Sufjan Stevens - Mystery of Love (From "Call Me By Your Name" Soundtrack)

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME is a sensual and transcendent tale of first love, based on the acclaimed novel by André Aciman, written by Oscar® nominee James Ivory and starring Armie Hammer (The Man from U.N.C.L.E, On the Basis of Sex) and Timothée Chalamet (Lady Bird, Little Women). Its soundtrack is a mix of 80s pop, classical compositions & songs by singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens, including two songs written specifically for the film.
Listen to the full soundtrack: soundtracks.lnk.to/CallMeByYo...
While the soundtrack for CALL ME BY YOUR NAME is a compilation of tracks by numerous musicians, Guadagnino decided he wanted to approach American singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens to create a song especially for the film. “An artist for whom I have enormous admiration is Sufjan. His voice is fantastic and angelic, and his lyrics are so sharp and deep and full of sorrow and beauty. The music is so haunting. All these elements were the ones I wanted to envision in the film.”
While Guadagnino knew that Stevens had never collaborated on a movie before, he reached out. Stevens read the book, they had a long conversation, and the result was that he wrote not one, but two original songs for the film: “Mystery of Love” and “Visions of Gideon”.
The soundtrack for CALL ME BY YOUR NAME also includes tracks by John Adams and Ryuichi Sakamoto as well as pieces written by Erik Satie, Maurice Ravel and Johann Sebastian Bach. As the film is set in the 1980s, Guadagnino chose period Italian pop music (including Giorgio Moroder & Joe Esposito’s “Lady Lady Lady”) for the radio, but particularly spotlights The Psychedelic Furs’ anthem “Love My Way”. “I love The Psychedelic Furs,” says Guadagnino. “It’s kind of autobiographical, because I remember listening to that song when I was seventeen and being completely affected by it. I wanted to pay homage to myself then.”

LYRICS
Oh, to see without my eyes
The first time that you kissed me
Boundless by the time I cried
I built your walls around me
White noise, what an awful sound
Fumbling by Rogue River
Feel my feet above the ground
Hand of God, deliver me
Oh, oh woe-oh-woah is me
The first time that you touched me
Oh, will wonders ever cease?
Blessed be the mystery of love
Lord, I no longer believe
Drowned in living waters
Cursed by the love that I received
From my brother's daughter
Like Hephaestion, who died
Alexander's lover
Now my riverbed has dried
Shall I find no other?
Oh, oh woe-oh-woah is me
I'm running like a plover
Now I'm prone to misery
The birthmark on your shoulder reminds me
How much sorrow can I take?
Blackbird on my shoulder
And what difference does it make
When this love is over?
Shall I sleep within your bed
River of unhappiness
Hold your hands upon my head
'Til I breathe my last breath
Oh, oh woe-oh-woah is me
The last time that you touched me
Oh, will wonders ever cease?
Blessed be the mystery of love

  • Now I understand why I feel nostalgic every time I hear this song. I don't miss any lovers who even does not exist. I miss only my youth, my hot summer 2020 when I watched this film for the first time. I miss the time when there was no war in my lovely Ukraine. When I was kinda happy and played Minecraft with my friends all days and all nights. All of my friends was alive. The only thing that worried me was my new college in September. I used to have dinner in 4 a.m., smoked at my balcony, watched sunrises and was going to bed like in midday. I had home. I had friends. I miss that life without PTSD. I miss my life.

  • as I’m currently listening to this,I’ve turned 16. The age I’ve always wanted to be ever since I was a kid. Sadly it hasn’t been a good start to this new chapter. As I’m listening to this I’m currently dropping tears of sorrow. The feeling of loneliness and sadness is eating me up alive on this bittersweet day. Fortunately,I haven’t got any more tears to drop but my heart aches. This song brings back many memories of happiness which I’m willing to relive. May 16 be a year of happiness. To all the teary 16 year olds,I love you. You’re not alone. I’ll make my younger version of me proud, after all she is still inside me,I don’t reckon she’d like it if I’m feeling down on the day I’ve been waiting for my whole life. I’ll start working on myself,I’ll make me proud.

  • "Like Hephaestian who died, Alexander's lover". Alexander and Hephaestion went together to visit the captured Persian royal family. Its senior member, the queen Sisygambis, knelt to Hephaestion pleading for their lives. She mistook him for Alexander because they both were young men, and wore almost same clothes. After she realized she mistook Hephaestian as Alexander, she was embarrassed for the mistake, but Alexander said "You were not mistaken, Mother; this man too is Alexander." Alexander and Hephaestion were said that they were lovers. They grew up together and loved and trusted eachother unconditionally. When Hephaestion died, Alexander was in so much pain that he could not let go of Hepaestion's body for two days. He wept and did not eat at all. Their tutor Aristotle described them as "one soul abiding two bodies," Alexander died shortly after Hephaestian's death. It is believed that he died mostly out of grief. Imagine being in love with someone so much to the point where you call them by your name. To the point where you see yourself in them. Reading this made me feel another heavy emotion. I finally understand the reference on the song on a deeper level. The book, movie and this song are arts. Damn, my heart. I dont think I can recover from this information. Goodnight/day.

It makes me ache for love, even if right now I'm terrified of it. I can't listen to this amazing piece without crying, which is a bummer, because it really is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I want "Mistery of Love" to feel different for me. I want love to feel different for me. In the future, when I get married, this will be the song that will play when I walk down the aisle to the love of my life. That's a promise. (19/01/2020)
