A functional walk-through of the steps required to start the Antonov AN-225 Mriya from cold and dark in Microsoft Flight Simulator, based on the default positions of switches and buttons within the cockpit. We purposely disregard the checks and balances a real crew would follow in order to shorten the start-up procedure.
Here's where you can find the checklist:

Hey could you tell me the name of that simulator and where I can purchase it thank you
I’m so happy they added her to the game. She will live on forever
When did they add her I can’t find the plane on flight sim
Когда русские освободят украину от нацисткого режима, этот шедевр советской промышленности будет возрожден.
Brilliant video. Incidentally a rectifier converts ac to dc, an inverter converts dc to ac.
Good point :) I knew what I meant to say lol
Respect for you´re making this. It´s an INSANE learning curve for this plane.
You're welcome
The plane is cool but it feels way too responsive
RIP Antonov!!! You will forever be a part of aviation and earth history!!!
Chrystal clear explanations. You saved me tremendous time and headache instead of going through the tedious checklist in MSFS with its 35+74+... items ! Thank you.
You're welcome
I truly appreciate your videos. Brief & concise both a huge benefit in viewing. Also the documentation you provide for us to use are a great benefit. Thank you.
Cheers :)
Thank you for taking the time to do this. I got in this beast today and was clueless to how to start it. Definitely earned a sub with this one.
Glad I could help
What game?
Thanks for the dummies guide to start up this plane 👍
No problem 👍
Thanks! Finally I know how to start that bird.
You weren't kidding when you said in the first look it would be a challenging checklist to do !
Heh - it's actually not as bad as I feared - a lot of the switches are in the right place at startup.
I still think I will stick with the Vision Jet. Nice, easy startup procedure. This feels more like trying to operate a Tardis, with the six stations on the console. The only difference is this plane is big on the outside as well as the inside.
Nice. How about a Tardis in MFS2020? 😊
Hey Jonathan, thank you for your amazing videos! Making the life of flight simulator more easy and more fun :D
My pleasure!
Much resepect Jonathon, I have found all your tutorials a great learning source..
I appreciate that
Awesome. Thank you this is an extremely helpful tutorial.👍
Glad it was helpful!
Amazing speed for helping to us. Thanks a lot Jonathan! good work.
My pleasure!
Enjoyed the watch, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Cool video. Small correction, an inverter converts DC to AC. AC to DC is called a power supply, of which a major component is a rectifier.
Electrician moment
Came here to say that. Work with industrial controls day in and day out. Got an eye twitch when he said "inverter" for turning AC to DC.
Yeah - I realised what I said when I watched it back (doh!)
Very nice
Thanks for your work!
My pleasure!
That's insanely cool
It really is :)
This video just showed up on my recommended, guess I now know how to start up an Antonov xD
You do!
This is a nice tutorial, helped me alot with this plane.
You're welcome :)
Thank you so much for this! I was using the tool tips last night and never got it going. Ended up just letting the game get it started. Playing DCS, with all of its Russian, I do appreciate the Crillic script and I am not sure if they will make it so that you can have straight English writing. Looking up Rectifiers last night was interesting, I was laughing when I saw what they were. One thing though, the sound. I live in Minnesota in USA, and back in '89, it had been arranged for the Russians to send over some planes to tour the country at air shows. Was the first time Russian Air Force had ever been on US soil. They brought 2 MiG 29s and a big Antonov that supported them. The AN did not fly, but it did start up. Loud does not begin to describe it. This plane, seems way too quiet in game. 747 and A310 is louder by far. You think that will change? One funny detail. Above the Pilot and Copilot station is a fan that can be turned on by the switch by the avionics bus switches right above their heads. In DCS, if you fly the Russian Hind gunship...has the exact same fan that can be turned on for the pilot. Why don't American jets have it? Lmao Again, awesome video and thank you for it.
I did a proper flight with it last night - flew a route with ATC - I'll write it up later :)
Because the American jet gets A/C
Awesome video. I might be grabbing the Antonov soon and will this for sure help a bunch. What got me curious was how did you manage to move so flawlessly through the cockpit? Kudos!
Keyboard and mouse :)
Amazing
Awesome and too the point video to get her into the air!! Just grabbed it today off the store and thankfully it's now coming with English instrument labels I believe changeable back to crillic if needed or by region maybe idk...
Only a few of the labels change :)
I like how you showed how to program your throttle quadrant and how it works.
