PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING!! I admit I abused this machine before conducting a test that was to the specification limit first. The reason is I'm used to industrial machines that have a width limit which also changes with differnt thicknessses. so 1mm thick steel at 305mm width (8") is the limit but in theory that means it should also do 3mm at 30mm width..... I was wrong. The blade cutting angle is also something I should have taken note of as thicker material requires a steeper angled blade. The main point I wanted to make is to not use this machine past its recommended material thickness and that it has built in limit features such as the small handle to make sure you don't over do it. Thanless your a tool abuser like me and then you'll waste your money and time. I understand that the sensible people amung us will rate their machine because they use it responsibly. However for the heavy handed few I recomend investing in a heavier duty or self build version that can be easily fixed if broken. Please speak nicely to one another and that everyones points and perspectives are vallid. Cheers J

No, the the thickness is defined by the tooling. To be fair that is perhaps the most feeble of the 3 in 1 machines and some of the parts look cheaper than other suppliers send with theirs. Backstop is useless, better to make one from 8020 profile and include a hinged flip stop, so if you have any return bends, it doesn't foul on the fixed stop. Top tip when folding metal slip a piece of polythene between the V and the material, it will reduce if not eliminate any marks from the V block. For small shops with limited space they are an invaluable addition.
shame we didn't get to see how it handled the appropriate thicknesses of steel before you tried the 3mm!

I bought one of these about 15 years ago for £20 from a guy that almost never used it. It continues to give me great service for the kind of work I do in light sheet materials [mainly sub 20 thou spring steel]. Your treatment of this machine reminds me of the pointless piano smashing competitions we used to see at village fairs. Not exactly a fair review ......

@@joshuadelisle I would also add that the blade has held up very well over the years without re-grinding and will stilll trim a sheet of paper or foil very cleanly. Best 20 quid I ever spent
it's been bugging me so I just nipped out to the workshop and had a look at mine - the guillotine is 14 " [realistically 12 inch] and the end plates, actuating lever arm and the platten are all milled/ machined from 1 inch or 3/4 steel plate - I guess they don't make them like they used to. The answer might be to look out for one that is 30 or so, years old as this one most likely is. Sadly no makers mark on it - I guess it was a generic design decades old

I looked at those things for years wondering if I should .. glad I didn’t . .. I bought a Gabro box pan folder and a gabro shear instead .(cuts 3mm endlessly ;) you can literally cut a as long a sheet as you can buy ) Which I highly recommend. I eventually sold my box pan , was an Awsum very versatile machine tho . And almost wish I hadn’t sold it . But got a pneumatic press brake now and manual Ketona . But still things I could do on the gabro they won’t do 🙈🙄🤷♀️. .. great video as you did exactly what I would have done 🤣🤣 find it’s limits followed by huge crack 👌

They call them a notcher guillotine . I started with a 2mt Which is great for thinner stuff but the 3mt or 4mt is what your after ;) I’ve no idea why nobody else made a hand operated shear like them , removes a strip like those pneumatic hand shears ,, but it does it way better . . It’s genius , takes a bit of practice to cut as good a straight line as a propper guilotine . But like I said you want a 2.5m long strip of 3mm steel .. nothing else would do that that you can fit in it’s footprint 🐾
Welding that cast steel bed, you'd be better using a 316L stick, after prep. Works well, no preheat required on something that small. I've got one of those folders, & found it to be useful for me (hobbyist, now, Boilermaker retired). The backstop is useless & unusable, I have to get really creative if I want one. I am amazed it managed to bend 3mm steel so well. I have cut 0.5mm stainless on my 600mm machine. It requires careful setting up or it just folds it rather than cut it.
I'm kind of disappointed that you broke the "sheet metal" shear by abusing it past its design limits. Those 3-in-1s are made for shearing and forming sheet stock like box or duct metal, not for forming thick bar stock. You can most likely braze the crack using silicone bronze. You should disassemble it first so you can get enough heat on it with a good oxy/ace torch or TIG rig. This kind of repair is often sturdier than the original metal. Cool it slowly to avoid stress around the weld. Vevor does sell a line of killer shears designed to cut up to 1/4" mild steel flat bar. The shear has a 1 M handle so there is plenty of leverage for the thick stuff. The shears come in 12", 8", & 5" and the 8" shear is on sale right now for $84 US. One other thing, I can't see it very well but I think the cutting angle on the blade is pretty shallow and might have cut the 3mm steel if there was more angle on the blade. I have a bunch of Vevor tools and swear by them. Love your videos. Keep up the good work.
I can't believe how stout the Beverly shear knockoff is from Vevor. I've run mine hard over the last few months, and it's good as new still. Excellent tools for the money.

