UNICAT Expedition Vehicle: Off-road capability
How much off-road capability is necessary for a expedition vehicle ?
For us at UNICAT , a expedition vehicle is more a tool than a toy and it´s purpose is to bring the owners to the nicest and most remote places on our planet and to provide shelter, comfort and safety while driving or while standing somewhere.
Of course, without a certain offroad capability, it would not be a expedition vehicle but how extreme do you want to go and what do you have to give up for that.
Many people think that if they choose a chassis that is well known for it´s off-road capability, ( like the Unimog or other mainly military vehicles ), they believe that with that decision, the chapter offroad capability is covered and can be closed.
But then, as comfort and range is also important, they want to put a too long, too high and to heavy body on that chassis.
But if you do that, you loose a lot or all of the offroad capabilities that chassis has promised.
Therefore, it is important to have a clear view what level of comfort you want, how much water and fuel you want to carry, what areas you want to travel ( if not all ) and if you have personal limits of how long, wide etc. the vehicle shall be.
Once you know what you want beside off-road capability and driving comfort, you can choose the appropriate chassis.
Depending on body Length and weight you can decide for a 4x4, 6x6 or 8x8, the size of the drivers cab and the drive train.
When we made the video about the technical details and the interior of the MD77, we also took some shots about driving this vehicle.
We want to show you this video which takes about 13 minutes as a example how easy handling, comfort and offroad capability can be combined.
The chassis is MAN TGS 6x6 with 4,5 + 1,4 m wheelbase, 16.00 R 20 tires and 540 hp engine.

This video series is amazing... Answering every question I ever had about these amazing trucks.
Wonderful. Loving this series and the livestreams, so detailed.
These amazing machines, have to be some of the COOLEST THINGS YOU CAN EVER BUY!
Finally! A video showing how these amazing trucks work from behind the wheel.

I love so much your Ev !! And I love so much this series!! Plese keep it up ! Thanks to sharing! Greetings from New Zealand
Thank you for demonstrating the off-road capability. That's important to see how this overlanding rig can perform
Thomas your designs are incredible
Marvellous engineering‼️
Super video!
This Expedition Vehicle is amazing. In the USA, there are many BLM and National Forest trails/roads that are tight, steep, curvy, and lined with trees. Jeep Rubicon Wranglers and Toyota 4Runners dominate the off-road driving. It looks like your Expedition Vehicle has the same elaborate suspension as the Jeep Rubicon and more than enough ground clearance to tackle these USA trails. If your Expedition Vehicles can traverse these USA trails (such as Imogene Pass in Colorado), it would be a stunning achievement by your design team. Any videos of this kind? Safe Travels!
Felicitaciones por el video informativo,es una gran obra de arte sobre ruedas. Gracias 🇨🇴.
Thanks so much
Great Live! Definitely waiting for the roomtour of your truck, Thomas. Would love to see it from the exterior and interior!

One of my dream cars is a unilateral expedition truck, I need it in east and central Africa
What a nice truck. Nice technique. Did you see the processing of the dashboard? Looks fantastic. Thank you for the explanation of the gear and motor. Now we have to win in the lottery and then we can order one of your wonderful trucks. But I think the wait is over a year for the built.
The uplift of the body is amazing, ….
wow....very informative video. excellent work
Thank you
Awesome vehicle. That last turn that he did, I thought it might tip over, but sure enough, it stayed true. I wonder what the safety and rollover stats are on this vehicle. Not that I plan to do any Tokyo drift with it, Although... - Seriously, Unicat is actually what I would be looking for as a live-in off-the-grid. The power and ruggedness. I especially liked the one with a garage that could fit two e-bikes and a Polaris side-by-side.
wow! I need one of those in Chile!
Gorgeous ✅
I want this for Christmas. Make it so.
Driving this giant looks so easy. Incredible.

I just found a use for the internet with these videos.
13:13 damn youre a really good driver
Wow 👍👍👍
Habt ihr schon mal einen Aufbau für einen MAN SX 32.440 8×8 (X45) gemacht?
So you mean that I cannot change gear lock settings while the truck is moving?
81: I AM God convinced when taking big trucks or off road gearing is every thing. I Want a 3speed gear box, for 1-7 sand, 1-7dirt/mud & 1-7 street for best mpg. on street.
The pride of German industry .. If I have one like it I would have turned around the world
How well do the longer vehicles handle deep mud and water?
Really like the vehicles you have made and provided for your customers., But been a plant fitter and HGV driver. I'm not a fan of computers and electronics out in Field.....I'd be more comfortable with leavers and valves, less to go wrong. Also IV driven off road with manual and automatic gearboxes, I'd always go for manual gearbox.
There is no problem, as we always try to satisfy the wishes of our customers, when we do yours, we will do it all manually 😜😜
Would be awesome to have a hammock mount on the top and be able to step on the solar panels as a deck.
The video I was expecting. Bravo!!!!!

