  • As a South African in my sixties, the 1974 and 1997 Lions tours still hurt. But all credit to two absolutely fantastic touring teams. The British Lions are a magnificent rugby institution and long may they continue.

That aside. Thanks for your wonderful sporting comment. I have never been to South Africa, or on a Lions tour. I am, like yourself, in my sixties and recently retired. So I am thinking of going on next year's tour.

The exchange rate works immensely in your favour, so it will be a really cheap holiday. I’m in Johannesburg and would relish the opportunity to take you around.

The city slickers coming to the valleys and all that! The cameras were in the tunnel before the teams came out and Lawrence is bouncing on his toes and loving the challenge. A true test match animal. In that Lions series he took his lumps at the bottom of rucks. Top bloke, top player. Huge respect for the man as a player and even handed pundit.

  • I really enjoyed this as it encapsulates the uniquely special place Lions Tours have in rugby lore. As a New Zealander I'll never forget the fantastic 1971 side, the first to beat the All Blacks. Too many legends in that team to name them all. But the architect of that team was Carwyn James, a coach ahead of his time. I remember him yelling at his coaching sessions, "Think, think, think." The core of that team went on to beat the mighty Boks in 1974. Great memories.

  • I was fortunate enough to watch all three test matches. The second test in Durban was a real war of attrition. Martin Johnson was fabulous. He galvanized the Lions and truly put his body on the line in defence. I couldn't believe how poorly the Springboks kicked for posts in Durban. If I recall correctly, they didn't get one shot over. After the test match, I remember inviting a bunch of Scots into the box I was in and we stayed late into the night at Kings Park. Fantastic tour and great to hear the perspectives from one of the opposition and one of the stand out forwards on the tour.

  • 97/98 boks was a great era for the boks later that year they started with a record run of wins. Beating the northern hemisphere teams by huge margins but its great when players respect each other like these veterans. Sports fans can learn a thing or two from rugby players no respect on field but the world of respect off field.

  • Great Interview... well done. Listen it's always a tremendous honor to play in these tests and the physicality that goes along with these tours is immense, SA has a point to prove and so has the Lions , as a rugby fanatic it will be bloody and it will be tight but still it's a hooligan' s game played by gentlemen. It's not about winning the game but coming together as a brotherhood and defending the honor of your country. There will be blood and tears left on the field but still 30 players shaking hands afterwards and congratulating eachother on being a honorable opponent. From a Springbok supporter.

  • Getting big and strong has always been an important measure among South African boys as we grow up: not in terms of aesthetic physique or how much you can lift, but how tough you are, how much of a beating you can endure/dish out and keeping up intensity from start to finish. Slowing down, lowering intensity or "wimping" out has always been frowned upon here. It's harsh, but it builds a good rugby player. When you're working on the farm, you don't take a break while your buddy/brother is working next to you: you push to do one bit more than him, competing for the rest of your life, which makes you seem like a "beast" when someone else joins in on the work without ever being in such a tough environment. Some take it too far as although the players play like beasts on the field, they tend to be gentle and kind people off the field. Sometimes the passion for the sport and the belief in victory and unity as a result are even more important than tangible physical aspects, something which the Bokke also has as an edge.

This is a great interview and this type of content is having an impact in this sense of build up that we're starting to feel. I would love for the same Springboks team that won the 2019 RWC to be the team that plays the 3 Lions tests, but we know that this will not be the case, sadly. With Scotland and Ireland making a quick RWC exit, then the Springboks beating Wales and then England in that final, the Lions will be fired up for what should be an epic clash of the rugby titans!! Bring on the Lions tour to South Africa to face the World Champion Springboks!!! (If any incoming tourists get invited to social events with South Africans, don't turn down those invites. You will love the experience of mingling with us locals around a braai, before watching the games together).

  • The physical bullying he speaks of goes back to the Boer war. In the prison camps the English guards would play against the Boers and this was the chance the prisoners had to stick to the guards - and they gave it their all! Once the war was over, the resentment was obviously still there so they kept that playing style. Now, all these years later the anger has long gone but the mindset lingers.

Respect your enemies and thrive in adversity!..and a big sorry regarding recent events(you know, you know what I'm talking about?), but don't say we didn't told you so! ,)... Good luck, and may the best team win!

  • Good stuff lads. Cant wait for the next time the Lions come here to Kiwiville. A draw last series was a lucky escape but the AB's have some great players across the park and the young guys not at the AB's level yet will be firing on all eight in the next two years, give or take a year or so either way., and should be first choicers by the time of the next Lions Tour here. I remember as a kid when i first saw the Lions in the 1973 Tour. There has been a lot of Lions whove stuck with me all my life in the first 2 times yur Lions toured here, Delme Thomas, Willie John of course Campbell Lamberton rings a bell too, the sublime JPR Williams, John Ducham, Phil Bennett, there were some great players in the Lions teams. I lived by Lancaster Park in Christchurch, used to sell Programmes and Souvenirs too, we were all rapt when The Lions hit NZ shores and what an atmosphere at Lanc Park when game time finally arrived. We talked about it at school for the next ten years, ha ha ha.

