different shows (The Simpsons, Tommy Boy, Family Guy, etc etc) that there is still people that have not seen the original.. well the original version instead on the re-edited special editions.
I like it most when people have these silent jaw-dropping moment, even with a breathy 'What?' or 'No way!' It is like when we were small kids and heard it for the first time!

Heart-felt reactions to a monumental scene I'll never forget ♥
Its so hard telling someone to watch star wars and then they ask "in what order should i watch for the first time?" Like the arguments for both chronological and theatrical release are good. On one side, watching the prequels first greatly enhances the depth of the characters (example, knowing chewbacca is a wanted fugitive for helping yoda escape kashyyyk and thats why he hangs with han solo, or seeing how similar leia is to her mother even without knowing her) and their relationships with each other. At the same time it makes many moments much more impactful in terms of storytelling (sc38 comes to mind, as well as luke removing vader's mask) On the other hand, you definitely have to acknowledge that it completely kills the shock factor of some key reveals, like luke and leia being siblings, or vader being luke's father. Its a very hard question to answer for me, but as a lore nerd in general, i need to know about the context of the world before i get invested, so someone like me would appreciate the chronological order more (1>6), but someone who doesnt constantly overthink and enjoys the surprise element would probably rather watch in theatrical release order (4-5-6-1-2-3)
Machete order. 4,5,2,3,6. Keeps all surprises and the (good) prequels become a big flashback scene. Look it up, there’s a great write up on it.

How is it even possible to NOT know this reveal? I must be getting old, this is surely one of the most widely known plot twists of all time?
It is. I would think anyone north of 30 would be aware of it. Even if you'd never seen the films, you had all the prequel hype in the early 2000s. It strikes me as improbable that you wouldn't find out / have some awareness of it.
It depends on what your culture/family allows you to watch.
If I had a Time Machine, I’d travel back to the debut night and watch people react to this scene in the the theater

What probably threw people off was the line so many were told, "Luke, I am your father." It's good to see that it was a surprise anyway.
I'm seriously surprised with how many people in the civilized world don't know this twist.
Okay, that FIRST one is absolutely INCREDIBLE, just for the fact that we've finally reached the point in history when people haven't heard anyone incorrectly say "Luke, I am your father" before.
Loved this! It took me straight back to 1980. I remember having discussions with my friends about whether or not Darth Vader was telling the truth. This is why I always tell first time watchers to watch in release order, not episode order.

I was born right after Return of the Jedi and my parents LOVED these movies. I never got to experience this for the "first time". I just always knew it. I'm sure I first saw it when I was 3 or 4 and just have no memory of learning this fact. It's fun to watch people react to it.
I love how there's people who *know the line,* yet don't see the reveal coming because they never knew the context.
What's so interesting is the fact that most people know the line but don't understand the context until they watch.

Well all the people reacting in the video didn’t know so….
@@glydoughnut9432 fair point. Still one of the most iconic moments in cinema history.
The one piece of lore i am fond of conveying is Vader was toying with luke pretty much the entire time. A few moments he was on the backfoot, but mostly in control. As soon as the one lightsaber swing connected, he fought seriously for a moment. Then luke was cornered and thus it plays out
I remember watching this at the Esquire Theater (it's no longer there) in Springfield, IL, in May, 1980. You could hear a pin drop when this happened.
I love how at least half of these its "oh that's where that's from"
They thought it was from Martin Sheen doing a cameo on Two and a Half Men.
I saw this when it first came out (I was 23). This scene shocked everyone in the theater.
I was five when I first heard this line. According to my Mom I apparently " Awww cmon he missed all his birthdays? What a terrible Dad!" Lol.
I was in my early 20's when this movie came out. I was so shocked.
The best part of this was in the script it said, "Obi-Wan killed your father!" On the day of shooting they told Mark Hamill and outside of James Earl Jones, George, and the EP he was the only one to know. Even the other cast didn't know UNTIL the premire.
😂😂 Hello, didn't they ever hear this line. It is pop culture.
I wasn't born yet, but both of my parents saw this move in theaters and they were gobsmacked like everyone else in the theaters they watched it at (they hadn't met yet).
This scene is what created the term "spoilers". People who hadn't had a chance to see the film yet were so pissed when local radio or TV folks who got 1st viewing revealed this rather than letting us see it without the warning. This was a 1st and led to scifi films really hiding their scripts.
Me at the beginning of this video: "This is where the fun begins!"
I enjoy the 1970s safety light blinking on and off, it really adds to the sci-fi atmosphere
"I am your Father" is probably the most famous line in cinema history, even people who have never watched Star Wars knows it. So it's really refreshing seeing people react to this line for the first time.
