  • As a former AM/FM tower climber/service tech, the highest for me was 405 feet in the USA state of Idaho. While up there, the full size ford f-250 looked like a spec of color on the ground and the wind is always blowing a bit when ya get up around 80 feet and higher even if it’s not at ground level. I can feel the butterflies in my stomach as this guy was climbing and THEN when he looked up that last orange stretch with merely side pegs (side pegs!! ) at elevation ABOVE the clouds at 1900 feet!! Oh, hell no. I honestly don’t know if I could have committed because COMING BACK DOWN is WAY more difficult getting your footing on those pegs…way more difficult! If it took him 3 hours to climb this, it took 4 coming back down I guarantee it ! Horrendous! At this height and technical level climb, This should have been a winch-plant helicopter job.

    • @@yuval1168 Considering the base pay plus hazard bonus plus the bonus that comes from their level of experience, I doubt it. I've seen a helicopter be used to ferry single tools up to techs working on a couple hundred foot tall tower so to have one for work like this, it must be worth it.

    • The air at 2000 feet won’t be as thin. Usually 12,000 feet is when it could get extremely thin.

  • I've plumbed those antennas before. We used to loosen the bolts at the bottom of antenna and have a guy (me once) climb to the top and rock it back and forth while the guys below slid stainless steel shims in depending on the direction it needed to go. This was about 20 years ago so I'm not sure if they're still doing it the same way. Had to climb them at night sometimes too for maintenance work. I worked for Doty Moore and Seacom Erectors back in the late 90's and early 2000's so if any of you guys are in the chat let me know.

  • As a former tower climber I can tell you the last stretch of his climb was extremely dangerous. I could be getting paid 100 dollars an hour and I still wouldn’t put my safety lanyard on a step peg. I’ve had to do some questionable and outright dangerous things in the industry but I never worked on a radio tower and this is why

    • Drone rescue. I've heard of those being used. They will tie up a wrench or screwdriver or something and fly it up there

    • @@planetX15 yea usually max height is 400 feet AGL (if someone doesn't want to bend the rules). I don't register with FAA for a reason. In some cases I've used a high powered WIFI hotspot with a yagi antenna to increase the distance. There is also much better options for increasing distance.