You're welcome :)
Yes, I found that ingenious.
I've only played MSFS once or twice and am not even a real pilot but find this highly interesting nevertheless. Thank you!
You're welcome :)
NOICE VID MAN ✌🏻.. I wished if would be extended with INU Alignment phase.
Thanks!
Cheers!
Holy Molly.....well, that lady for sure had a proper flight deck.....RIP
It certainly makes things interesting when running from seat to seat :)
Subscribed. Your videos are awesome 😊
Thank you so much 😀
Thanks for the video. So the engines automatic start button, you have to hold down? Thanks.
In my experience only for a second.
This aircraft really needs multicrew! :P
Very nice!
Thanks!
I've found that you only need to bind engine axes 1 and 4 to your throttle quadrant. Each drive three engines.
Good to know!
Heartbreaking what happened to this piece of aviation history 😢
Thanks for this and your other videos. I am an ex private pilot who no longer flies as Kids, mortgage and all the other stuff of life made it impossible. MSFS seems to be my route to the technical enjoyment of flight. Would you be able to share in a video your sim gear and set up to inform new starters like me?
I have far less than most - I have the computer, a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and two controllers - a Thrustmaster Airbus stick, and throttle quadrant. That's pretty much it.
Paul, if you'd like my two cents on flight gear, I can highly recommend the Honeycomb Bravo throttle, as it is incredibly versatile, and I've managed to use it with a very wide variety of simulators and aircrafts, and for a yoke, I'd suggest waiting for the newer Honeycomb Alpha XPC. I have the basic one, I absolutely love it, but the XPC fixes the biggest gripe I have with it: no return spring for the start position on the mags. The Alpha also has quite hard springs for the pitch(coming from an LSA pilot), and while perfect for docile aircraft, it can be a bit of a handful on very responsive ones. With this setup you'd need also a rudder pedal set. I use the ones from the Thrustmaster T.16000m, and I can say they're ok for the price, but not stellar.
@@guywholikesplanes thanks very much.
I did a start from cold and dark going by the checklists in the game. What I noticed is that you didn't actually go through the fuel pump settings even though they are not all in the positions that the start-up checklists prescribe (Engines 1, 3 & 6 have identical settings and 2, 4 & 5 also have identical settings but different by one button from the others). Doesn't it matter at all? Unfortunately I don't have a deep enough understanding to see how these settings are actually influencing the system.
I was under the impression that the fuel switches WERE in the right positions? The checklist could be wrong... If you press CTRL+E, I'm pretty sure their configuration doesn't change.
R.I.P. big plane
I have no idea why I dared to watch this video (I had the choice between this video or a video of how a doctor cleans a patient's ear). I am very glad I made the right choice, as the movie 2012 showed ...you never know when this might come in handy
Hahahaha
let me learn it in case when a new An-225 is made they might require my expertise :)
Haha :)
This was my last video before the great AdBlock purge of November 2023.
This is not your video - I recorded this video...
Excellent. Any cockpit designers out there willing to change the language on the controls so we can all read? I surely can’t complain about the realism but a choice of alternate language would be a nice option.
Maybe somebody should do a version with Dymo labels stuck all over the cockpit everywhere :)
@@jonbeckett 😊 Yes to that. Where I work we call them P-Touch labels. If I was in the real plane I would P-Touch everything.
Do you know how to turn on the wipers , is it possible ?
Yes - it's possible - I can't remember off the top of my head though :)
When you load the an-225 how do you get it in a cold and dark stage?
Load at a parking space - not on a runway.
i would love to see 6 people try to fly this thing together in a shared flight scenario. Idk if thats even possible. But this plane was not made to be flown by 1 person
"And with cavier wishes and champagne dreams, those are lifestyles of the rich and famous"
Not sure I understand, given that this was a transport aircraft :)
@@jonbeckett The narrator sounds like Robin Leach.
Mate, an inverter converts DC to AC, not the opposite. A transforner-rectifier does AC -> DC. That applies to both the East and the West sides of the world. ;-)
Yep - I realised what I said afterwards :)
Is this considered antiquated? Couldn't this be replaced with a few redundant touchscreens... and pressing "APU On" would just do the seven things needed to start it? Why leave all these things up to the staff?
The aircraft was designed in the late 1970s. It first flew during the 1980s. There were no touch-screens.
Where can I download/buy this plane for MSFS?
