Making overly ergonomic handle for rusty file - OLD TOOL RESTORATION
I found this old rusty file for around 3 euros. It as a fair price as the file part costs easily 20 euros. It was a little quite rusty, the file was a little dull and the handle was made of cardboard for some reason.
Because the file handle the actual file is attached to, I does only allow one to use the file on one side there was no need to use straight handle which is no very comfortable . Because of this I designed a more ergonomic curved handle. On which I added a steel band with custom etched design to give it the extra style it needed. I also was orginally going to carve a checker design on the handle but as I found a piece of oak with the exact curve in the grain I wanted, that just felt like a little too much.
The steel collar was etched with electrolysis. I first used 1mm thick tape to mask my design then painted over it with just a basic primer and removed the tape to allow have only the previously taped areas to etch. You can find a lot of tutorials regarding this on the internet so I won't be writing too brief instructions for for safety reasons.
I used vinegar to remove rust from the other parts of the file and after removing the handle. I had them there overnight which felt like enough. besides rust removal the mild acid bath will also sharpen the file. This is a simple and cheap way to give your old dull files a new life.
I used the freshly sharpened file to round the the part of the handle that fits the collar. I know there would have been easier ways but I wanted to do this to test out sharpened file. Plus how cool is it that I used the file to make a handle for itself An angle grinder and belt sander to sculpt the rough shape of the rest of the handle. A flap drum was used to finish the surface for an even finish. Then the collar was glued on with epoxy and the file was hammered in the hole of the handle.

You are my favorite restoration chanel. Many channels say "restoration" even though they alter the original design
Cardboard handle: wartime restriction in using timber. Both World Wars, all combatants.
Beautiful handle, especially where the grain matches your design (or visa versa). Your use of chemistry is spot on.
Thank goodness the music went away. It's been interesting seeing how your videos have progressed throughout the years. You've definitely only improved. Favorite channel!
After all those centuries with a cardboard handle, the file deserved an ergo-masterpiece. (Did the grain really match your design, or did your design match the grain?)
Looks like he had the design made before cutting open the wewd so I’m going to say he just got lucky
i know im asking the wrong place but does anybody know a tool to log back into an instagram account? I was stupid forgot the password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
@Kace Cannon instablaster ;)
@Bishop Musa I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and Im in the hacking process atm. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Bishop Musa it worked and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy! Thanks so much, you saved my ass :D
Very nice re-usable handle; good for any file with a similar tang. A sturdy ferrule ensures that it can be tapped on and off again. Great job!
I'd be proud of that sir, very nice
Hello from Gering, Nebraska. Keep up the great work.
Wow, you got a good etch on that!
I must admit, I really like the finished handle. Reminds me of a pistol.
Nice job. That pistol grip. The rasp though is one used for softer materials such as plaster rather than wood. Wood rasp teeth are designed to break the fibres of the wood whereas the single wide-spaced ridges on this are designed to rough plane say a plaster mold or form to remove gross material. It seemed to work on the wood but I imagine it must have been heavy going!
I would prefer a traditional and thinner handle; but nice job on the pistol grip. Curios how the user likes it?
That looks real nice, not sure it would feel right to use but I’m sure you’d get used to it. Really like how the grain matched the shape 👍
Looks like all you needed was a new ferrule. I have tried the vinegar on files. Not really sharp but fairly clean.
Good job.
Thanks man!
Muito bom meu amigo que Deus te abençoe muito bom mesmoObrigado
those asmr videos are the best :D
Nice job. 12:32 - looks like you put a layer of something between the file and the back. What is that?
There was a piece of hard cardboard there just to keep the other side of the file from rubbing to the steel shaft if it starts to loosen
Very Clever !
I really like it!
Overly Ergonomical... No, Perfectly Ergonomical
good job
You did amazing I thought
Really fantastic
Good lord man give your vise some love and put some shims in to prevent the jaws from being damaged.
1:55 Cool angle!
I have to admit that the first couple opening notes of the background music made me think you were using Bitches Brew by
Cool 🔥🔥👍👍👍
Belo trabalho
Enjoyed your vid! Was there a reason you oiled before gluing the ring? Wouldn't that prevent the glue from soaking into the grain?
Thank you, Im glad you enjoyed it. There was no specific reason for that. Or I can't remember one. It didn't matter as I put enough glue in there to make a tight enough fit after hardening even if it didn't stick to anything.
This will blow up
I mean your channel
Thanks! Let's hope it does
@@OddTinkering It did!
excellent
Thank you!
Epoxi?
Why notadd a longer screw at the end and add a knob?
I want to know how to do after the restoration
Que líquido es y con que? Para remover ese metal
I wonder if that shape of handle would not be more suited to a file meant to bite on a pull, rather than a push, but I do not know a lot about files, so for all I know, all files are supposed to cut on a push.
The etching technique was fucking cool.
1:18 Pouring the vinegar at the start.. He should've went "Aaagghhh" lol...
vedi-nice

Why not replace the screw and nut with another screw like the front.
U need to restore that bench vise
wow
Awesome!!! But I hope you know that Tetanus is incurable.

My favorite part is when you piss on that stupid file. Take that, file!

loads of tetanus spores...
It only hit me now, but I hope he is vaccinated for tetanus
Vinegar doesn't help.
you make more work and degrade the quality of the etch by using rusty items
This is weird.
Если ты такой мастер, то почему тиски на приведены в нормальный вид?
Ya that's not how you put a handle on a file. Never pound the file into the handle
олень а нельзя было сразу зачистить на целой трубе, что бы не ебаться с маленьким кусочком трубы. или это понты что у тебя есть машинка
Sorry but why not? I am trying to get an understanding of these things but I'm way too amateur still.
Your file work not the best. Use full strokes when you file
