    • @ichaelis Problem is, given the span of the game's timeline (usually within 24 hours), no character is given time to develop. I'd like to see something stretched out over a longer period of time, say a few weeks to a month to give those characters a chance to shine and change over time. May be a slower pace, but this game ain't supposed to be quick action, anyway.

  • Story is ripped from a real ghost ship story and would be more effective if they held closer to it. Set it a year or two after the incident have the main characters happen across ship by accident and the pirates showing up because they responded to the distress call. Spend first half of the game explore the ship seeing contorted bodies of the crew then slowly have characters descend to madness the closer they get to the cargo hold

    @jameskeen3321@jameskeen33214 жыл бұрын
    • Or come up with a supernatural story line. Why not a type of spirit or demon who was controlling the ship as well as those who died on it? At least, that was the theory I had when I first saw this game.

    • How does one respond to a distress call that was made years ago? Is that a thing that actually happened irl? Or, well, i suppose it could have made for a cool supernatural element, with the call only being heard years after due to a time anomaly or some such

  • Actually, Fliss does comment on Conrad acting weird when he's being chased around by what he thinks is a pin-up girl...but only in a run where Conrad DIES during that moment. Only further pointing out how bad the cohesion in this game's story is. As for Joe getting spooked by a kid in the opening, he knows that there's a child-sized coffin on the ship, and documents you find in-game reveal that it caused the crew to believe that there was a ghost kid on the ship. Combined with the fact that he has a kid of his own, it's understandable. Where that sin applies more instead, though, is why Fliss hallucinated a giant ballroom being used for a satanic ritual, since we hadn't encountered anything related with any characters which would cause her to see it. Also, the coffins in the open were being used to transport American corpses from the area where they seized the Manchurian Gold. The US was developing bioweapons there, & those were the casualties. They actually DO pay off later, as Alex will hallucinate a two-headed monster based on the skeleton he sees...but ONLY on certain runs. Again, a lack of cohesion is this game's biggest flaw. It's one thing to use a guide that lets you know about the path to keep everyone alive, it's another just to require a guide to get the path that EXPLAINS AND TELLS A FRIGGIN' STORY. Anyhow, great video as usual, can't wait for Gears 5!

    • Fliss was reading a book about the Salem witch trials. It had a hooded figure on the cover.

      @dizzy5@dizzy54 жыл бұрын
    • @@dizzy5 No, that was Julia who was reading it, you can find it in the bag in her cabin. Fliss can come across it, as can others, but it's purely optional. For that matter, satanic rituals & the Salem witch trials are two vastly different beasts.

      @SlyDante@SlyDante4 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah, that was my biggest problem. That and it feels like there was supposed to be more to it. Maybe that's solved by playing the way that makes sense? Idk. I haven't gotten around to playing a second time yet. It's like once everyone got back together it was basically over when it really felt like it was just starting to ramp up. I'm curious though, do you know how Fliss can save Conrad? Is that only if you got their relationship high enough in the beginning? What about different characters going on to find the power switch? The only ones I've seen are Brad/Alex and Julia, but in this video for the sins he had Fliss and Alex. And I'm still really not clear on how to get that scene he had where you fight Olsen for the distributor cap. I got the one where he just dies of a heart attack.

      @moonlitxangel5771@moonlitxangel57714 жыл бұрын
    • I heard another KZheadr mention that Fliss’ strong belief in the supernatural is what caused her to see the ballroom. As it was full of a couple other horrors that are associated with the supernatural e.g. a dummy, a self playing piano, and a coffin of blood.