I was thinking of buying one of these as they would be very handy doing what you made me think it could be worth buying as using the correct tolerance would be jus fine, im a machine tool fitter retied now due to an MBA I remember getting called out to Electrolux to look at their guillotine as something was wrong with it, it was full size max 3mm when I got there the left side of the thing was broken clean through I said how did that happen, got the I don't know we were just cutting some sheet I went around the back of the machine looked at their off cut and they were cutting 6mm plate, lol we stripped it down and had the 2 broken side and took them to a welder and was bronzed back together and to this day 20 years later, its still cutting just fine, so I would suggest go go have it bronzed back together by a good boiler maker I have no doubt you could do the same and will be fine

I bought the Katsu brand version from Aim Tools when they had a sale and paid £200, brand new, boxed, delivered. I did have a requirement to fold titanium sheet which I thought may strain the machine, so I bought a Smithfield 400mm hydraulic brake rated for 5mm steel. The Smithfield hydraulic brakes is made in the UK and is lightyears better in every way than the imported machines!

I like that this was a (partial) destruction test. People who need the machine within it's normal tolerances could look at this and make the best decision they can within their budget, and people who want to go beyond the tolerance can choose to look for a stronger machine at a higher price point. By my perception this is a very honest and accurate review. It will help anyone who listens to the good advice it offers. If you ignore the good advice and still order the product hoping it will support you beyond tolerance, then may your deity of choice help you because you will be dissapointed.

@@joshuadelisle no really, test to destruction. It’s the only truly rigorous test. The video length was fine for me. I will never need to buy that tool or modify it as a dabbling hobbyist, but it still gave me valuable information that I can apply to other things. It tells me important information that I can adapt to my own particular needs. Thanks!
I do wish we could have seen how well it worked within its specified limits :-/ Destructive testing after that would be great, but as it is, I don’t know if it would actually work well with 1mm. Still a great review and vid though!

No surprise you broke it with 3mm steel. That's what, 10 gauge? I have the nice 400lb Grizzly version (much bigger) and it's only rated for 20 gauge steel. 18 gauge copper, I believe.

I let the comment stand because a much, much better device (Grizzly G4011Z) has tighter limits at 22 gauge for soft steel (finally looked it up). To be honest, we already know the limits. They are in the manual... We don't really need a video to prove that you shouldn't use it beyond the manual limit. I would prefer seeing it used per manual limits first before destroying it. I suspect it would not have lasted long even at the 1mm (18 gauge) spec in the manual.

You can repair that casting by bolting a couple of straps to to it, When I retired and closed my workshop I sold my six foot guillotine to a friend who decided to place it on uneven concrete and then tried to cut some ten mm bar when the machine was only rated to 1/8 inch over six foot, he broke the thing in two on the bed. I bolted it together for him using a piece of steel ten by one inch over the length of the bed and once the blades were adjusted it worked as well as before. I recently looked at the Vevor lathes but in the end decided I was better off getting an old Myford that need some restoration, its a bit small compared to what I used to have, that weighed five tons and had a seven kilowatt motor on it but no room in my garage.
Yes I'm thinking of doing just that. I have some 10mmx50mm thick bar I could use or cut some plate out and bolt it on each face. Then I'll do a fair test.... Cheers J
Yes machine mart sell one with the Clark label, the 300mm version has a limit if 1mm so 3mm would be pushing it - then i read your comment !
I've had one of these (probably not vevor) for over 10 years, and I've bent and sheared a heap of stuff without issues. I stopped when the handle didn't want to cut / bend - which seemed like a reasonable limiting point. I've never bolted mine down, as it seems pointless for such a light duty machine. Now that I think of it, a wood chisel could be used as a high torque flat blade screwdriver - how about testing it?

