New Tank From Belarus - Should Ukraine be Afraid?

2022 ж. 1 Там.
108 679 Рет қаралды

Belarus recently unveiled their latest modernization of the T-72 tank, called T-72BM2. Many people were intrigued by this tank because it appears to have Relikt Explosive Reactive Armor mounted on the front of the tank, something which Russian T-72 tank upgrades do not have, at least not in active service. But this tank might not be what it first appears to be.

    • I don't think you need to doubt, I think it just stone cold doesn't. The estimated Belarusian military budget is so tiny, like, well under 100 million usd, compared to the some 60 billion for Russia. Even if that number leaves 3x their actual budget out, that's still an order of magnitude less than Russia. Forget actually developing military hardware, idk how that's even enough for an unmotivated conscript army to do enough preventative maintenance to keep old soviet stock from falling apart in storage. Idk if they can procure anything new with a budget like that, but hey, maybe bolting some dubious quality ERA on a tank and calling it modern is worth it to make someone actually believe it

He lost majority of his political capital in 2020 and in 2022, when Russia attacked Ukraine, Kremlin no longer had incentive to even make a show of supporting him. No one asks his opinion, no one offers him anything, there are no deals or compromises Russia proposes to him. He just receives orders and speech texts from Kremlin. There is no more way for him to talk back. And with that, do you really think that Russia is interested in having another competitor on arms market or to lose a contract? Since now Belarus can't be used to avoid sanctions like in 2014-2020, it's game over for local arms production. There were a few attempts to do some new things locally, but those people either already left the country or profession that barely pays.

    @fungalcoffee@fungalcoffee Жыл бұрын
    • So like mount on top of these metal cages ERA? That would not help against javelin because it is tandem warhead and would just go through 1 layer of ERA. But it might work to put ERA on the roof of the tank and on top of the cage, that could defeat both warheads. That would add a frickin lot of weight tho, just to protect from on specific weapon in a certain situation. I don't think it would be worth if the tanks become significantly slower because of it.

      @ratlingzombie8705@ratlingzombie8705 Жыл бұрын

But it can't effectively Disengage or flee without exposing it's weaker armor. it can't hit and run, quickly change positions under fire. I've seen T-80's doing some crazy Tactics in Ukraine and getting away with it. while T-72's are just getting absolutely Mauled. Seeing T-72's in towns running through houses because they need out of there fast and can't expose the rear armor. The T-72 would be a Decent tank if it had at least 8-12mph reverse. and better thermals. Russia designed Amazing vehicles/planes/guns/ships/ect. but never have enough money to Make them great. What the west has is...money. You can make a 2003 Honda civic beat a new corvette with enough money in the Honda Russia can Build great stuff. but if it can't afford it.. The T-72 was suppose to be a Cheap, decent. MBT. rugged, decent armor. just in the front. fast moving forward. While the Red Guards used T-64's and it's bigger brother the T-80. which was suppose to be replaced by T-95 or T-14. Never has... I believe the factory that built the T-64/80 was a Ukraine Tank factory.. which im sure is why Ukraine's army MBT is the T-64. The T-72 was the only real option for Russia. The T-90 is just a redesigned. Uparmored T-72 with a new wielded Turret. These tanks really aren't built for this Era. Including many western tanks. Smash a M1A2 with a javelin, Brimstone, or Spike. especially New Top-down attacking ATGM's. im sure it won't fare much better.. But I'll tell ya what. Id much prefer a Abrams or leopard. with the ability to gtfo of there when im in trouble. vs a T-72 that often times.. it's safer to bail out than turn the tank around and Flee. ending up a charcoaled Body soldered to the Turret ring.

The biggest gap to the western money driven economy was IT. Russia and the soviet union would not stand a chance against a western army of similar size with ther advantage in sensors, satellites and drones. Yes soviet union did produce a lot of battle tested products that are good money value. But the west still has the tech edge and self heating toilet seats on top.

