  • Im a truck driver and my Bubby is with me 24/7. We stay out for 3 weeks at a time. Dobermans are a high energy breed. We stop multiple times per day to burn of energy and play time. He does great in the truck. Just takes effort and understanding.

    • Please check your insurance providers policy on town trucks. I lost my female CO while crossing the Mojave desert on a good highway. I hit something and had two flats and only one spare. Tow trucks wouldn't rescue us because I had my dogs with me. She didn't survive 8 hours in 110° heat. I have spoke with big rigs who had the same response because her traveled with a cat. Just a warning so you can check on it and avoid heartbreak.

    • My neighbor got a puppy and I saw that he tore up their newly planted grass. It sat there like a big dork with mud all over his face knowing he made a bad decision. I thought it was hysterical. I watched one cool thing, when a person knocked at the door, he walked up super quiet and silently waited. Very impressive, even though he still was a big dork. I have Pits but love Dobies

  • We had Dobies for 16 yrs. They are the most beautiful and wonderful dogs. Our girl lived to be 11.5 and our boy lived to 14 yrs, 3 months. Dobies are prone to DCM and cancer. We lost our boy in Jan 2023 and it broke our hearts. Dobies are not like other breeds in that they read people and have human qualities. Highly intelligent animals and the pack leader always needs to be at least one step ahead of them at all times. If you have a dobie or are considering one, then be extremely kind to them b/c they get hurt feelings very easily.

  • Dobermann is the most unique and special breed, no other can compare. The closest in "uniqueness" to it would be the Rhodesian Ridgeback. Have owned a Dobermann since '87. Their downfall (as with any popular pure breed) is, in fact, their "popularity" and unscrupulous breeders trying to take advantage of this popularity, and not caring about the health of the breed.

    • Absolutely agree 👍 I love their intelligence and loyalty, of course their elegance, but their health conditions give most of them a too short life Even if i think dogs anyway have a too short life in general, that of Dobermans is (like that of Rottweilers and Great Danes) unacceptable short And it's really difficult to cure this breed from their health issues, because of their specific physical skills and look I'm grateful that life sent me (for the moment) my third Dutchy (KNPV) "rescue". They are absolutely not comparable with Dobermans, but intelligence, loyalty and strong own independent individual way of thinking and deciding...protective....and! no health issues and capability to adapt to all environmental conditions Last but not least their life span up to 16 years in good health makes them a perfect breed and i hope breeders of Doberman can learn of Dutchy KNPV breeders to regenerate their amazing dogs

The dutchy is prone to degenerative myelopathy and suffer from seperation syndrome also very independent and strong willed. If you're happy with your Dog fine but don't spread bull shit stories about other breeds when you no not what you are talking about.

Surprisingly gentle and kind despite their no-nonsense looks. If you’ve seen videos of Mike Tyson in middle age - charming, smiley, thoughtful, philosophical - that’s how I regard Dobermans. • The Doberman became very popular in the 1970's due to the "Doberman Gang" movies that came out then. I saw the movies as a kid & wanted a Doberman the worst way. However, in my experience 90% of the Dobermans I ever encountered were the biggest cowards & the other 10% were vicious monsters. I think I've only seen two Dobermans in my life that were truly Noble animals & they were both professionally trained. My favorite breeds are the Great Pyrenees & the Jack Russel. The Great Pyrenees instinctively protects your chickens & goats from Predators & a pair of them within a fenced in parameter around the house is great home security. The Jack Russel is an excellent mouser. My female had taken 5 mice by the time she was 6 months old. A pair of them inside the house is an excellent alarm system if the outside dogs alarm & you don't hear them or if someone actually makes it inside the house. Of course, a professionally trained guard dog is the best way to go but, most people can't afford professional guard dog training. The Doberman is a truly handsome animal & with proper training, it's an excellent choice but, I see them as being very similar to Pit Bulls. Very dangerous in the hands of a bad owner but in the right hands, capable of being the best friend a family could have. I just prefer a dog that instinctively does what I want it to & I don't have to put a lot of time into training them beyond basic house breaking & coming when called.

  • They don't live long enough. On Monday 25th March we had Max our 45kg (100lb) Doberman put to sleep. He had not long turned 7. He had osteosarcoma in his tibia and it spread at an alarming rate. He was an amazing dog. Massive personality. A huge very gentle giant. A true velcro dog. I love Dobermans, but I don't think I'd have another unless it was a cross with a sturdier breed with less inherent breed problems. Beautiful dogs, but far too susceptible to illnesses.

It took about a year for him to trust me, but now, he's a happy guy and my best friend. All of my dogs, except one, lived to be 14. My last one was 14 1/2...and my rescue is around 7 or 8 now. None of them had major medical problems except the blue, who I had to put to sleep around 9 because of incurable skin problems. I got the rescue because I couldn't find a puppy in my area. I like to pick my puppies out personally and didn't want one shipped to me from out of state. Was really surprised how scarce the breed had become in 15 years.

