This is how you can convert your Doberman's age into the equivalent human age. We'll also find out exactly how fast Dobermans age as compared to other popular dog breeds. Thanks to an amazing study we can now do this conversion in a way that's accurate to the Doberman breed specifically. This is how to find how old your Doberman would be if they were a human. Or how many "dog years" old your Doberman is. We'll also talk about what the official life expectancy of the Doberman is and how that conflicts with what recent studies are saying.

  • My male doberman, who passed away earlier this year, lived to the nice old age of 15-1/2 years old. He was running around and still moving great until 2 days before he passed away. I'm so thankful for all the time I got with him. Note... he was still in tact and almost his entire life, I had him on a higher end puppy food (initially because he needed the higher fat to keep his weight up).... which I suspect the extra minerals and vitamins may have helped.... along with his hormones from being in tact.

    • @ドーベルマンライフ I had to switch brands a few times over the years. Usually the supplier was having a hard time getting it in. I just try to get as clean as possible with killing the pocket. Try to avoid corn, wheat and soy if possible. I look for 15%-20% fat....15% minimum! I would also let him free feed. So he had access to eat whenever he wanted..... same as my now 4 year old does. But one of the keys to the longer life is he was in tact still..... not neutered. The way most neutering is done in the US, they strip the animals of their hormones which messes up their health and creates more health issues as they turn 5, 6, 7 years old.

It is quite disheartening though when you try to get in to see a veterinary cardiologist, there seem to be very few of them and their appt are booking about 3 or 4 months out. We got lucky and found one about 100 miles away that had an opening at the end of November. Hoping to have another year with him at this point. But who knows?

  • We just lost our Irreplaceable Dobie, Elvis. Born March 29, 2010 Passed November 26, 2022 He was declining physically over the last two years. Recently He started losing weight and wasn’t eating like normal. Took him to the vet on a Wednesday for treatment for diarrhea, to look over his teeth incase that’s why he wasn’t eating and to check his heart because his whole body was heaving and his heart was pounding. found out he was in heart failure. He had a murmur and an extremely abnormal rhythm. That night he ate a handful of food but would not take any of his reg meds or any of the new ones to help his heart and fluid. He never ate again, never took any meds again. He would drink water. All he wanted to do was lay in his bed. We had to help him out to potty and carry him back in. I thought his heart was going to pump out of his chest after this tiny activity each time. We made the tough decision to let him go on Saturday. It seemed to happen very fast. Elvis has been on thyroid meds and allergy meds since 3 years old. Before he passed he was also taking meds for anxiety, inflammation, pain, nerve pain and arthritis. He had surgery for GDV 2 years ago at age 10. He had 3 cancerous tumors removed from the roof of his mouth in early 2021. He had zero gray hair, he had all of his teeth. He had no hearing issues and his eyesight was great for an old man. His mind was all there. We are in pain and lost without him. I hope some of this info helps with the data you collect and use.

  • My Dobe lived to be 13 years 9 months. He was pretty active up until his last week. He did have an enlarged heart in the last year but that is not what caused him to pass. He had severe arthritis in his back and that eventually paralyzed him. He was such a trooper through all that. He did develop thyroid disease when he was about 7 and took a pill twice a day for that. He would "remind" me when he needed his pill even though treats were not always associated with medicine. I always believed he figured out that the pills made him feel better and he needed them or maybe it was the routine that Dobermans are so known for and that was the reason he took them with such enthusiasm. He will be missed but I am thankful for all the years I had with him.

  • My father was given a rescue Dobie female around 1985. The vet thought she was 5 or 6 then. She lived another 10 to 12 years with out any health issues. She died peacefully in her sleep at what we assume was 16 to 18 years old. My first Dobie, a blue male born in 1986 lived to be 14. He developed thyroid issues & COPD late in his life. My next Dobie was a red male born in 2004, died of lymphoma at 10 yrs old. My last was a black female died at 6 yrs of DCM. She developed symptoms & died within a weeks time. So in my experience, they aren’t living as long. It’s so sad because they’re such good dogs.

