I feel that Ava's character was basically the same thing as a 16 year old girl writing herself in a fanfiction of Borderlands that she created. They could have had a chance to make her character sympathetic but her backstory was delivered in a mocking tone by Private Beans, so any sympathy is replaced with sarcastic jeers, like "LOL SHE LIVED IN THE SEWERS" or some shit. And her being embarrassed about it and trying to stop more of the past from being revealed instead of opening up with the Vault Hunters(or the player) about her past in the side mission or at the end cemented her as a teenage girl trying to keep a secret and if a player already hated her, they would laugh along with Beans and would want him to read more of the diary. And after Maya's death, as shown in the director's cut, they HAD a chance to flesh her out into a likable character and not just put 100% of the blame on Lilith like she did in the original cut and just constantly twisted and twisted the knife until she gained Maya's powers and the fact after all that, she gains Sanctuary III just like that? Even after she treated Lilith like shit and blamed her for everything? And I don't remember hearing an apology. Then there's the issue with the writer's fixation on her. Like Randy Bitchboy celebrating her openly and openly supporting the idea of more DLC's with Ava. Kinda sus that he's simping over a 13 year old girl lol. And he openly attacks anyone who hates Ava or felt like Ava could've been written better, like we aren't supposed to question his genious or something. When clearly he did not think of the consequences for the writing process of Ava. Like why not just finish the funeral scene? Why make Ava blame Lilith when Lilith had NO idea the Calypso Twins would attack from outta nowhere? Why put Ava on a bright pedastal from when she was introduced and to the end and the director's cut DLC? And why have AVA, an inexperienced siren that only been in combat for a few sections for the Borderlands 3 game, inherit the Sanctuary III ship and have her become the entire leader of the Crimson Raiders? But these are questions we can't ask. These are just things we have to accept and it will just be there and it'll go, like that. In an instant.

she had SO MUCH POTENTIAL, but oddly, making her more "Realistic" made her the worst character in the series, and this is from someone who before The vault on promethia, thought Ava could have been one of the best!

Id still punch her in the face. Not to mention the suspense of disbelief with how Mayas death was. Compared to Jack killing Roland, Jack had seen this output on Elpis and was able to instantly kill Roland and capture Lilith. And the Vault Hunters couldn't have actually intervene since Lilith was in front of them and that Jack had put a collar on her to somewhat control her siren powers.
The biggest issue I have with Ava is actually one. There was no teaching moment. When Maya died and Ava began to freak out at everyone, you should have had someone step in and show her that if Ava can't even fight back against a normal person...what chance does she have against TWO sirens? The potential for Krieg, Gaige, or maybe even Axton to help Ava...because they were close to Maya as well...could have been something special.

The calypsos would've killed Maya anyways, if they didn't kill her in the vault they would've came back for her. Her power literally allows them to pull the moon closer while simultaneously charging it

For me the two deleted scenes are the canon scenes. It's still so weird that they just didn't finish those two scenes. Would have given Lilith and her more backstory and a better ending for Maya.

Her backstory isnt enough to redeem her. People are not going to accept Ava until she shows maturity. She needs to accept responsibility for her part in Maya's death and expresses real pain and regret for what she did.
I really hope she gets some more development in the 4th DLC, since she has Maya's powers and it's about Krieg (from what we've seen).

