One of the largest private collections in Greycott, this library houses ancient tomes as well as newly published books by local authors. Topics range from the arcane to the history of the city and its surrounds. There is also an extensive catalogue of private letters and family records that go back many generations. This library is a place for quiet research and reflection.

    • In my library they just give us a random book which is mostly from the same author (One time I got the same book 5 times lol) every week and we have to finish reading it in one week and submit it the next week and get a 'new' book. Istg we all get pretty bored and we don't even read it and return it as it is because either we've already read it or we need to catch up on our school syllabus : )

I have no meaning, I'd be better off dead, I receive no support, and am rotting away inside a dire council flat where I live alone. Reading the library books that took courage to go and pick up to borrow, I sit here, this morning with a cup of coffee, pretending that I am a successful academic, living a luxurious life, and thanks to uploads like yours, it's that little bit easier. Thank you.

    • I hope at least a couple of those things have improved for you over the year since you wrote this comment. I know it probably doesn't feel like it, but none of the problems you mentioned are or need to be permanent states (although the chronic issues may hang around, depending on what they are), so the odds that things will look up are extremely good. It's also pretty definite that you do have meaning, and you just haven't managed to see it yet. Please do keep your eyes open. Incidentally, if you're up to it and feel the need to get out of your flat, libraries always seem to be looking for volunteers, and it's usually for jobs like cleaning or reshelving books, where you wouldn't need to talk to visitors. You might hear of a job opening or make a new friend that way, and at the very least, it would be something to do.

I begin to be a bit old now (which is not a problem 😄) and this reminded me of when I was a pupil and I was taught how to write : our teacher, forced us to use a real steel pen and an inkwell. In order to write the letters correctly. He was right btw... I recently found my old steel pen and began to write again with it and I felt a HUGE pleasure doing so. It's both cool, soothing and brings peace, because one has to think of words before putting them on the paper. The pace of thoughts has to be slowed down. Really relaxing. So, yes : is IS calming. :) (Sorry for english : not my first language)

    • Rosie, when I was that age, I *couldn't* study in silence. I *had to* have some kind of noise that I controlled in order to concentrate. It has to do more with being able to control it than with the decibels. If there were even quiet little noises, like this place here ⬆, and I didn't know what it was, I was jolted out of a flow state and needed several minutes to calm down. I have an exaggerated startle reflex due to trauma. My teachers just thot I was ditzy or lazy and punished me. I'm still this way now, in my 50's, only more so. This is why noise-cancelling headphones and earbuds are a godsend. If the library had some noise-cancelling headphones at desks, or white-noise machines, this might actually help some people.

    • @@cass8446 Haha, yeah, as if group study should be totally silent, as if you were mimes. I mean, how the heck can you mime math stuff? LOL! X-D Literature is another thing altogether. If you were to mime a story, it would simply turn into a game of charades, and everyone would end up laughing, making more noise than if you were talking in low voices. And believe it or not, I'm 40. Some of my fellow adults seem to have sticks up their rears. Ironically, many of the teens that frequent my local library actually do crack open the books and are quieter than some of the adults that come in. *rolls eyes* Some adults don't know the meaning of "take phone calls outside!" or "use earbuds/headphones when on your electronic devices."

  • The library is dark, with deep brown wood and two levels, one window lighting the large room and peering out into the heavy yet comforting rain. Plants linger on each desk, some trailing the shelves with tender strokes. There’s only one wall that’s not full of books, and it’s crisscrossed with sections that are full of firewood. The carpet shifts under my feet as I pace, occasionally stopping to stand by one of the many chairs arranged around small circular tables. Sketches hang on the walls, as do certain pages from books encased in thin frames, and a small chandelier hangs from the ceiling, the flames of the candles it carries flickering subtlety. It’s so completely different from every other room in the palace that when I first walked in, I felt like I’d stepped into another world entirely. The soft sounds of paper rustling, quills scratching, and books being re-shelved in the distant corners of the room are soothing, and they help me think. -excerpt from my novel inspired by this video ;)

    • Fun fact! If you haven't checked out a book, the best thing you can do is leave it out or return it to one of the designated carts, rather than it's place on the shelf. The librarians will note this, and it shows just how much use the library is getting and what books they should keep in circulation. (This applies to public libraries in America, not sure if libraries are run differently elsewhere and schools/universities may have different rules.)