Great test, to bad she broke but u can braze it back 26000 pounds of force . I am glad i saw your issue so i wont bother with that one lol
I have one of those 12" 3-in-1 machines so while I was in the shop tonight I checked it out and indeed, the cutting blade has almost no cutting angle on the blade. This works well cutting sheet metal as it leaves almost no burr on the edge but with thick metal, you need a good angle to cut through the metal. Try cutting through metal with 2 square edges. The other type of metal shear that cuts through 1/4" flat bar has a very steep angle on the blade, like scissors. One problem with more angle is that when you cut, it pulls the blade forward into the bottom blade as the blade acts as a wedge against the material. This can cause excessive wear on the bottom blade. if you wanted to cut heavier material you would need to regrind the top blade.
To bend and roll 3mm is very impressive. To do that did you use the extension arm? I need to bend 1.2mm so it gives me confidence it can do it. Extremely useful video, saves us breaking ours ❤️👍🙂

Really enjoyed the test to destruction. You need to be able to repair these machines. Bearings and handle l destroyed,but was able to replace these with a better setup. Still use it but like you the shear didn't work for me

That blade guard seems important. Imagine you are folding a small part and accidentally slip your finger under the blade. When you open the bender,say goodbye to a much loved digit or 2
That's not what it's for, it's to clamp the steel prior to shearing, if you finger was near that It would then get crushed. It's very unlikely you're hands are near the base as you need them to operate the lever. Cheers J

Hi Joshua, you didn't have the hold down for the shear fitted ! Aside from the 3 mm Thats why it broke - without the hold down the blades want to force themselves apart as the material rocks upwards and then becomes a wedge. Also just wanted to say great videos and i found you after watching the electric hoist vid recently and thought what great reviews you do. i started in an old tin stable at my parents farm and could relate to a lot of what you said / say in the videos with your journey. Do you know i bought one of those cheap electric hoists ( actually a 'used' item but never fitted or used off eBay for £25 ) it was the 125kg model and 250kg double line and it just lifted my 400kg horizontal bandsaw ! like you was interested to find its limits so had me guessing what that 1200kg version will really do. Does make you wonder how long they will last though ... all that capacity for only £125 ? Need to get setup over my cnc plasma . Amazing forge work by the way - even got the mrs to pause her video when showed her the beatles and gates you made lol and that takes a lot

Yes that hoist is awesome but heavy lifting is very very dangerous so i will not be doing a limit test on that. just the cable breaking could whip your head off at over a ton. I like having the heavy duty version for relatively light work for that reason as i can trust it a bit more. I may have have some awesome forging developments happening soon. I've been in contact with a water powered 12th century forge with old pawerhammers to use for teaching. we'll see what happens. cheers J

400 pounds is a lot for that. Here in the states we get one that is 32” wide for that kind of money.
Even on a English made larger machine is only recommended to cut 1.6 at the most. Asking for trouble cutting 3mm on most average guillotine need an industrial one that can do 6mm.
I have the same machine, they are only rated to 1mm mine does 1000mm wide. I bought it in the hope it would be usable at greater thicknesses. It struggles, I never forced mine so never broke it but anything 1mm or below is no problem lol
By all accounts I’m 6’3 and over 400lbs myself and been a metalworker all my life and can be very heavily handed myself. These machines are ok but far from great. My advice would be to bypass these and go straight for a heavier more forgiving machine

I've got one at work at dairy for making small shields for sensors etc. It's... OK for stuff like 0,5-0,75mm stainless. Shears I thought to try, but looked at the construction and decided that I'll never use them. They're also in way of more complex bends. For 4-10 grading I think I would give something like 6 or 7. I kinda dislike the rollers that teeths are quite far apart each other on one I'm using. I'm about sure they will strip some day as material seems quite rubbish. For very thin stuff it's... Ok

One reason I never bought one of these machines from anyone, is because they’re only good for very thin steel and even thinner stainless. For me, at least, that’s marginally useful. If a machine can’t do at least 16 gauge, it’s not useful enough. Of course, if he paid for this himself, he wouldn’t be trying any of this. I just don’t understand why people think they have to do this nonsense. When a machine has a rating and you stay within those specs, it will likely last forever. If you need a machine for heavier work, you pay the high price that it will be.

