Hi. My name is Darek and in this video I'll show you how I made a Spot Welder DIY using simple tools.
The main assumption was to make this without special tools.
As you seen, mostly I used a drill and an angle grind and the end result came out really cool.
Costs:
A transformer from the scrapyard - $ 2.00
A welding cable 1 meter - $ 2.00
Connectors - $ 1.00
An aluminum square tubing - $ 4.00
Door hinges - $ 2.00
The rest of the materials I had in the workshop, but if I had to buy them, would not cost more than $ 10.00
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
$ 21.00 (my cost $ 11.00)
The welder works really, really well. After a few minutes of work, only the aluminum arms are warm. Thanks to the fact that they are made of aluminum, they quickly give off the heat and the entire transformer and the coils are cold.

  • The skill and resourcefulness of these guys is awesome. Many years ago I worked in auto salvage with a guy from eastern Europe. Some tools and many kinds of spare parts were rare there, so, like him, they learned to fabricate whatever they needed from scratch, you name it! And they did it well.

  • I worked at a body shop for many years and started my own shop about 4 years ago and I had one at my original job and also bought one for my shop now to weld on quarter panels and different sheet metal panels to have a factory look to them and have the same strength as stock. Mine I have now cost me close to 3k! It is very nice and has multiple attachments for different jobs but after seen this video I really regret clicking on it to see how I could have saved so much frikn money by not buying the one I have now!! Lol I'll make one so I don't completely burn out my other one because I use it a lot! Way cool man!! Thanx for sharing!!

  • It's nice for a change ,to see something that says do-it-yourself and not have to have a 200$ welder, 400$ metal lathe. something that you could actually do with a hacksaw, a file, and a couple of drill bits. now this is something that anybody could probably build and I praise this guy for this. it's awesome finally someone gets it. nobody else seem to get the concept, do-it-yourself.

  • Its a great looking spot welder and I'm sure it works great. I've made one myself once upon a time. I'm not really a 'brother's keeper' type, but when you use a microwave transformer like that you're bypassing the safety of the ground fault interrupt. All the electricity from the wall goes through its primary coil and returns the same amount to the wall whether you're getting shocked or not. Just be careful using this thing.

    • 5:28 thanks! Had he not done that, we would have a short circuit right?

      @trackmyactivity@trackmyactivity6 жыл бұрын
    • Should we also assume he has direct current? And the top arm is the ground? And that is why he has no risk of getting electroshocked? (If it was direct and the upper arm was not the ground, then would he have a risk of getting electroshocked?) Or is it rather the fact that there is so little voltage that in any case (DC or AC) he will not get electroshocked? Thanks for your answer!

      @trackmyactivity@trackmyactivity6 жыл бұрын
    • trackmyactivity spotweld has 1.5V cable has so little resistance. Your body has around 2k. Current will not go through your body. Always will use metal way. And yes, spotweld already itself is a short circuit and you are using heat caused by high current.

  • Interesting build. I feel like your isolation for the bottom jaw is very susceptible to breaking though, because it's jammed tight against other metal parts with sharp edges. If this failed, it could lead to a short circuit across your transformer through the frame, which could be catastrophic. I would also look at isolating the high current from the arms themselves. While you may not have enough voltage to break skin resistance, if you ever did have an accident, like grabbing it with wet hands or accidentally cut yourself while using it, your skin resistance would drop low enough for this to be really deadly.

    @arfink@arfink6 жыл бұрын
    • deadly at 1.5V AC?

      @jonharkulsykkel@jonharkulsykkel5 жыл бұрын
    • Deadly at all voltages- you must have seen cop movies where they torture a guy with cables on a car battery? Current causes burns across the skin surface, voltage irrelevant then. Since this is a metal cased (& homemade) device an extra earth should also be fitted to the casing in case of transformer breakdown, quite likely eventually in this usage scenario. Really, I like your vid and appreciate your work, but there are no safety devices at all on the input side and that's just crazy.

      @neilholmes2572@neilholmes25725 жыл бұрын
    • Save level voltages accepted to use in bathroom (shower etc) means voltage under 25VAC if I remmember, so in this case theres no risk at all. Because secondary winding is floating its harmless, even if U get huge static charge diffrence it will just add to transformer secondary and 1.5V output wont harm anyone.

      @shuashuashua1@shuashuashua15 жыл бұрын
    • hahahaha , yes agree Neil , should say them same as You do , Very clever and ingenuous , I am , also very appreciating this Vidéo , but Yes only that there should be a few safety cut-off's included , safety don't cost much more to include , and I would like to see Next Video without that music , and Even not Important You Speak in English , under technicians and help my self makers , language is not important , only hand movements is make it understandable , and if you including is safety , this should be one huge succes Video
