  • This was brilliant. I love hearing Pinker speak about language. He has a spark in his eye when he does it.

  • A writer not conforming to trending social sensibilities will have the benefit of excluding the readers outside of his by intended purview.

    • If what you communicate is what the audience receives, understands, and hopefully convinced, you r good speaker. Everything else is jargon and rules centered around it.

    • @@fburton8 I said hopefully, coz it's not a necessary. I can communicate perfectly and audience perfectly receive it, still they can disagree with it, which does not not mean I failed at communication. Not all communication is made for convincing.

    • They don't though. They write conversations between the subject and the reader, and while that tends to engage the inner voice, it leads to petty division in topical understandings of a writer's point.

  • Whether there is THE language is where Chomsky is a great expert. It is sheer dilettantism from Pinker to act as an authority on that particular topic where his knowledge of theoretical linguistics is not even sufficient to understand what Chomsky meant in the quote 🙄

    • ; however, Noam is tired, stale, and antiquated in his philosophical approach to quite every subject he is "solicited" for comment.

    • @@harmonyqueue He didn’t “comment” on the topic, but wrote hundreds of peer reviewed scientific articles 🙄

  • Pinker is an excellent writer, but it tends to mask some fairly flimsy and biased moves in his philosophical thinking.
