GTA 5 Next-Gen Update - Ray Tracing ON vs OFF Comparison (PS5)
GTA 5 Next-Gen Update - Ray Tracing Comparison (featuring Ray-Traced Shadows)➡️️ Full ON/OFF Playlist: • Minecraft RTX - Ray Tr...
Comparison used the performance and fidelity settings.
Recorced and uploaded in 4K.
Even with real-time ray tracing still being in its infancy, I believe RT will become more important with current and coming generation hardware, so I created this channel with the intention of covering ray-traced games. There are plenty of channels doing mainly performance comparisons, my intention is to focus on the visual aspect and make the differences more obvious through my videos. If you want to see more on ray-traced games in the future, subscribe ! 🔔 / @raytracingrevolution

The moonlight outside the city is also casting ray traced shadows. Nothing special but maybe it's worth to mention.
Watch Dogs Legion and Spider Man Remastered (which has a 60fps RT mode IIRC) have shown that ray traced reflections in a big city can work really well. Why they chose to implement shadows over reflections is beyond me. It's not even like the cubemaps look *good enough*. They're completely broken in some areas.
Implementing reflections could require tinkering with material properties since the game isn't up to even 8th gen PBR standards, so they probably just took the easy route. Pretty disappointing.
GI would have been the biggest
I didn't expect much when rockstars marketing didn't even mention which RT effects would be supported, and I am still a bit let down🤥
You and me both.
Agree, still looks flat without RT local shadows and RT Global Illumination. Also, the RT Sun Shadows look low resolution with the blocky artifacts on circle shadows. Appreciate the RT On and Off comparisons as always!
They mentioned that ray tracing will be added
@@SLI732 Yeah but still it's a massive improvement over raster based shadows. Every scene shown gains breath of life with RT on. Looks more pleasing to the eye even though it is still blocky (while also raster based is blocky as well). Now what I'd like to see is rockstar releacing FULL raytracing feature to the PC version. RTS, RTR, RTGI, RT bounce light etc to the point where we are completely replacing raster lighting and reflection/refraction for ray traced lighting and reflection/refraction, while also doing the same to RDR2. I would literally buy RTX 4080 because of it. I'm a graphics junkie I know. GTA V on next gen at least has some notable upgrades. HDR, RT shadows, 60 fps, TAA (note that TXAA is not the same as TAA) and some other minor cleanups, while I agree it should have been a free upgrade for anyone who owns GTA V, it is still notable upgrade even though we all expected much more.
@@sermerlin1 Yes, the RT in GTA 5 Next Gen Update definitely improves the lighting (no shimmering shadows), but for performance compromises on the PS5. It looks like the RT Sun Shadows are half screen resolution. I game on high-end PC as well, so an update that renders RT Sun Shadows at full screen resolution @ 4k 60fps would look amazing. I am glad we are getting more games using RT technology and look forward to games like Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition that only using ray tracing with infinite light bounce global illumination.
No Smaller Object Shadows, No Indoor Shadows. Just the sun shadows. Were Reflections just hard to implement? Even at 1080p it would've been cool.
I'm not sure how different the performance impact is between reflections and shadows. Its doable on consoles, Spiderman for example, but CDPR also adding shadows instead of reflections in 2077 makes me wonder if current gen can handle that in most open world games.
@@RayTracingRevolution Good video, dissapointing port. There will be some more on Ghostwire Tokoyo, reflections and local shadows I believe. And this one will be on PC too, that will make possibility for interesting comparision.
It's a rare opurtunity to see how RT shadows are compared against NVIDIA PCSS and AMD Soft Shadows 🏡
I didn't expect them to look so different. You wouldn't really see the effect without comparison though. At least the visual bugs are gone. Such a shame they didn't implement more RT features.
@@dnk8373 There is also an RT performance mode, so if you really want those RT shadows you can still play at 60fps with upsampled 4k. More graphics options on consoles is always a welcome thing.
So even the PS5 can't run Nvidia pcss smoothly?
@@RayTracingRevolution sorry, are you deleting my posts or its beacuse of this external link to my screenshot?
@@rafawroblewski8472 I don't delete posts unless they are insulting or flamewar bait. KZhead really doesn't like external links in my experience though.
I think the default shadows look better. The implementation of RT shadows here gives pretty noisy results, and the softness falloff is massive. The default shadows have a simulation of penumbra that looks a lot like RT, and they run better while looking better to my eye.
Hopefully Rockstar adds the full suite of RT features to PC, like reflections and global illumination.
I'm pretty sure that there are pcss (or something else) shadows in use without RT, so they get softer at the distance as well, so the difference get smaller in result. But pcss is shadow map based technic, so it will suffer from all of its usual downsides unlike RT shadows.