    • Yuuup. Even more so, I think Man of Medan is way worse at letting you know why your character died when it is a result of a previous choice. I don’t want to have to open the choice chart menu every time a character dies to read what went wrong because it breaks the immersion completely. Not to mention the deaths being less satisfying. In my blind play through, everyone but Brad dies. Conrad got shot while trying to escape, which was clearly because we missed a quick QTE (lightning quick), but it was terribly disappointing that in Conrad’s first scene, he was dead and never part of the real story. Weird that he dies so easily given Shawn Ashmore is their most acclaimed actor. Julia got shot by Junior, and in the moment, I had absolutely no idea why. Fliss got killed by Brad after hallucinating the grim reaper. At the time, I has no idea how I could’ve saved Fliss, and then later when Brad apologizes to Fliss’ body, I still didn’t fully comprehend what went wrong. Alex got crushed by the gate after fighting with Olson, and maybe that was a matter of QTE’s too. I’ve played plenty of choice based games where I get people killed, but it’s never made me mad at the game instead of myself.

  • Additional sins: - Curved Thompson magazines, even though the only Thompsons with curved mags were ones that the Chinese modified and were not used by the US. - Censoring any mention of Japan or Unit 731, despite it being a plot point. In the game multiple pieces of information that can be found allude to soldiers go missing whilest scouting out a water purification plant in Manchuria, their bodies mangled from experimentation. Unit 731 was part of the "Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification Department" of the Kwantung Army and operated out of Manchuria. Unit 731, along with the other Units setup in Japanese controlled Asia within the Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification Department developed chemical and biological weapons, and are infamous for their incredibly gruesome human experiments, among many other horrible things. This is basically the equivalent of making a horror story set in post-war Europe with events being tied to the Holocaust, but censoring any mention of Nazis or the Holocaust. And it's no shocker that the publisher is Japanese.

But not only it didn’t get better, it also Punishes you for accomplishing something difficult (aka kills Conrad if you succeed escaping), doesn’t really make you like ANY character for real, it’s way too short, way too expansive for sure, the dialogues make no sense in many parts, and it’s just so easy to give the right answer to win the affection of another character. Not only that, but also almost no gameplay, only rely on quick time events (which try to compensate by killing you at first mistake), besides all the things at the video. I think it’s cool they made a real historical research for this, but besides that and taking in count that many game and story mistakes… I gotta say that makes it really really bad, in my opinion.

Additionally, the casket with the two headed corpse is explained on an easily missable document, that says that there was a casket shortage and thus they had to stuff multiple people into the same casket. That's not a two headed skeleton in that casket; it's the remains of two people. What should be a sin though is that everyone aboard the ship is mummified, while the bodies in the caskets, which were more protected from the elements and ravenous rats, are nothing but bones.

Lost Ending) can be partially found in the game-files, in which the ship was on fire and sinking as you deal with Olson. If you saved Junior, he could even talk Olson down and spare him. Also, there was a death scene for Alex (sequence is lost/not in in the game files) in which he is burnt to death. The aftermath of which can only be seen in one of the ending previews. The finale was supposed to be pretty epic, but they decided to give us some bland endings instead, with no real danger.

They were treated more like lab rats than POW’s and these twisted experiments caused the spies to suffer malformations of their persons before they died. The Army doesn’t want the families of the spies to know they suffered such a horrific death, so they were sending their bodies home in sealed casks. One of the soldiers must have got curious and unsealed a coffin.

I agree with most of the plot sins because there definitely was a lot of flaws that my friend and I noticed and the dialogue/acting was very clunky, but overall we had a really good time playing together. I feel like in playing solo you missed a lot of the fun aspects of the game that multiplayer has to offer. While I agree the game is nowhere near Until Dawn I wouldn’t say that it’s a bad game. We had a lot of fun, it would’ve been a lot more effective however if they didn’t make the plot twist WAY too obvious. My friend and I figured out the hallucination stuff during the prologue which made the hallucinations towards the end of the game way easier to counter. We’re playing Little Hope next and I’m hoping they improve upon the plot, but if they keep the multiplayer the way it is I will definitely be satisfied. They are believed to have died due to chemicals mixing with sea water and creating a poisonous gas. • Actually, there is a note you can find about how they ran out of coffins so they started putting two people per coffin, that's why it looks like a two-headed, four-armed creature was in the coffin. Not the game's fault if you didn't find all the info ;) Also, Joe at the start doesn't see some "random" child, he sees his son because that's what was at his mind the whole time. All of the hallucinations are related to something the person has only recently seen or thought about, and usually only turn into horror when the characters are acticely scared. Also, shooting the box the child just climbed into is really on you, the game doesn't force you to do that and most people would be at least somewhat hesitant to try and kill a child xD Also, it can be assumed the concentration of the gas was much higher at first, making it not instantly dissipate so even people on deck would have been affected. Ofc after 70 years there is a lot less left, so you might be in trouble if you go in stuffy places that were locked for 70 years, but totally fine outside.