    • I remember going to the Lions match at Lancaster park, and being down on the fence on the embankment. I was amazed at how white JPR Willams' legs were, and the smell of linament. I was also amazed at the stream of urine flowing down into the gutter along the front of the fence....ah the good old days. I also recall the bright ribbons and rosettes and badges that you sold ! They were displayed on bits of cardboard I think...

This one will be weird because of Covid but it’s also the only one of the three I haven’t joined as a fan - gutted that I won’t be able to right that wrong this time. Oh well, maybe in 12 years… 🇬🇧 🦁

Players are players and I learnt to be proud and happy for the Lions players even while still loving my Boks (and still hurting 🤣) One of the reasons I just love rugby... For the most part, the players are also good people.

    • @@sonnyblack6121 too slightly disagree please remember firstly he had set up the try that enabled England to win a cup final in 2003. He also had to reinvent himself as a player from a fast, mobile and dynamic loose forward to a tight close-quarter specialist No 8 after an ankle injury. Dallaglio also had the ability to manipulate refs and like all greatest loose forward trios, he was part of a trinity which contained Neil Back the prototype of a then 7, who had given McCaw and before then Jones et al a good run for his money despite his size and Richard Hill. Now, Hill, in my opinion, was the best forward rugby had ever seen, McCaw IMO was phenomenal and the best 7 I have seen on a pitch. Hill, on the other hand, was the best forward player no matter what and without him, Woodwards England side would not have ascended to their heights. Back to Dallaglio. The only No 8s I felt could have challenged him at his peak time (before Read so relax) where: Scott Quinnell (who was the best in ball carrying department throughout the world at 8 at one stage), Simon Taylor (before injury), Anthony Foley while good was not as influential as Dallaglio, and then later both Parisse and Harinordoquy. NZ has had some of the best loose forwards ever, but Dallaglio falls into that category for what he too did to games.

    • @@charlespc8855 Better than Buck Shelford,Zinzan Brooke, Kieran read, Michael Jones, Richie McCaw, Jerome Kaino, Jerry Collins and Josh Kronfeld??? How many of those people that you mentioned would be picked before any of these guys???

      @sonnyblack6121@sonnyblack61213 жыл бұрын
    • @@sonnyblack6121 Wayne Shelford, was like 15-20 years before Dallaglio, no one can actually analyse his games instead you're stating this based of the reputation of HAKA building and ripped bollocks and yes he was a hard bastard but the game was different then. Kaino was after Dallaglio same applied to Read both great athletes, but of a different era. However, both were taller and faster being able to play at 4,6 & 8. Read too like Dallaglio had the best players in their positions around his consistently. However, Read once he lost his zip towards the end could not tighten his game as well as Dallaglio did as a No 8 and found himself belittled by papers and under pressure for Savea to be selected. Brooke while famous for his drop goal antics, could not perform the tight antics. Sunshine player but he did set the skillset for No 8s to the next level but it can be argued he was the first back row to play like a back more than a forward. Jerry Collins may he rest in peace was not as all rounded as Dallaglio and Hill. but he was a great defender, could carry well at times. He was a dream 6, hard, mobile and yet I'd say he was the pre-Kaino prototype in which Kaino learned and evolved his game from. Why because different eras. Josh Kronfield well he was an openside flanker I am talking about blindsides and No 8s primarily. Better than Neil Back maybe, but then again George Smith probably trumps both players. However, tries win games and Back did that more times than any other forward. Michael Jones too, predominately an openside, was more athletic than the rest and did do well when he converted to 6. End of the day its my opinion, you are welcome to yours but see past your NZ glory ideals and remember other loosies such as Pinnear, Dallaglio, Hill, Back, Burger also won world cups and are revered. Also if you want to compare players be reasonable with the time frame, We are talking 1990-2007 kinda frame with this context. I'm also not a professional athlete but half the time players get picked on reputation over ability, its rugby politics 101 from amateurs to professionals.

  • Answer to Dallaglio: if you had grown up in South Africa in the 1970s and 1980s, lived in that dysfunctional environment, gone to the army, been the pole cats of the world and all of this against the historical backdrop of the 2 South African wars against the British (if you know the history), you would understand the "playground bully" mentality of the South African rugby teams. Rugby was one of the only releases for us as South Africans of a certain age. All the same, you were a great player and I'm sure all South African rugger fans would agree.

    • @Stephen Strange You need to read up on your history. The British introduced concentration camps against the Afrikaaners, who, quite arguably after hundreds of years of pioneering life in Southern Africa, were an indigenous people of Africa by that stage, and certainly consider themselves that. It was the systematic humiliations and cultural degradations by the British to the Afrikaaners, that helped to fan the ideology of apartheid in South Africa when the Afrikaaners took power.
