Crosswind Chaos & The Closest Finish Ever? | UAE Tour 2023 Highlights - Stage 1
The 2023 UAE Tour kicks off with a golden opportunity for the sprinters. The 151.5km route is as straightforward as they come, even by this race’s standards. Crosswinds may cause some panic, particularly in the final 50km as the peloton passes through the open desert on an arrow-straight super-highway. But if the bunch stays together, this is sure to be the week’s first clash between the fastmen.

Look at the crowds they love their cycling over there!
Crazy huh, you'd think that these middle-east despots who are so willing to spend millions on Pro Tour Cycling (and LIV Golf), trying to "sports-wash" their barbaric murderous image, might spend just a few more $$$$$ on providing a professional crowd at the finish.
I was going to say the same thing.
Nice story-telling in this highlights segment. Good job, Dan!
😮This stage was absolutely ABSURD and I loved it!
Great stage....the riders on the UAE team have some explaining to do at the Emir😀
Dunno how they decided that one... I'd be interested to hear about that....
Definitely. The judges need to explain how they reached their conclusion.
They should have awarded a tie. It was impossible to see.
Patrick lefevere slipped the commissaire a brown envelope. 😛
Probably because they were exactly the same, but Ewan benefit from the draft, so was easier for him; so they would award Merlier because of a stronger performance, because he was in the wind and leading for the entire sprint
@@ritrattoaziendale but races are decided by who worked the hardest. They are decided by who crosses the line first. In this case there doesn’t seem to be any difference.
That looked like a dead heat.
Thanks, Dan!
Thank you❤🌹🙏
I'm still trying to catch up on the races from the past weekend! (Thanks GCN!) These highlights will help.
There's been so much, it's hard to keep track!
Thanks again for the content
We're glad you're enjoying it!
It's really amazing how dang fast some people can go on bikes. That win at the end was certainly thrilling!
His tire was into the white line farther, the distance mm's ... the round slightly deformed, officials could zoom it. Ymmv, good racing 🍺
❤️❤️❤️
Dan, you're a great commentator! I hope the GCN/Eurosport partnership keeps you commentating all season.
If this doesn't count as a dead heat, does anything?
We're not sure how they managed to separate them!
Yet another early celebration! Ewan needs to rebuild his confidence after a bad (by his standards) 2022 season. Same for Cav. But there is a strong new generation of sprinters that are going to disrupt their plans, and that's exciting.
Brutal wind
Its ok for cav
Well he was the last person in front, so
Why don't they just have some sort of laser beam or optic curtain and the first to break the signal along it wins. No need for silly photos to decide. The laser from the top at like every 5mm increments. Receiver as a tape across the road that can detect the break in the laser beams.
is pogacar not join this tour?
Not this year, his next race is Strade Bianche!
Less clear than that Amstel Gold race 🤔
It was a dead heat, but the UCI arbitrarily decided to hand the win to a World Tour rider.
Haha Dan is so salty about Ewan not winning XD
Is he?
@@petyrkowalski9887 He apparantly couldn't grasp that the judges probably had better equipment besides that photo from far away that was shown during the broadcast...
@@devidia ok but he didnt sound “salty” he was just questioning how they called it as they did.
@@petyrkowalski9887 Not how i heard it
@@devidia That's not a "photo from far away". That's the photo finish, set up on the finish line with special cameras. If they had a better equipment, they should've set that one up there, because that's the final word on the result by law. You apparently can't grasp that if the judges had a better photo, then they should've showed that one in the broadcast. If they had one, then what's the point of not showing? People watch the broadcast to see with their own eyes who's the winner. If they wanted to be only told what happened, radio would still be flourishing.
really? a tour in the middle of a desert run by a dictatorship with no mountains anywhere but strong wind all day long? this greed in sports is a disgrace.
2 mountain stages iirc
@@Quintendejong123 thanks for the correction!
@@sepixsound Just 1 climb in those stages though but uphill finish
2 different mountains, Jebel Hafeet and Jebel Jais. The first is shorter and steeper, the second is just 5%, but goes on forever.
What a boring route...
I don't think the riders would agree with you
@@carlvanmeerbeek7327 Boring route, elements not so much.
Witnesing those echelons is a thing of beauty. But is sher hell being there and being droped.
It's great to watch, very entertaining!
