Animated Sci-fi short film "Laniakea"

The action takes place in the future, when superluminal speeds allow for travel to any point in the universe. People are hoping to find extraterrestrial life, but as of yet no one has succeeding in finding anything. One day, a lonely man finds a message in a monolith that has been drifting in space. It helps him to find a portal that leads to the home planet of those who made the monolith. He finds a giant structure, a building. But ...This place is breathing on its own. Where has everyone gone?

Special thanks to my University and Proshina Anna who helped me with a rendering.
The inscription on the monolith is a Vulcan language from Star Trek. I didn't have time to design my own language at that time, I'll create a unique language for the second part, and will try to replace it in the re-edition.

    • The scariest type of alien, to me, is one that is so advanced it is beyond our understanding. For example, if you want to build a road but there is an ant colony in the way, you do not stop construction. You don't try to explain the road to the ants, or politely ask them to move. They couldn't possibly understand. You just pave over their little world. In that example, we are the ants. Alien society could be all around us and we lack the senses or cognitive ability to perceive understand it. We could be like ants in an ant farm, with our dimensional travel artificially restricted so we can be observed. We would never know the difference.

    • @@a13william70 Hollywood has two objectives. First make as much money as possible. Being progressives they think the American People are all imbeciles, and so make movies made for the lowest common denominator, but adjust the denomination downward by a few zeroes. Second, being a pack of progressives beholden to Marxist ideology, and significant ownership by the Chinese Communist Party, they only make films that they think will spread their socialist religion. Which is why every Hollywood movie is like a lecture from a disdainful abusive public school teacher foisting communist talking points with impressive special effects, but dialog and plots made for the mentally retarded. They think that is, aught, could, should be the mainstream of entertainment. Instead we get another hollowed out film that uses established characters from existing franchises as tabula rasa masks absent any relationship to the original source material. Its propaganda, and expensive awful propaganda at that.

  • It's interesting to see so many inspirations through this short film, the monolith concept from 2001, some of the early structures looking like Chris Foss spaceships, the vaulted pyramid structures like in Blade Runner, the hint at a possible Matrix concept holding all the remaining beings, the floating objects like the aliens out of AI, the portal jumps like in Babylon 5, even the vastness of the megastructures making me think of the Krell from Forbidden Planet. So many ideas pulled together nicely for a stunning piece of work, I know I went back and watched it in full screen, so much better.

  • Not the best quality but for a one man project its amazing. Love the geometry of the planet. The story is ok. Obvs the aliens decided to give up on the real life existence and toke a big nap instead. But I kinda love that feeling of cosmic loneliness. Its like arraving at the party when everyone have already gone home.

    • The message that was sent out was a distress signal, so I don't think that they simply got addicted to VR. However, I am guessing that they are asleep in those pods. Maybe that were hit with an uncurbable plague and they went into stasis before they died in the hope that someone with better medical technology can revive them and cure them.

      @wordsofcheresie936@wordsofcheresie9363 жыл бұрын
    • All those life-pods presumably occupied, perhaps waiting for a specific time to re-emerge after some threat is long gone. IDK. This reminds me of J. Michael Straczynski’s Babylon 5 series that aired after the first series ended where several worlds were found with all the inhabitants tucked away in stasis deep underground until the threat had finally dissipated. The architectural accomplishments of this race is quite beautiful. Gorgeous imaginative work by the artist of this video. I’d love to see the story of who they are and why they had built this stasis facility, assuming those are indeed stasis pods.

  • Stunning visuals and clearly the artists spent countless hours working. It's such a shame the voice work wasn't up to the same standards. Others may disagree but I found the voice unconvincing and it completely took me out of it.

    • Yeah - find a better voiceover talent; it would make it perfect. Script was ok but i'd suggest another editor's pass over it. Awesome otherwise!

    • Not just the voice, the story was a bit basic. No obstacle to overcome. More like looking out the window of your car as you travel. Too passive. The visuals were wonderful, but a very thin story, badly translated, won't be improved by better voice talent.

    • I liked the voiceover. It comes across as someone who has been alone, for a looong time. Finally finding something of significance and trying to record his thoughts and findings for posterity but having trouble because he’s so unused to speaking his thoughts out loud I’ve often wondered what it would be like, to wander through an ancient, dead civilization. Where I was the ONLY lifeform left.

    • Arthur C. Clarke wrote an amazing story about a civilization that built monuments before their star went nova so that other civilizations would know that they had existed. The humans find one of these monuments that records all that they had done. The astrophysicist on the ship realizes that the nova that destroyed the civilization would have been visible on earth in the year zero and that it had been recorded in the bible as the star of Bethlehem that announced Jesus' birth. I believe that the story was called, "The Star". Here is a link to the story. It is only four pages. sites.uni.edu/morgans/astro/course/TheStar.pdf

  • Really enjoyed this, amazing concept. Am I right to assume the guy on the suit is not human? The only thing that left me perplexed is the fact that he assumed the whole planet was a cemetery without exploring it all. For all he knows the rest of it could be crawling with life. Anyway, I really hope you'll be able to expand on this, as it's truly deserving. Great work 👍🏻🖤☠️
