Fun fact: While the 'repopulating the Earth' thing sounds like a pretty sweet gig on paper, it would become disastrous in a very short time. Once you and your mate are gone, your kids will have only each other as company, dooming the human race to decline through inbreeding assuming it goes any farther at all. To actually repopulate the Earth, you'd need a minimum of twenty-five unrelated breeding pairs to have a diverse enough gene-pool to sustain itself, and that would still require careful calculation. Double that to fifty breeding pairs to start with and you'll have an easier go of it.
So how did we get here?
@@AImighty Perhaps our species was never narrowed to such extremes
@@AImighty Certainly, all living things on earth had the potential for genetic diversity, only humans reproduced by incest! Given the behavior, it was very likely so.
This story is not about repopulating the human species, but about human personalities and behavior.
@@igorbalen3389 yes but the Carol girl said they're the chosen ones to repopulate, s/he's talking about that narrative not the whole story itself

5:44 That irises painting is beautiful
As much as I agree that there is no point in following rules in a world that has no one to enforce them. Carol still has a point since it seems following the rules caused her not lose her sanity unlike our main character
This is also true in real life. Most rule breakers such as drug addicts or criminals just reach a point where they have done everything exciting and there is nothing more to live for hence lose the enthusiasim in life which end up stuck in a bottomless pit. eventually thinking of suicide and depression.. rules make us sane
@@KZhead.10a no they don't. They lived free for a few years and died when everything was done instead of living like a bot boy for a looong boring fuckin time. It's the quality that matters honey, not the quantity
@@KZhead.10a Agreed.
We evolved with rules. It is like they are already ingrained in our gens. I think some kind of functioning set of rules will help in the early post-apocalyptic years.
Unless god is real and is still watching his decisions and will judge accordingly
Carol is annoying, childish and weird, but in her own strange way she's probably fit the most to be left all alone. She already is kind of wacky, and that'll help her keep the morsel of sanity she has left.
She was nowhere near as annoying childish or weird as Phil was in the beginning 😂
@@Miss_Distress they're both childish, Carol is just goody-two-shoes childish and Tandy spoiled brat childish, but eventually they kinda mixed into the same surreal personality, just with their own quirks. Seem like fun people if they would actually exist.

The worst thing you can do to a human being is not putting them in locked bars alongside others but isolating them from everyone and everything for eternity.
You don't meet the right people...i have no problem staying alone ...in fact i actually prefer it:)
Locked bars is worse you miss out on tinder one night stands, cars, cash and other fun activities, also drugs are way more expensive inside, food tastes trash, if you want sex you have to make someone drop the soap and that i would say doesn t feel as good as normal because its way more energy consuming when you count in all the preperations.

There's a story written by M.P. Shiel in 1901 called, "The Purple Cloud.". It's basically this story. I read it in January of 2020 just before Covid hit. It's about a guy who, because of circumstances, is one of two people left alive on the entire planet. Only, the guy doesn't just blow up cars for his amusement, but entire cities. I mean, everyone else is dead, so why not, right? Also, he doesn't drive cars (remember... it's 1901), he sails ships. He's a sailor left over from the Victorian Era, and he sails all around the world, from sea port to sea port looking for other survivors. And, he doesn't meet the only other person who's alive, a woman, for twenty years. There's a whole lot more to the story, so I won't say anymore. I highly recommend reading it if you like this story.
There are people who kick sand castles and those that don't.
And "The Last Man", Mary Shelley, 1826. The last man sails to visit the great libraries, IIRC

Started this when it came out for half way thru the show but never finished it, definitely need to rewatch
If my calculations are correct, about 50 people should've survived the virus worldwide (considering that there are two in America) This would have the population of north america dying out, but Afro-Eurasia would stand a better chance 43 people would survive on that continent. And if they, just like in this movie, searched for others, they could gather. They would lack the gene pool to fully normally repopulate earth but still have a chance.
Statistics usually say around anywhere less than 10% has a chance to survive
There’s actually like a lot more people alive in America as the show continues. They meet more people, these two were just the first two characters introduced. Every season though, a character died and was replaced with a new character and so on. The show ends with them finding a huge group of underground living people (about 30 ppl) that survived the pandemic through mask. It got cancelled. But then director said he was planning for them to die later because they only survived because they didn’t get contact with the virus, and because the main character group (I think there was like 6 people at the time) is immune to the virus but had the virus in their body, the contact kills all except one. That’s just me rambling. But yeah this show is really interesting, wish it got renewed
@@oceanbell3376 Okay, with that data you should be able to recalculate. I still don't think north and south America would be able to fully repopulate but this puts both in a way better position.
There's at least 7 in America there's 7 characters on the show this is just the first episode
@intriguing Woman Not enough diversity, which increases the chance of mutations due to inbreeding. A too small amount of people would lead to Inbreeding and could mean the end of the species. The more related people are, the higher the chances of certain medical problems are, which becomes even worse given that they probably don't even have the medical skills to aid in said medical problems. When you have 10 000 people, you wouldn't have to worry about your genes becoming too similar. But at 43 that becomes a real significant problem.
As much of a introvert and much I don’t like people and socializing, I wouldn’t survive without at least a normal bit of human interaction. I would just go crazy. I think there’s a research about locking people up in a empty white room or how solitary confinement does to the human brain.
Solitary confinement os a different story altogether
Solitary confinement is different from being free and alone
There is a broad difference between locked in a square empty room loneliness and doing whatever the fuck they want loneliness.
Nah it's pretty easy for me
I wish it never got cancelled it was such a funny show and also had some touching moments, jason suideikis is great
Him and Tandys interactions were TV gold. His brother catching the virus and him refusing to let him go broke me in ways a show never has. Then the next part (without spoiling it for others) Had me crying tears of Joy at Tandy singing Kareoki ❤x
Doesn't matter how much powerful the virus is Doesn't matter how much destructive a war is Doesn't matter how much tragic an incident is THE MAIN CHARACTER NEVER DIES.