It's in the marketplace.
cant you just press 'E' and then the plus symbol a couple times and then f for flaps?
No idea - I like running round the cockpit like a headless chicken :)
Great. All I need to do now is to ask the Ruskis to build one for me
I’m curious on how he even began to learn this. Was it trial and error or real experience with it?
It was a lot of reading, studying the checklist, a lot of looking around the cockpit with tooltips on, a lot of use of Google Translate in Camera Mode, and yes - some trial and error. I wrote out the steps by hand in a notepad first, and then typed them up. It's not actually as involved as lots of other aircraft - it's just spread out :)
@@jonbeckett I see! Thanks for replying and clarifying. Much respect to you for going through all that, I know it must have taken quite some time to do, so thank you very much for providing the information you obtained through your effort. Much appreciated!
Hey could anyone out there tell me the name of this flight simulator and where I can purchase it and download it thank you I have microsoft-flight-simulator X
Microsoft Flight Simulator. You're can get it from the XBox store (for PC), or steam.
@@jonbeckett thank you sir
@@jonbeckett hey how you doing I have another favor to ask of you could you message me and tell me how do I download that aircraft to Flight Simulator X I have downloaded it to the computer but I do not know how to get it into the game could you message me and tell me step-by-step how to do it I would appreciate it thank you
@@Trump145 it's not for FSX lol - I don't have FSX
Helo ❤❤❤like
just got this plane and it keep telling the me transponder is not working right. so if you know please tell me. yea ATC keep saying it.
It's not telling you it's not working right - it's telling you that you have not set the transponder. It may be a limitation of the aircraft at the moment - I'll have a look next time I load it up.
Help me.. I can't buy this product with this error. I have to figure out how to buy it. Thank
It's in the marketplace. The Marketplace uses your Microsoft account. Go to the Microsoft store, then your account, and check your payment details.
@@jonbeckett Thank You. But I haven't done it yet
I hope someone makes a dcs mod with this model
Good luck with that :)
guess I have a bug or something I go full throttle and all but two engines shut off but all throttles move with my x56
That's a bit odd. Must be a control issue.
when I saw this engineering miracle destroyed i felt like those characters in the movies where the head of the statue of liberty is on the beach :(
Same.
What are your pc specs?
3.6Ghz I7, NVIDIA 3080RTX, 16Gb RAM, fibre to the house.
Cool thanks, im building mine for msfs just wanted to see whats good
Now I just need a pc……😢 (cries in Xbox)
I'm sure it will arrive on XBox soon
@@jonbeckett 🥲it did.
I can’t find it in the store anymore, I’m on Xbox
It got updated last night :)
Good job! But I can shorten the process even more: 1. Jump in and get it going 2. Take off 3. ??? 4.Profit Okay, so that's a bit of an oldie. 🤣😂🤣
:)
My question is where's the transponder on this thing?
Good question :)
How do I get this plane?
It's in the marketplace.
@@jonbeckett for Xbox series x?
It's kinda sad to see after decades of development on flight simulator they still don't have proper support for more than 4 engines -.-
It's an edge case.
@@jonbeckett B-52, B-36, XB-70, B-47, Saunders-Roe Princess, ANT-16, ANT-22, Short Sarafand, Latécoère 521, Latécoère 631, Blohm & Voss BV 222/238, Ju-390, most recently the Pathfinder. That's just the 6-engined ones, plenty of other engine configs as well. Not really an edge-case when there are two dozen.
You can change it from cyrillic to english
I left it in cyrillic on purpose :)
@@jonbeckett oh i thought since you said that it was all in russian i thought maybe you didn’t know you could do that
rip to the biggest plane in the world
First - Build new AN-225

safe to say thet nobody will have to use this guide for some time come, eh
I use it :)
Ctrl+E
That's no fun though! :)
Lol the makers of this airframe did not have russian illerates in mind during production.
Then you've got to turn them all off again!😐
Yep - doesn't take long though :)
For when you need to fly to China when the world is about to end in giant cataclysm. Noooooooo!! Sashaaa!
Glory to Ukraine 💙💛. The jet is awesome
It's great fun to fly.

What a beautiful plane, it’s a shame russia destroyed it
Indeed.
Checks and balances…?? 😂 Are you starting a plane or opening a bank?
To fly the Antonov, very probably :)
kinda like turning on a wife
Ahem.... no comment.