    • I wouldn't say they can design amazing stuff, or at least they can only design it but not actually build it. I would still take a western tank over any of the comparable designs Russia has made. Their doctrines haven't really changed with the idea that they use saturation above all else. Which translates to the equipment that they actually use. With being meant to be cheap to build so they can have a bunch of it, but they can't operate very effectively in limited quantities. Which alongside the fact that modern tank rounds are coming close to making Relikt almost a non issue to penetrate.

All the tanks that lack it are in danger of being easily destroyed by advanced ATGMs. Sure ERA will reliably defeat shitty heat missiles without tandem warhead like the AT-4 and RPG-7s. But anything more advanced is known to punch through ERA especially missiles with big warheads.

    • Passive protection isnt exactly 100 my dude. Todays ATGM's make short work of almost all protection systems. Tank combat isnt like it was 20 years ago. The Russians just didn't get the memo. They are basically more of a mobile artillery and support weapon to be used at long range for troop support. Even the Abrams have been rekt in the middle east as well as the leopard a2 from old Soviet kornet missles. Both sides of the isle are arguing about tank defense but fail to understand the Modern battlefield. Im not saying you shouldn't bother with passive protection,but its not exactly the way todays role plays out for tanks. We're only seeing what was predicted decades ago. Eventually a modern conflict would show how tanks aren't meant to be front runners anymore. The ATGM is so common that shooting at a tank with passive protection might as well be as common as shooting at it with a bullet. May take few but it will get the job done eventually. Plus the biggest issue with passive protection is a threat to the infantry around the tank.

      @luciankristov6436@luciankristov6436 Жыл бұрын
    • APS isn't a fool-proof solution. Against a modern military, it's a liability and not a defensive tool. APS functions by using high-frequency radar to see if incoming missiles or tank rounds are coming at it. This radar is like ringing a giant dinner bell to anti-radiation missiles fired by aircraft or ground launchers from tens to hundreds of miles away. When you're fighting separatists or terrorists in sandles and mud huts, it's great. Against a near-peer threat, you're going to mostly be turning them off unless your side has complete air superiority to make eating a HARM far less of a chance. Even if the APS engages such missiles successfully, these missiles usually have many times more explosive mass than an ATGM or tens of times more than large artillery shells. The explosion above a tank with one of these missiles would end up killing the crew inside and detonating ammo through explosive overpressure.

Poland has no real heavy industry, and the last tanks were made in 90s, They are called PT-91 are terrible, possibly even worse than original T-72M1. Because Poland couldn't design an engine, they used old soviet engine(v46-6), and made cylinders larger. Result? Every 25 kilometers there was a problem with an engine, or transmission. The fire control system also had problems. There was no good stabilisation, so tank still cannot shoot while driving. Reactive armor is also kontakt-1 level. Nowadays Poland didn't design anything really. Rosomak is licensed, Borsuk is still in development, and the reports really vary. Some say it's bad, some say it's good. Now how do you think, Poland will be able to produce Hyundai Doosan engines, and S&T transmission, when even Koreans had a big problem with these? Polish MoD can say anything, especially that elections are coming. They are constantly talking about 300k military army, but don't talk about how terrible demographics are, about soon to be 20% inflation rate, and how young man are not interested in military service(over 60% of people in officer schools are women).