I use mine for aluminum and sheet metal. People need to understand the limitations of this tool. Sure any tool will break if you abuse it. If you are going to work with lager material, think about buying a bigger machine.
Would work for aircraft sheet metal.
I have a 50 quid bench-top 7" shears & a 700mm "brake" - home-built for 50p.. plus 2 bits of pipe welded together with a 2mm gap between them that does all the "rolling".. cannot think of one situation where I'd need one of these ^ for anything whatsoever regarding car bodywork anyway. It's too narrow, the brake feature hides the true angle as it is a double V & therefore unpredictable as feck & you're seldom if ever gonna be rolling anything to a fixed radius - it will almost all be compound curves that this won't do.. Let's not. :-)
Umm is it fare to the manufacture to review a product and try to make it do something it was not designed to do , manufacturers design levers long enough to exact the correct amount of force for there products, I have the greatest respect for you and your talents but this is not fare
Did you actually watch the video? He specifically states he was testing it's limits and that it would work fine for it's rated capacity.

Vevar appear to be simply buying in Chinese tools and putting their name on them. I have the exact same model as this, but mine is a Clarke.
I had one of these arrive and thought it was absolutely atrocious build quality. I asked Amazon for a refund and eventually got it even though the didn’t bother collecting it. Originally they wanted me to pay the postage???? No way was that happening. The benefit of Amazon is when a problem arises. Getting it for free may make the time it takes to make it usable worthwhile. When I find the time.
Vevor is a sham company. No support, no parts, no warranty. You are left with a heavy paper weight.

Absolutely no. I handle 0,5mm to 0,75mm thick stainless at dairy with this model and notable usually fairly narrow pieces. It's OK for that, but do not get this to strip 1mm stainless. I can guarantee that it won't work. Get ie. Makita battery shears for that. Much better investment

This is my kind of tutorial. I'm the kind of guy that takes things a bit too far. When I'm changing a fuel filter on an old ford truck I always by 2 fuel filters and an ez-out. I tighten the first fuel filter until it is tight, then I question myself. I proceed to tighten it a bit more, breaking it off. I use the ez-out to get the threaded part out. Then I put the second filter in like a normal person and It's good to go. True story. I tried to get my friends to call me overkill. They wouldn't, but it's all good. I know who I am. I am OVERKILL, let all Ford fuel filters feel my wrath. Well, half of them anyway.
ive had things made of that cheap steel before, even if it cuts 2mm sheet steel and rolls it, i wouldnt pay £400 for that, id end up breaking it. will stick to my cheap chinese hand held metal shear cutter that does the job in seconds
to be fair I use my electronic shears for thin material however for super straight cuts it would have been useful. cheers J

A fair review ,,, but it would have been fair to the machine to use it as per its stated limits a bit first ,,, would I be buying one after the review ,,, nope ,, but I wouldnt have been buying one to start with either. maybe just the job if your a model engineer working in brass , or alloy.

Good video! Bummer yours broke right away. Even if you used rated material you would immediately start to observe inconsistent results. The shear can't even cut18-20 gauge Stainless, much less bar stock. This "might" be good enough for maybe a garage "tinkerer" with some extra money to waste, but not for anything you need to be accurate at all. I erroneously talked the company I worked at into buying one of these about 10 years ago. (Different company name , same unit design but 30" wide I believe). Absolutely the worst piece of junk I ever used! I am a crusader against these over priced, completely useless boat anchors. If you even remotely expect acceptable results from it save your money, Buy a single "quality" sheet metal brake first. If you "need" a shear.. buy that second. The roller can be third if needed. I fabricate and modify equipment for a pharmaceutical company . This difference in the finished product that decent equipment makes is night and day. (This my opinion and I paid the price by using these things for almost 2 years , to state it.)
Vevor offers no support, parts or warranty. You're left with a huge paper weight. They all break.

just stupid to make a test with non adequate means. could have let it be. i am only interested to see if the product keeps its promise and if so how well.

Yeah, unless you used it within spec you can't really honestly call this a review. I mean it gave me zero useful information. Like buying a 5 ton jack and then trying to lift 15 tons with it, way outside of the realm of reality. 3x in fact. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to sit my 280lb self on a kids bike that's rated for 80 lbs Un-ironically.