If the child is indeed Charles, how can you explain that here, Charles isn't in the same room as Joe in the curator's cut. Because in that version, we clearly see Charles coming out of another room to find Joe dying. Now let's assume you're right and say that's an hallucination, okay, great. But in the game the child RAN at Joe stabbing him. Joe didn't just stand near a closet or whatever that is and just got stabbed. Also, if you choose not to stab, you still die of a heart attack which is not how it would've happened. Doesn't Joe shoot Charlie if he doesn't stab ? Before, I actually thought the same thing. But once you watch the curator's cut it just doesn't add up. I agree that the Charlie corpse Joe sees isn't real. But Joe's corpse in Charlie's eyes is real. That, or this is a plot hole. Wouldn't surprise me looking at how this game has been. I mean, really I thought the same thing in the beginning. The curator's cut made everything a lot more confusing.

  • It was mentioned sometime when they were discussing how to retrieve the distributor cap that Fliss' radio got damaged on their way to the Ourang Medan. IIRC seeing something break off during the storm before the boat got flooded.

  • Y'know I actually appreciate the constructive criticism you give. It's a shame most companies don't actually pay attention to these mistakes. If it's worth anything, at some point in the future I aspire to work for their company so I definitely keep errors like these in mind. Nicely done, dude!

  • There are seriously so many possible outcomes. Your gameplay is so different from mine. I got a little curious about wanting to experience those and more. But then again, I already restart 3 times already just to keep everyone alive and I was satisfied with the ending I got because I was like done with the game.

  • I am the rare person who enjoyed Man of Medan more than Until Dawn. The Until Dawn characters were too cliche for me, while this isn't. Since these characters aren't AS cliche, it lets me get more attached to them. For example, I freaked out when I killed Conrad and could barely breathe for a couple minutes before restarting the whole game. Until Dawn was a good game, but in my opinion, Man of Medan is the best one so far. Little Hope doesn't look good, either. I bet if I hadn't killed certain Until Dawn characters I would of liked it a bit more but oh well. Man of Medan, in my opinion, looks and feels better.

    • I didn’t think it was better than Until Dawn but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I understand why people disliked it because it gave away the hallucinations pretty early on, but that doesn’t make it a bad game. I figured out they were hallucinations pretty early on too but it didn’t ruin the game for me. I don’t think the characters weren’t badly written or cliché like people are saying they are. You and me and among the few I’ve seen who enjoyed Man of Medan.

  • aside from this being relatively short, i thought it was dope. comparing it to until dawn, i think, is a disservice; they are similar in function only. the story stands on its own, is multi-faceted, and impossible to grasp entirely in one playthrough or only in single-player. the multiplayer element was fun for me, and didn't ruin the story (or vice-versa), because the pacing supports both and communication between myself and my partner aided us thoroughly and only helped us to comprehend what was happening. when we realized the differences between what we were each seeing, this became even more fascinating, and finding more info on what we missed in our playthrough and other things that could've occurred increased my interest and entices me to try again. until dawn was also 60 at launch and was a standalone game. man of medan costs half that and took me longer than half the time to play, so i see its merit. it's also part of an anthology series which will offer more stories and more branching plots and endings. the value is undoubtedly there. this video is entertaining, and definitely shows some issues in the thinking that went into this game, but folks are being far too critical. lol.