How does it compare to AMD CHS and NVIDIA’s PCSS? Because I remember CHS looking lower resolution for some reason, even at Very High and I was using an AMD card. And PCSS sometimes looked good, but had alot of artefacts, especially when sharp and soft shadows combined and had quite a large performance impact if I remember correctly.
GTA V: how much do you want to milk me? Rockstar: Yes
Wow... a whole lot of of nothing essentially
Nah, you just don't understand the concept.
I think light bouncing already present even with RT off thats why
RT reflections would have been a massive upgrade, considering all the windows in the city. Though its definitely easier to add RT shadows. A little disappointing
Good demonstrations but disappointed its the only rt feature. Heres hoping that the pc ver and the next GTA introduces a few more RT features.
Such an insignificant update it's like they put in the least amount of effort they could.
it does improve certain shadows though, but it would be cooler and better to have rt reflections
i wonder how it'll look with nve and quantv when it releases on pc
This game already has very good non RT shadows. Imho the shadow problem has already been solved without RT with rasterized tech like PCSS.
Can't wait to see Ghostwire: Tokyo Video. Looks like it has some nice RayTracing.
There's a slight change in the car reflection at 2:12, any idea if it's RT related?
I was looking at that too but I'm thinking it's one of the three performance modes. It probably just turns down the anti-aliasing which does change reflections but just a bit. It's already a PC feature. I've been making shadows darker and saturating GTA for a year or two since Nvidia game out with the GeForce experience filters.
but there are still cubemap reflections at store glass, car rearview mirrors. I'm not sure whether RT reflections exist or not.
The game does have pretty nice looking cube map reflections most of the time, there are other changes between the Fidelity and Performance mode that might alter the visuals besides the RT shadows.
This mode uses higher resolution cubemap
1:02 how did r* mess up rt shadows that badly loool
Do we have RT in pc? I dont have it installed right now, but i dont remember anything about ray tracing.
Maybe they will release a update later, maybe never.
no
No, also no word on whether the features of this update will make it to PC.
Not all things are shadowed with RT on.. how useful.
not all elements are shadowed with RT on.. how useful.
Raytracing on looks like Shadows on low
2:29 I cant say I enjoy the sharpening they applied to the next gen version
It runs at 1800p I think
You are probably the type of guy that sets 10x motion blur and DOF too for maximum soap opera effect... lmao
Is this a mod or is this a new feature?
i wonder if they will implement them to pc some day
They (console Users) have paid extra money for RT. So...I don't know if I would pay extra money for an old game for low ray tracing
It's "realistic" but the drop off in shadow blurriness isn't. Like, this RT just acts like all objects turn into some permeable mist after three feet. Egh.
It almost feels like the suns angular size is too big, shadow definition doesn't drop off as quickly in 2077.
So sun shadows are the only effects that are raytraced in the update? I mean they look OK, I wonder if they'll port it to PC... And don't charge extra for it, but knowing Rockstar, they either won't port it or won't make it free
i wish that the reflections were ray traced.
Nobodys realizing that the game is coming to an end, rockstar just updating the final things
This video is really hard to make
Why does it look better when it's off in some scenes 🥴
its just soft shadows and sharp shadow comparison
but sun shadows is sharp in real life, why has to be blurry on games? RT off more realistic
Shadows looks pretty much the same what PC PCSS Glitches out pretty much the same but cascade quality is far better
Is there RT for RDR2 though? That's insulting.
No difference between this modes i tested on Series x performance better Resolution
Well it's better than nothing, at least RT shadows fix the broken ass rasterized shadows GTA V always had.
I am sure the next GTA series will be pure dog fart without Founders.
If you want more draw distance and lod scale on pc you can use "extreme draw distance mod". Next gen port really dissapoint.
Rockstar, добавив RTX в GTA 5, вы не сделали её красивой игрой, так как ужасные текстуры по-прежнему остались.
What I'd like to see next is GTA V and RDR2 Full RT features on PC.
This is definitely a version of ray tracing that doesn't make the game look nicer, nor does it make it look worse. It's simply a pointless update.
Theres nothing changed JUST HIGHER SHADOW RES CUZ CONSOLE SUX
Christ, the shadows are terribly denoised.
rt often looks worse
looks the same or worse wtf
What a Joke! Rockstar is doing what they always do. What was the point in the marketing this as an upgrade when it's the exact same thing with a few minor tweaks. I was expecting close to Cyberpunk level Raytracing but, You know you shouldnt expect much from Rockstar one flop after another. I just wish GTA Online would die already so we can get GTA 6 already.
okay now this is truly pointless
It is ironic that RT off looks better than RT on!
This isnt even ray tracing, just better shadow rendering... and more casted shadows jeez
Wasted indeed.
So ray tracing doesn’t work😒😒??
Sorry but no improvement right there. Pretty disappointing from rockstar
probably the worst ray-tracing implementation i've seen
this is jolke