@@UNICATexpeditionvehicles I've subscribed already. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Pretty amazing that you had enough traction on the reverse uphill, to actually reverse uphill. 12:02 - Skilled drivers tend to prefer handbrake control over Hillholder Button or rear differential slipbrake.. or whats the idea here on Man truck?
MAN has a button to hold the truck braked, depending on who is using it and the conditions. On a slight climb or descent the button is handy, but if you are in extreme conditions, the handbrake is more reliable.
Thank You... UNICAT must be in the Rolls Royce range as there's few expedition videos online, it looks comfortable. Take a drive from Germany to Mongolia

What if it breaks somewhere in the sticks?
Thanks - very informative. Depending on the customer's customization, how long does it - on average - take to build this vehicle?
On average 2 years, don't forget to subscribe to our channel and turn on notifications
e un grande si vede che oltre ad essere un imprenditore fa il suo lavoro con amore e passione oltre che la Qualità ed efficienza ❤️👍
The outside looks like World War II, the inside looks like super high tech. Great combination.
could put subtitles in Spanish. please thank you
Combien coûte ce magnifique camping car en version blindé de grand luxe ?👍🎩🎩🎩
On these🤔, it would be better if it is a push button select than knob select.🤓👍
Did this TGS come with auto box as standard or did you retrofit it?
Hello Baron von Teuchter, on the TGS, you have the choice of manual transmission or automatic shifting, which still is a normal transmission with a clutch, but operated by a computer. The automatic operated transmission is appr. 2.000 more than the manual transmission. A full automatic transmission would need to be retrofitted, depending on hp and weight, the cost will be in a range of 50-60.000 Euro
UNICAT Expedition Vehicles awesome, thank you. I wonder if my wife will let me sell the house and buy an md77? 🤔
@@baronvonteuchter1412 We have many customers who have sold the house and company and live on our vehicle 365 days a year around the world.
What a monster
Are these legal in canada ?
You must be confidend to stand on the outside of the corner, when this monster gives a go and seems to flip over.
On the truck I have nothing to say but one thing, if all that electronics went haywire while I am in the middle of nowhere who saves me, but above all how much it would cost me to have it repaired, as long as there is someone who knows how to do it!
the electronics on board do not affect the operation of the vehicle. In any case, each vehicle is built on specific customer requests, so if you don't want them in yours, we don't put them in.
Seems complicated. But nice truck.
How easy or hard is it to access the engine for maintenance and repair on a MAN truck.
Simple enough, just disconnect the transition between drive cab and body, 10 minutes.
What do you do if you get one of those trucks stuck ?? Getting out would be impressive. What is that ?? 25 tons of vehicle ??
What you do is wait for vehicle big enough to tow you out. In developing countries, that could be a looong wait. I read about someone in a Unimog expedition vehicle in Africa who had to wait three days (!) for a suitable tow vehicle to arrive.
Hi Graeme, the simple answer is - it depends on the specific circumstances. It can be rearly hard and take days to get out, so the best is not to get in, or at least not to get in too deep. Stopping and thinking what will be the next step is the best advice I can give, instead of turning the wheels and getting deeper and deeper ….
@@UNICATexpeditionvehicles I guess you could think of it this way: I'm not strong enough to lift a Suzuki Jimney out of a hole if it gets stuck, so the difference between 1.5 tons of stuck vehicle and 25 tons of stuck vehicle is largely technical.
How much for this truck now
Nice.. it's about MAN technology
You have to have a degree in quantum physics or rocket science to operate this thing!
😂
Is that the md77h?
Yes
There was so much time spent saying what we shouldn't do on long descents but if he ever got around to telling us what we should do, i didn't notice. Does this vehicle have J-breaks, or is there some other solution?
Hi Ron, On a long decent, you need to go down in a low gear so that the engine brake - and if you have - the retarder can maintain the speed you want to go down. The service brake should only be used occasionallly for adjustments of speed, otherwise, it will overheat and fail quickly. That´s something you learn when you make a commercial truck drivers licence. I think it´s great that in the U.S., you can drive a heavy truck with a B licence if it´s a RV, but in your own interest, I recommend to learn how to drive and operate a commercial truck.

The interior looks old and outdated. This is how Swedish trucks used to look back in 1995. What is that bulky 1990s television thing doing in the middle of the dashboard? Why not replace it with a nice flatscreen? And why are there 200 buttons in the console?
Is it a spaceship or an lorry :) :) :)
It's a house on wheels 😜
dommage pas en allemand
I'm sorry, but many speak it in the world, our German ... a little less 😜😜

So, you show the vehicle going through a swamp, and I click on it, and all you do is go once around the parking lot. It's not a SHERP, and it's not much of a RV for luxury...more utilitarian look, for hydro workers. For serious expedition, I rather take a SHERP anyday (carries 8 people)....crosses lakes, goes where your vehicle couldn't dream of. It looks like your trying to offroad with a RV with a converted motorhome. If you want to get there, fly in, or SHERP there. The Unicat will not handle sloped shorelines along rivers without rolling over (high cener of gravity). It won't do the Rubicon trail. It's designed for the right terrain, not any terrain, which an expedition vehilce might be faced with...A SHERP CAN go over anything, land or water. At $115k, far cheaper. First rule, never go alone....so 2 SHERPS is cheaper then 1 Unicat, and you will get stuck with the Unicat, and CAA will not be able to help you.
Your comment is a prime example why the whole world is laughing at and looking down on muricans. What an idiot.
a ugly thing a sherp were do you sleep on a airbed
