  • The legend of the mysterious crab spread swiftly among the crustaceans of the shoreline. It became a tale whispered among crabs huddling in their sandy burrows, passed down from generation to generation. The brave act of protecting the vulnerable soft-shell crab against the menacing stingray ignited a spark of resilience and unity among the crab community. In the days that followed, the once-solitary crabs began to form alliances, recognizing the strength in numbers. They learned from the mysterious crab's example, understanding that by standing together, they could face any challenge that came their way. As time passed, the memory of the heroic crab persisted, its legend growing with each retelling. It became a symbol of courage, determination, and the power of solidarity. Crabs from far and wide looked to the tale of the legendary crab for inspiration and guidance in their own struggles. Through unity and perseverance, the crab community flourished, thriving in the face of adversity. And though the mysterious crab may have vanished back into the depths from whence it came, its legacy lived on in the hearts and minds of every crab along the shore.

    • The logic for it is sound: all crabs as they grow need to shed their shells to grow a bigger one beneath it. This time you are the hard shelled one but next week after you shed your own shell you need those neighbours to protect you so if you protect them now they will have your back later. For reciprocity to happen it is required that individuals are able to identify each other and penalize those that do not reciprocate, and I don't think this is the case. The other alternative, altruism, should only happen when close kin, since they share most genes.

      @ronin1648@ronin164810 ай бұрын
    • @@ronin1648 That wouldn't be a stable evolutionary strategy, if the crab passes on that trait to his offspring and his offspring pass that on to theirs eventually the crabs that don't protect would outnumber the ones who do. The crabs who do protect would find their numbers diminishing as more and more crabs seem to not care about protecting one another. Soon enough there are no crabs willing to protect each other - the ones who did have since died. That leads to extinction or a servere drop off in population. Doing what you suggest only leads to small short term gain but dooms their species.