The people who had her before were afraid of her...and the people in the shelter were also afraid of her and practically pushed her on me without any adoption fee. 😂 First couple of days my mom and I had her, she wrecked the house completely...chewed up our vinyl-covered kitchen chairs, put holes in our mattresses and box springs and pulled all of the curtains off our windows. My mom had a fit and told me to bring her back to the shelter, since it was her or the dog! I brought her back...and as I was walking back to the car, I could hear her crying. When I got home, my mom had made coffee and was sitting on one of our gutted kitchen chairs. I got a cup of coffee and joined her on the other wrecked chair. We didn't say anything, but after 5 minutes or so, my mom said "It's too quiet here. Go back and get the dog.". Being an obedient child, I sure did! 😄😄 When she came back, she never chewed anything up again. We had her for 14 years. Her name was Sheba. She was my soul mate...the love of my life! • Of course the majority of comments will be of Dobbie owners waxing poetic about their wonderful dogs. In reality, most owners are way overwhelmed by this breed. I had a cop friend who was super irresponsible with his untrained highly over reactive dogs. One bit him very badly while they were “just playing”. The dogs spend most of the days stuck bored in a backyard to bark all day. Or the back of a pick up truck unrestrained to threaten anyone walking by in parking lots. These owners think this is so cool. Hahahah. The man in the beginning of this post has one of those obscene retractable leashes on his dog. Terrible! Retractable leashes should be outlawed but of course they won’t be. That right there tells me this idiot either doesn’t ever leave his mutt or is not forthcoming about how powerful and highly aggressive and reactive this breed is. Then, when one dog dies from the myriad of health issues bad breeders impose on them, they just go out and breed or buy another one. Perpetuates the vicious cycle.

Technically he's had 3 owners before I got him so he needed a little work with some issues. But he's doing great now. We're in a 2 bedroom condo and he gets many walks a day, is pretty much a couch potato when we're inside. But he gets out a lot and gets to run in a field and has many other doggy friends he plays with. Of course, there are a few people here with the ankle biters who won't let their dog meet mine because they have that "It's a Doberman. It's GOING to kill my dog" mentality. I've had 4 through my lifebut currently don't and some of that is having problems finding a good breeder. Also and Esp with the regulations and how hard it is to find a vet to crop the ears. For me, a dobe completely loses its look without the ears cropped. And I've had dobes with natural ears also but it just isn't the same.

So that look is what a Dobe is to me. Sure they're the exact same dog with the ears natural but that look is very different and cropped ears are part of the Dobe image that was engraved in me from the beginning. Also this look is how they started out and what Louis Doberman envisioned, created with slight revisions (cropping and tail docking). I honestly think the change and with all these regulations, this may be partially why the breed is dying off more and more in some countries.

They're also aware of animal cruelty problems in producing all these adorable purebred puppies, and don't want to incentivise puppy mills. For both these reasons, many animal lovers are going to shelters and rescues to find their new canine companion. • That's not true. The guy who does Doberman Planet on KZhead did his research and found a reputable breeder and still had to crop his dog's ears. Cropping has to be done by a certain age or the ears won't stand up correctly. I guess some breeders give the buyer a choice. My Dobie is pure bred, AKC registered and has floppy ears. I would prefer cropped, but he was 10 months old when I got him.

A backyard breeder or a puppy mill will tell you it's your choice and charge you more for the crop, or send you home with a floppy and sloppy eared pup and tell you it's your responsibility. • It's interesting to observe how norms and regulations can influence the perception and popularity of a breed. Although the ban on tail docking and ear cropping in Europe may have altered the traditionally expected appearance of Dobermans, it's important to remember that the essence and value of a dog don't solely reside in its appearance. The intelligence, loyalty, and training ability of Dobermans continue to make them incredible companions. Perhaps it's time to redefine what makes a Doberman-or any breed, for that matter-'captivating', focusing more on their character and less on specific aesthetic standards. After all, the true beauty of a dog lies in its personality and the love it offers.

The appearance has also changed significantly, from large and strong to slim and rank. The ban on docking has changed the Doberman from a noble dog to a Labrador. • I thought you'd explain more, like how they used to allow tail and ear docking, but now it's considered a disqualifying factor for cruelty. The fact is that he looked much nobler with raised, narrow ears and no tail than he looks today. In fact, today he looks more like an ordinary hunting dog. Then the cases when he attacked the owners and the geneticist's conclusion that around the age of seven a brain disorder occurs that causes him to suddenly become irritable. Very superficial video.

    • Ahh, the old "Their brains grow too big for their skull" myth.

    • The brain swelling crap is a myth. I had several that lived to be over 12 years old and none of them went crazy. Also at least here in the U.S. docking and cropping are still the preferred way to go with Dobies. It is not cruel if done properly by a vet and pain meds are given after the surgery. They are completely back to normal the day after the ears are cut.

    • @@bigjimmy6690 I did not write that their brain swells or that it is too big for the skull. Regarding the ears and tail, they cannot compete in Europe if they are docked.