I've often wondered what I would do in a situation like that. Obviously you have to find a place to live because sooner or later power won't work due to maintenance not being done so finding a home in AZ makes sense. Then you need to figure out how to garden because even if you find canned foot, it will expire. Then you need to look for running cars, I've always thought an old fashioned Model T would be the one to get due to the hand crank and they are so easy to work on and can even run on kerosene if needed. Finally, would have to make darn sure to not do anything that could break a bone and would have to insure you brush your teeth well because no doctor/dentist.

i had lots of hopes for this series when it came out but i think they did Phils character very unlikable, i had hope he would have not just been a selfish narcissist but later show that he was better only that he didnt know how to show it as he had been alone for so long. But its clear he had always been an ass. Atleast make the guy sympathetic in some way. I kept hoping he would change and show us that he isnt really only like this. But every single time he did something super mean, dumb or weird things over and over again. It became very one dimensional very quickly. That made me lose interest really fast, the first episode was great when you felt bad for the man and was rooting for him when he found another person but as soon as other people joined the group it just became more like a bad drama
I mean, what did you expect, that the last guy alive would be someone extremely interesting and propense to altruism?
@@yasininn76 i dont know man, i just feel like they could have made him a bit more deep in character, he was just all out annoying to watch. Despite the utter fear of being alone, I think that he has all the freedom in the world.
Thats so sweet Carol 🥺
Oh my God I loved this show back in the day lmao. Phil/Tandy is stupid but it's a funny sort of stupid, and I'm assuming most of his stupidity throughout the series is a direct result of him being completely alone for over half a year. Carol, despite being disgusted by Phil/Tandy on numerous occasions, has tried her best to remain loyal to him because she firmly believes they are the only people left. Everybody else in the show is great too. Todd, Gail, and Erica are more logical compared to Phil/Tandy and Carol. and they all actually have somewhat of a plan to reestablish society, which really gives the group direction. Digging through Melissa's past in the later seasons and learning more about her condition really fixes her up, and by the end of the series she is arguably the most useful person of the bunch. And I'm not even bringing up all of the side characters, including but not limited to Pat, Phil (the other one), Lewis, Jasper, and Pamela. This show, albeit weird, was great, and it's incredibly disappointing that Fox ended up canceling it when there was many more stories to be told. All of the actors were great and it truly felt like they were becoming the characters.

Tuscon is probably one of the WORST places to live. Why try to farm in a desert when you have no other humans to help you? Why not live in California with it's varied climate, loads of natural resources, and miles of farmland and orchards?
Yes. Go to the state with fires and earthquakes
@@NoName-sp5dp I lived within 30 minutes drive of the San Andreas Fault Line most of my life. I have only had ONE earthquake of note that was "scary" and it was the Loma Prieta in 1989. It had no affect to me or my family other than loss of electricity for a few days. Not something I would worry about in this movie since electricity would be out anyways as systems shut down due to lack of people to run them. As for the fires, they are a natural process that is being held back by humans. This is accumulating an unnatural amount of debris and brush that makes these fires worse than they naturally would be. Many California plants actually rely upon these fires to propagate. After the first "wild" fire went through most of California, I would expect the state to be much safer. Since the character seems to go through the various states, this could happen while he is no where near California and be over or nearly over by the time he arrives. It is VERY rare for the farmland and orchard areas to catch fire anyways since they are kept clear of debris. If a fire did start, it would be noticeable for quite a distance since most farmland is on flat land with good visibility all around. I would expect he would choose a good location that he could maintain and expand in anticipation of people showing up. A map of California would readily tell you that near Visalia would be a good area for farms and fresh water from the Sierra Nevada. Major roads travel from Visalia to Morro Bay if you want a good route to the sea.

I certainly hope if there’s ever a last man on earth, he’s an educated one who won’t generate so much waste it’s a little time and will learn how to be self-reliant at least.
and if theres ever a last woman in earth, hopefully she aint nagging about every single thing and learn to live life a little. both of them are two extremes, not just the guy. They're kinda perfect together since the girl can make the man more healthy and not be a wasteful human being, while the guy can make the woman live life and have fun in this grim scenario more instead of following everything according to what society says.
If he’s the last human, what does it matter. Stupid comment.