I love this guy’s videos. I’ve watched all the “history of” videos. super entertaining and informative on the characters.
The thing is... If a person you like dies near you... even if it was NOT your fault, you being near makes you feel guilty. Makes you think "If only I had/ had not done [blank], they could still be alive..." Even if it was NOT your fault at all. Except Ava doesn't. She SOMETIMES blames the Calypsos (fair), but mostly blames Lilith. She does NOT blame herself AT ALL for what happened to Maya. And apparently you *don't* get a point where the player sits her down and tells her to stop lashing out. She just gets to yell at Lilith until they fight the Calypsos and moves on. So she is, at least partially (although depending on who you ask, COMPLETLY) responsible for Maya's death, spends the whole game blaming someone who wasn't there, then gets Maya's powers and gets to *own Sanctuary.* Her backstory can be as sad as you want - her actions and the way the game does NOT confrot her actions, but instead *rewards her* with Siren powers and a ship-planet is what makes her unlikable. It's like if Sheep Sanders after betraying Roland, Lilith, Mordecai and Brick got to be the richest man in Pandora, married a supermodel, _got a big colorful lolipop_ and was accepted into the Crimson Raiders, no strings attached. No. Brick split his fucking head open. And, mind you, Sheep Sanders was NOT the one who killed Brick's dog. He was just a cunt-wagon sellout. The reason why people want to see Krieg doing arts and crafts with Ava's spine is because it would make sense for Krieg, of all characters, to go on a year long murder spree after finding out what happened to Maya. And after finding out that Ava was involved, regardless of how much, he *would* nail her hands to a wall unattached to the rest of Ava's body. {For real, Krieg is more cruel and insane than Brick. Anybody who says otherwise is wrong.} Maya's death switched Ava from an over-confident teenager wanting to prove herself to a reckless kamikaze teenager. Who the game does NOT confront in any meaningful way. Her character did NOT grow in an emotional level. She didn't turn into Iñigo Montoya after Maya's death, becoming a more mature person but still seeking revenge beyond anything. She didn't turn into Sasuke, flipping her personality into quiet and distant until she got her revenge. She didn't turn into Kratos, recklessly looking to kill the Calypsos at any cost at all, only to afterwards realize that killing the Calypsos did NOT make her feel better. She did not turn into Tina, who had a hard time accepting Roland's death and moving on. She just... turned out to be Ava. And no sad backstory is going to change that. The only thing that can change her is Gearbox, making Ava change. Otherwise she just keeps being the most hated character of the franchise to date by a wide margin. -Or Gearbox can just say that she is great, that gamers are just mean. That can happen I guess-

Idk if you can say they do. The Captain thing was head canon. What was said was he gave her a place on the crew (Crews tend to work) She stole then sold. It says nothing about conditions etc the only thing we can take from it is she'd rather steal and move than work. Snapping on Lilith the first time maybe..... If we see the reason for it is she can't admit the part she played. Maybe even the second time would be understandable if we find out she played some part in her initial situation. We get nothing just blame for something that had to be done. It wouldn't be too hard to imagine the trouble she was initially in was because she stole..... Not out of necessity but just because. We see the evidence of that when it comes to Maya's book.

A character who stole because she could from the wrong people resulting in for all they know is being orphaned. Would fit BL. Would anything be enough now? Everything after the initial campaign will just be a fix on something they never seen as a problem. Also if they went with thief who may have got her parents keeled it would make much more sense for her to gain Nyriads siren powers. If that were to work though Maya would have had to live. She'd already lived with that curse and she found a way to survive and make the best of life. What lost her everything Maya took her in for. It wasn't difficult to think of something but we got nothing. A character who blamed others for the part she played who thought and still thinks she were always right about attacking the twins. Now the leader.... Its scary.
To be honest I kind of liked Ava at the beginning, her intro with searching the graves was funny. I think it's after Maya's death that the writing went a bit south, but I think if they mature her in the next game she could still be a good character, it's a shame she got so much hate.
If she acts like a mature person, not a spoiled brat that can't take anything on herself, than I'm fine with her in the next game.

Having a video about ava I can already see the turmoil in the commemts but I'd like to just say thanks for making a video thats not just shitting on her as a character. I know that everyone doesn't like ava and some to a.. large extent, and I will admit she isn't a perfect character like a few we've had, people are always going to dislike some and that can't be helped. Personally I hope we get a dlc of ava and kreig, it would give closure to mayas death that was written off so suddenly, bring back kreig who we all love and have him go through the process of grieving and potentially give ava a chance to get to know maya the way kreig did rather than a tutor who forced her to meditate rather than adventure. She isn't a fleshed out character and along with some others development in 3 wasn't the best written either but I still have some hope for her and maybe further in the furture we can see her grow

I kinda figured out why we didn't receive sanctuary instead of ava, we didn't because like borderland 2 in the end the vault hunters would go separate paths and some of them has some serious reasons, moze being a member of urasa squad meaning she might endup meeting on of them again placing the dept on her head for leaving her duty, fl4k being hyperion bot meaning he might be targeted by someone that might activate the hyperion protocol, zane lost his brother to bl2 vault hunters meaning either he seek answers or something else like being targeted by individuals, amara being the tiger of paratli she might return to her home like maya did.
All valid reasons, frost knight. Too bad the developers did not use any of those reasons or similar. The BL3 writing team/developers went the SJW route. Everything makes perfect sense for Borderlands 3 when you realize the entire story is for Social Justice Warriors and Social Justice Warriors only.