      @luxxlillian@luxxlillian6 жыл бұрын
    • Ours never had carts, but it did have a very unhappy librarian. :I

      @chungusbooper@chungusbooper6 жыл бұрын
    • I worked in the circulation department of my university for a few years, and we also did this process. We also had to look through the shelves section by section for any books that were out of place, because people often reshelved them in the wrong place. If we found one that had been reshelved incorrectly, we also took note of it being used. So technically we still marked those incorrectly reshelved books as we did the ones found on a table, but it is MUCH easier for us librarians if you leave it out. Checking each section is incredibly tedious and mindnumbing. So this is great advice. Please leave the books out where we can pick them up and note them with ease. :)

  • The library smelled like old paper and books with a hint of fire ash. It was raining outside and as I ran in, I was pleasantly surprised by the warmth of the fire. The windows were dark and the only sounds I could hear was the wet rain and the crackling fire. "Mrs.Brown?" I shouted. Mrs.Brown was the librarian who worked here but there was no response. "Mrs.Brown" I repeated but again, no response. I brushed it off and thought perhaps she was somewhere in the back. I sat in one of the large wooden chairs with a soft velvet cushion I felt myself slowly relax against the comfort the chair provided me. I took out my book and began to read when I suddenly heard a noise. I ignored it at first but then I heard it again. I stood up and looked around. The glass doors of the library provided a clear view of outside where there were no cars and just loud, heavy, rain. Then I heard the noise again. It was like a scratch against wood, Like someone trying to pry something open. My heart began to beat faster now but I couldn't tell where the noise was coming from. Several minutes passed till the noise came again. It was clear now, like the sound of pounding on wood. The rain had gotten so quiet that it was just a gentle sound in the back of my many thoughts. I walked toward one of the tall book cases and with all the strength I had..... I pushed it. The noise was louder now and I knew I had gotten closer. I knelt down onto my knees and examined the wall behind the book case. Thats when I saw it A small door. WOW THANKS SM FOR ALL THE SUPPORT! HERES A SMALL SECOND PART ♥️ What would you do if you found a way to escape this dimension. I know it's a stupid question. One I never thought I would have to answer until I found myself staring at small door that only a toddler could pass through. The rain was still coming down and I could hear the sound of each small droplet as they pinged against the library walls. This place was almost like a second home to me. I knew every coroner, twist and turn and even where certain books were kept on the shelves. I came here nearly every day after school and Mrs.Brown would always smile at me. But I had never seen this before. The small door seemed to be the color of dark wood with a shiny golden knob. On the wooden door there also appeared to be the engraving of some planet. Whoever had engraved the planet into the wood must have been a talented artist for the planet to have such small and beautiful details. Suddenly a sound ripped me away from my thoughts on the door. The sound that had started it all. From behind the door I could hear what seemed to be finger nails scratching and pounding against the wood. It had gradually gotten a bit louder but I still had to somewhat strain my ears to listen. Whatever was behind that door was trying desperately to get out. Perhaps it's just an animal. Some sane part in my head was thinking up of a million different normal reasons why there was an odd door in a library. Maybe Mrs.Brown stores books back there. Perhaps it's a play room for little kids. What if a cat just wandered in on accident. What if the reason wasn't normal at all? I couldn't deny that a small part of me hoped the reason was nothing ordinary. My whole felt completely normal and ordinary. Maybe that's why I like books so much, they tell stories of lives that are interesting and full of mystery and magic. The most mystery I had in my life was what I would eat for dinner. If this was a book what would the main character do? I slowly took in a deep breath and extended my hand to the knob. I was still lent on the floor sitting like a small child during story hour. I turned the golden knob which was surprisingly cold and opened the door. Do you remember what I asked you in the beginning? The question nobody would ever need the answer to. What would you do if you found a way to escape this dimension? I need the answer now.

  • That picture brings so much nostalgic... Imagine you close your eyes for ten seconds and shortly you start hearing rain sounds and you open your eyes. You are outside in a forest where it's not sunny or dark just the rain, weak wind and the clouds are pure greyish white, you wandere around try to find people but there is no one near you. You're walking a path that sort of leads somewhere, after several minutes that felt like hours you found a very tall building that looks like a magic library you walk in and feel more warm, there is no one there and all you hear is raining. You choose to close the door and hear how the water drops on the windows, you walk upstairs and see this. You feel so amazed how this happened and you start exploring the place, on the top floor there is a roof that has a cealingdoor, you open it and the rain pours on you heavily but you climb through it and see the view. It's only trees in there, you are in middle of no where and start to feel uncomfortable, you want to get out of there and you think "Is this a freaking dream?!" You slap your face multiple times but no, it' not a dream. You start to give up and get on your knees. You look up in the beautiful grey sky where rain is pouring your face, you are wet and get back in the library, you go back down and look out of the window thinking "How did I even get here?" You get a random book and the name is magic for beginners, you search through pages and pages trying to find a some sort of thing that will get you out of there. You searched for hours and hours but no, there is no hope you feel so sad and it feels like hours have been passed but the light hasn't changed a bit, you go on the roof slowly and say "This is it, everyone has died or something, I can't stand this loneliness. I will jump down and get out of here." You jumped and closed your eyes, you don't feel any pain or blackout, you open your eyes slowly and wake up on a warm saturday morning where the sunlight breezes through the curtains straight in your eyes.

  • When I was a kid, the whole family would go to local libraries to find information for my sister's Illinois history projects. I can remember going into corners of basements and it was so quiet the silence literally had almost the seashell-to-the-ear effect. I tried regaining the same experience in my late 20s but the libraries have become almost coffee houses and people go there to almost just hangout. There is no enforced quiet rule anymore it seems.