Still no panoramic sight, yee yee ass thermal sight, knock off relikt, nothing even close to an active protection system (soft kill or hard kill), same old gun, same old engine, same old hull. Honestly the mass produced weapons of the soviet era are hoplessly outdated at this point, from AK to T-72 from Msta-s su-27. The point of those systems was that they were on the same technologycal plateau as western weapons, just one step inferior but produced in riddicolous quantities and cheaply, and yes i agree that in the '70s the Soviet Union was scary as fuck and theyr tactics might have worked and they could have wan in an all out conventional war. Today however Russia is basically two generations behind and even the upsides of high quantity and low cost of the systems it operates are becoming meaningless because of how ineffective they are. While the west is putting thermal optics and red dots/acogs on every rifle and is working on even having ballistic computers on them, Russia fields a sub-par modernization of the ak-74m with iron sights. While the west is working on updating Abrams the Leopard and Challenger with active protection systems and even starting to make preoare the replacement of those, the Russians are fielding T-72 without even appropriate ERA and never got close to mass produce the T-14, as far as i know there might be less than 20 protoypes with half in operational conditions. While the west is using pzh-2000, k9 thunder, himars, m270 and is planning to move to an ever more hi-tech version of missiles and shells, Russia needs to use 6000 shells every day to achieve something in Ukraine and can't get even close to develop Koalitsya or uragan 1m. While the west is buying 5th gen F35 jets in bulk and is starting to develop 6th gen fighters, Russia is struggling to field 4th gen su-34 and can't produce more than a couple su-57 ( and they sill have the wrong engine). The only thing that seems modern is the S-400 truimf, but it's struggling againist Bayraktar drones, so how effective would it actually be againist an F-35? How long before NATO develops a new SAM system with next gen data-link, electronic warfare capabilities and lasers that will stop/destroy every Russian flying asset? Let's not forget the actual strongest weapon NATO has: OPEN MARKET AND FREE TRADE!! Meanwhile the sanctionned Russia might collapse in 2 years for banckrupcy accroding to YALE!!

    • @@mrmacias4217 yeah the change of doctrine and I hope they restructure their military and train All their branches on Combined Arms. From what we see in Ukraine the branches of the Russian Arm Forces are having a bad time working together coupled with vehicles that date to the soviet era that lack the necessary Protection and modern weaponry also the the horrible mobility of the Soviet Vehicles ( Engine horsepower, Reverse Speed and not able to turn on the spot). I hope also they fix their Logistics in all of their Battalion Tactical Group (BTG) and re equip their soldiers with the necessary equipment and modern weapons. Oh yeah this all can be done if the Corruption in the Russian Defence industry, Government and Arm Forces is stop and not use as a weapon by the government to ensure the people who is involved stay loyal to the government

  • Ukraine should not be afraid or Never been afraid of these Old Soviet Era T72 Tanks in which Belarus have and upgrade to a T72EM2 Tanks . Because Ukraine still have numbers of these T72 Tanks on their arsenal and while others have been captured and destroyed by there forces since the start of the invasion . Beside Ukraine knew exactly the Strength and Weakness of the Old Soviet era T72 Tanks .

  • Question: If an opposing force shot a tanks ERA with .50 cal machine gun fire, would it explode all of the ERA and thus open it to attack by less effective RPG ? A complex and dangerous maneuver to be sure.....but....would it work? And, would the exploding ERA damage or destroy the tank's external sights and sensors?

    @rael5469@rael5469 Жыл бұрын
    • It may be work on older ERA but modern ERA not gonna explode by small caliber round

      @danawr45@danawr45 Жыл бұрын
    • ERA doesn't chain explode. You can indeed damage block by constant fire from heavy machine gun or autocannon in order to open a space to passive armour of vehicle, but you would be spotted right away and put yourself in danger

    • I'm not good at explain it myself but this guy made a very good vid about that so here the link: kzhead.info/sun/nqdpl8pvpomIiI0/bejne.html In short there are few reason why they won't explode: - The explosive contents in ERA only explode under extreme pressure such as being hit with >100mm apfsds that usually travel at >1500m/s or the "jet" of HEAT. Even autocannons round do not have that much pressure the detonate ERA. - To be effective against kinetic energy projectiles, ERA must use much thicker and heavier plates. Those plates are too thick to be penetrated by HMG fire such as .50 or 12.7mm.

      @SaltyMartian@SaltyMartian Жыл бұрын
    • I think ERA's plating in generally meant to prevent damage by small arms fire, including .50 cal, but the explosive could also be designed to not go off unless enough pressure or energy was applied to make it go off, which it probably is. The E in ERA is much more resilient than something like tannerite. That said maybe an autocannon could physically damage the ERA enough to reduce effectiveness.

      @barrag3463@barrag3463 Жыл бұрын
    • era is not going to explode just because it got hit by some "small" bullets or fragments. If it would be possible either nobody would use it or everybody would have 50cal mounted on their tanks to defeat era