Though I am new to Borderlands and even I think Maya's death was not very good, I wouldn't mind seeing some character development with Ava. A good bit of maturing, maybe some backstory detail. A DLC follow-up to BL3's story (like what the Cmdr. Lilith DLC did) would be great.

I personally love her, like I find no issue with her whatsoever bc maya could have left rather than scolding her and scold her on the ship and she doesn't admit her faults because her emotions overtake her, Lilith was literally responsible for the death of Roland but she is praised, even in borderlands 2 before fight for sanctuary she's praised and that doesn't make any sense. okay, doesn't really make sense as she did mature through the game and she was mourning maya's death and talked to Lilith probably realizing she was wrong but yk you just read past lore. And Ava's heart loved Maya that's why she disobeyed her because 1 she wanted to spend more time and 2 her parents died because she obeyed them and I get that she had a role in maya's death and could've prevented it but maya could have simply left and scolded her on the ship. Idk why she's compared to Tina as ava's parents were killed when she was at a younger age then Tina and Tina had responsible friends like Roland who she loved and found inspiring so she changed her attitude a bit. Also ppl in the comments saying Tina took Roland death responsibly. Did you not download the dragon keep dlc she was just cutting off and abruptly continuing the game. Although Ava acts like a rebel following rules in that world does nothing. From birth maya was being used and she killed him when she turned 27 is one example. It's simply insane that so many people hate on Ava because of her personality and her reluctance to change but maybe if you were paying attention she actually likes Lilith and she was really sad about maya's death she was just largely annoyed at herself and took it out on others. I feel like I should get this off my back. But let's face it Ava doesn't seem to be the most likeable character in Borderlands. Hell her character alone is a train wreck. But watching Maya die a lot of times. Ava mourning her. And raging at Lilith. She tends to be more arrogant then she is sympathetic. But that doesn't mean that there's no room for improvement for her. Ava's character maybe not be the best but, that doesn't mean she's not a good person. I really for the life of me can't understand why Ava gets the level of hate she gets to me its just plain ridiculous. Especially when shes blamed for Maya's death: Yes if she wasn't in the Vault then Maya would have left. But whats to say the Twins wouldn't have come even if she wasn't their, you really think the calypsos would pass up the chance for more Siren powers after what they got from lilith hell no they probably have attacked Maya before we went into the vault. No my hatred for Mayas death is purley focused on the two who killed her, and every time they brought it up was one more nail on their coffin. I also see a lot of potential in her. Characters like her the Young, bratty, inexperienced youths are the Kind of Characters who have the most potential for growth in Video Games. And I for one believe that if Avas character was given more time she could probably be a siren just as good as Maya in the future, after all Maya did see potential in her why shouldn't we.
The writers said Maya seen potential.... The foundation of the Character that is Ava is so messed up what repairs can be done? Yes the Calypso twins would have still showed probably... However she'd have not had to worry about the safety of another. Ava being there turned it into a 3 on 1. All the Character we have right now is she steals even when unnecessary and shes unable to accept responsibility for any part she played..... Placing blame on someone who was only doing what was necessary. Even in the end Ava thought she was always right. No growth and from someone who's choices would have doomed them all.

Honestly no idea why so much hate for her. I mean some hate sure, but some people act like she’s the sole reason Maya died, when in reality she’d die regardless...unless she somehow manages to take both the twins out without touching them. I actually question why our character stood there instead of shooting. If it’s because she’s useless ok sure, but most characters are useless in this game. Zero was a assassin, and built up to be pretty badass on the side games, but has like one or two missions with him, before he becomes Mr. Cameo.