  • I'm late to your videos, only started watching them recently, forgive me? LOL. That was a slight bit of humor. Having tried to adopt a Dobie for a few years, I tried rescues, animal shelters. When I was contacted by AKC breeders, the cost was out of my range. Recently, I filled out a questionnaire with an AKC breeder of Dobermans. They contacted me! It's the right time, the right price, within a reasonable distance to go & pick him up. A 5 hour drive one way then a 5 hour drive back is reasonable for me as I have driven 19 - 25 hours straight except to stop to refuel & use the restroom. I'm a high energy person, so, a high energy dog is a great fit for me. A Doberman is a great fit. When I pick my boy up from the breeders in a week, he will be my fifth Doberman. He was whelped December 17, 2023. He's just a baby, now! Loving your videos, so much great information. Thank you!

Hopefully we can have at least a year more, but the sad reality is maybe a few more months. The cost here in Canada is extremely expensive, $410 per month. • Interesting video. Yes, it is a real shame our Doberman dogs have such a short lifespan. In older doberman books I have it was said a Doberman lived about 16 years. So is it because the food was better back then? Left over, butchered livestock, table scrap from a time when people lived mostly on a farm and the food was more wholesome. Instead of kibbles made from God knows what (diseased and dead cattle, road kills, antibiotic ridden livestock, you name it). Also back then, dogs were pretty much free to roam around and they got much more exercises every day. Also today the Doberman is more inbred than back then. So the specimens are weaker due to gene depletion (kind of a redneck thing, like me, my sister and our children....) Personally my older Doberman was 14 years old and I had to put him to sleep because he paralyzed due to Wobblers. Otherwise he could have lived longer. My shorter lived Doberman was 4 years old. She died suddenly after a full day of playing and running around. Probably heart failure. Now I don't take any chance, every day I give my dogs supplements of Coenzyme Q10 and Acetyl-L-Carnitine. also I gave them homemade capsules (those kits were you can make you own capsules) I fill them with pure Cayenne pepper powder. Cayenne pepper as the CoQ10 and Acetyl-l-Carnitine are well known beneficial supplements for the hearth. Also at every meal I sprinkle powdered Fennel seeds on their food. Fennel seed help to suppress formation of gas in the stomach. I do this since I had 2 Doberman who developed bloating during the night. One who died from it and another who was saved in extremis by an emergency surgery at 2 AM (and $4000...) I currently have 12 Dobermans buried in my backyard and 4 living in the house with me. I missed them so much, even the ones who have been buried for 25 years... I hope these personal experiences could help your Doberman to have a longer life.

    • Being cross-bred like that is going to make your dog a lot healthier.....while pure breeds are wonderful,The more hybrid the dog is the healthier it tends to be.....This is due to too much cross-breeding inside a closed circle of breed lines.....The bad DNA tends to pile up that way.....So it's a good chance your dog's going to live a long healthy life because it's crossbred with another breed

  • I know there have been a handful of universities doing some research on DCM. I'm not aware of any published data, just universities asking for participants in studies. I'm not sure if you have researched anything regarding that or done a video on it? Would be a very interesting video. Also gives some hope we may oneday either have a cure or at least a direct link genetically to help with breeding. Because even right now if you have two dobermans that are negative to DCM1 and 2 can still potentially breed dobermans with DCM or get DCM themselves.

  • The aging thing changes for a LOT of factors. Breed, size, weight, current health, activity level, and stress levels are just some factors to name. A chihuahua will probably age at roughly 3 years for every human year, which is why they can live to be almost 20 or older. Where as a Great Dane or so usually lives between 6 and 8 (if lucky 10 and sometimes a little older)? I would say just focus on enjoying the life that was shared with you and give as much love as possible until the passing :)

If you have the time and energy and intelligence to train the dog-then I cannot imagine a better dog than a Doberman. One thing-I never leave mine alone overnight and that has impacted my ability to go to certain hotels and people’s houses. • Sometimes dog shows have health clinics where a certified vet cardiologist can do ultrasounds on your Dobe for usually less or a reduced cost than going to the actual vet office. And the results can be recorded at OFA office too. Von willebrands disease is another thing that can be tested for with a blood draw. Especially helpful to the vet when they are spayed and neutered. Please let your breeders know when your dog dies and/or if you get them tested and find those markers that John talks about - just so they know and can be more informed if they want to continue breeding that line or not. Hope that helps.