I guess the Problem with Ava is, to be honest and fare, is she just Too Normal To be in these World. She is not crazy or funny in a crazy way. Also, she just did too little help to us, Unlike Tina and Pickle, who are annoying but helpful, and confident even after their disasters. If Ava has some help during our visit on Eden 6, like steal something to Help us or maybe develop some character to relief herself from Maya's death, she could be a better, at least tolerable character.

I just wonder why people would hate Ava. Just because she got maya killed does not mean she is the worst character, it was just an accident. In my opinion, her backstory was pretty much tragic and that is pretty much the reason why I don't hate Ava.
Ava gets a lot of hate because overall she's not an interesting character. Gearbox didn't do a very good job developing Ava as a character, for most of the game she was just "there" barely contributing to the overall story. By the end she gets power and authority, many players feeling that she didn't earn them.

she can be omitted from the story and have no significant plot value to the story. shes literally written in out of nowhere with no genuine backstory other than a copy of Tinas background. She kills off 2 main plot significant characters of out sure recklessness by not listening to the words of 1, and telling the other to burn in a fire. I hope they kill her in the most painful, shameful, and gruesome way possible. I cried when most of the characters died in borderlands. When Ava dies I am popping Champaign, because you do not ruin a story for audience sake, and because you wanted to add a new hip siren with no relevancy to anything. (there is a huge story that comes into all the past sirens and their back stories) but i digress regardless.

When the history of a character is better than the present. I would much rather have the old sad Ava than the present annoying one.
I think the sad backstory is the writers trying desperately to make her likable. It won't work.
Devicive probably the best word to describe.......her Obviously not breaking new ground by saying this but, the biggest problem is that the game keeps treating Ava like she's completed her personal growth, while she; A. Has done nothing to earn any of what she is literally handed on a metaphorical silver plater 1B. Continues to act like a shitty spoiled brat when things get tough, which while realistic, fails because no one pushes back, meaning she's never outwardly forced to confront her actions 2B. Most of these characters wouldn't just take that, they've been through what she has a hundredfol, there was so much opportunity for someone, anyone to say "I've been where you are and, I also miss Maya, but you need to back the fuck off" (or something to that effect) but it's all, just, wasted It really does leave you just feeling like the writers are dangling their super cool OC do not steal in front of your face during the storybits (additionally nothing against the VA I'm sure she did the best she could, just don't like the character)

5 months later.... The characters foundation is just not there they began building a sky scraper on a hill with no foundation whatsoever. There are pieces but they never came together. Something happens on the run alone she's given a spot on someones crew. Instead of what we can assume is work and have a place she steals and sells the item. The thievery can't even be seen as out of necessity once we learn she tried to steal Maya's book. The Character decides to ignore her mentor resulting in what would have already been a 2 on 1 turning into a 3 on 1. Fighting both the Calypso twins tough but fight them and knowing your apprentice is a snap away..... Characters make bad decisions and grow from them. They learn they are not always right. Ava didn't grow... She never had to admit the part she played and even at the end believes the best option all along was to attack the twins. What we're left with is a whiny child who will doom them all and blame it on someone else.

Ava had potential however like many I agree that the writing of Borderlands 3 especially after the first vault on promethea is....sloppy. Its funny how many years they had to make this game yet it was still SOMEHOW rushed the way it was. I don't blame the story writing team though, as like i said, was clearly rushed. If they were given more time I'm sure Ava, Mayas death, and so much more would have been better about BL3s story. You can even see in parts where things were likely gonna go different but sadly wasnt fulfilled.
Idk a ton of the problems I seen with the story wasn't the writing but the thinking behind it. A huge problem being the Vault hunter is just a spectator. It shows heavily in the Clay mission where you find his team ambushed watch a playback and none of them realize the traitor wasn't there and supposedly dead. The logic in some parts is simply missing while others were pretty well done. I think the fault is with a writer who should maybe be unemployed.

I will say it the character is OKAY! but that the probleme she needed to be more she has been created to be an opposite of the Calypso Twins: a vault hunter fan but unlike them she wants by admiration becoming one unlike them who were lost in the ways. but there is not enough side quest developping her character like having a therapy about maya death then made her recover mayas ash then spread them on Athena with why not a Krieg cameo. Other with us and her meeting other vault hunter and do quest together.
