From early childhood, i recall Indian music was like an enchantment in grace . I also found myself attracted to anything Indian when shown on TV . I now go to India regularly and i even work with an NGO as a teacher. I would quite happily live there if i could. Indians are so adorable and calming souls. This fact is reflected in this musical work.

Way back when Paul McCartney and the Beatles brought Ravi Shankar to the western world. We all thought he was the absolute master of the sitar. But more than that he brought the wisdom of India to America. So all of these years later there is Anoushka Shankar, much of her father in her but just a next generation Ravi. I don't think so. She carries the same inner-peace seen in her father, but more than that, a woman's beauty to the music. And I have to say too, her hands and touch are amazing, an absolute master of the instrument.

I'm amazed by the fact that even though this is a "classical" raga, the exchange going on is like a jazz tune. Bebop especially, where there's a passing around of solos before everyone plays the head again. Incredible to watch

+Andrew Weitz Yeah love this music... For the more complex timings they count using their finger segments. It can get pretty crazy!
@HerrinMusic8 жыл бұрын
+Herrin Music finger segments?
@vinayseth11148 жыл бұрын
+Herrin Music Finger segments...explain? Very curious
@drewsleyy38368 жыл бұрын
So they use their thumb to touch first the tip of the little finger then each of the 3 other areas on your fingers/hand are used as a kind of drum pad. So lets say you have a 13/8 timing you would start on the tip of the pinky and count to 13 until you make it to your forefinger tip at the 13th beat then back to the pinky tip. This helps to keep track of where you are in the overall rhythm. Hope that makes sense.
@HerrinMusic8 жыл бұрын
+Herrin Music Oh ok lol- I know exactly what you mean!- it's just a way of counting the 'taal' or the time signature- Ektaaal i.e. 12 beats, for instance, is counted this way that you described ( I learnt hindustani vocals for a while). Ya now I come to think about, it's funny how easy and intuitive it is to explain visually but sounds confusing using language! That's one thing I like about Indina classical- having oral roots, and relying primarily on melody rather than harmony, it's taught in a very hands-on approach!

That Raga Jog is from the Hindustani tradition, but has a near equivalent in Nattai of Carnatic. And yes, the playing style was closer to Carnatic, though the composition was more like a tarana which is a Hindustani format, but again has an equivalent in tillana. Mind boggling, isn't it! And someone just said it's more like jazz and riffraff! LOL

India's music is so rich, much like its culture. Thank you for sharing this performance!
I speak seven languages. But still, I don't pretend to provide a precise word that'd describe what I feel when listening to this masterpiece.
Ecstasy?
Wow what a Raga, simply touches the soul.

Lucky you! I am from Chile, that means it is practically impossible that she can ever come here to play a concert... there's no significant Indian community in our country, so I guess the only way I could wonder myself with her music is flying aboard to go listening to her... and I don't think it0s going to happen soon :(
But you can listen on you tube the way we are listening right now. ...
She lives in the USA!Later,I came to learn that she lives in the UK!

After watching this, I want to become music student. What a beautiful blend.!! Love from Nepal xxx
And I have to say too, her hands and touch are amazing, an absolute master of the instrument.
mikemather5 I think you mean George Harrison....
mikemather5 lol
Ravi was world famous before the Beatles.
That may be the case, but India was not brought to the western world only by the Beatles. There are many factors besides the Beatles.
Anushka is the first could of Mr Ravisankar
Anoushka has the same face her father, but in an indecribable way she is so beuatiful 🤔. Namaste! 🇲🇽
🤔🤔
A billion times better, in every sense of the word, that today's mainstream pop hits.
Most traditional music is better than most of what’s put out today. I can’t believe this exists in a world where 6ix9ine does.
Indeed
If there is a heaven, this is what it will sound like. This music is food for the soul. My heart is bursting with joy and pleasure.
Melodious and heart touching music. Her introducing the Co artistses is so simple with a great smile.
she transforms into a goddess when she holds the sitar.. just look at her.. she is amazing.. wow !!
karan chauhan yes, I too felt.
Well, to me she looks like a goddess even without the sitar. Gorgeous!!!

the sound of violin is giving me the different vibe than what i always listen in western classical music. thr diversity of the sound that comes from one same instrument... it just feels good :)
A.R. Widyaningrum good observation. It is called the Carnatic style
You are absolutely correct!! Actually India have acquired lot of instruments from west and made them theirs according to their culture and music

Best part of studying any new language: becoming obsessed with the culture, history, and traditions. I've recently taken up Hindi (I know it's just one of very many languages of India) and I don't regret it one bit. Everything about India is just so intricate and fascinating.
+Quentin The Fawn India's great, but only if you can ignore the guys shitting on the railway tracks, and the garbage everywhere. Otherwise, the country's great.
most of ASIAN culture are great and have their own beauty, except corruption things and stuff

Wow she is beautiful and a very gifted musician!
The violin part was absolutely stunning!
I love how she gives the beat count as her father did. This really helped me to understand musical structure.. thankyou Shankars!
i have been exploring this music.....i love it.....a play the violin in a classical western traditions.....straght....regimented.....i want to learn this style
My goodness the violin solo starting from the 4th minute on wards just yanked out all the pent-up sorrow i have been carrying for God knows how long!
Huge respect for legendery Indian classical music and artists. Vande mataram!!
Why i have tears in my eyes all the time i listen?

Performance beyond human.
Voilin Padma Shankar was the best. So composed ... really a great direction for all the learning musicians ..
Wah wah.... What a lovely combination
+Herrin Music finger segments?
+Herrin Music Finger segments...explain? Very curious
'Rag Jog' is soo beautiful 😍
That string work made me cry man!
Nora and Anoushka - so beautiful and talented! Chips off the old block!!
I discovered this glorious sound in Canada with your father playing

This piece had more carnatic elements into than Hindustaani I guess... Though the instruments are pretty Hindustaani but the style of playing them are quite carnatic..
+Ajay Raghavendra yup
+Ajay Raghavendra I was so into d piece forgt wat she had said in the start
Ajay Raghavendra :P
That Raga Jog is from the Hindustani tradition, but has a near equivalent in Nattai of Carnatic. And yes, the playing style was closer to Carnatic, though the composition was more like a tarana which is a Hindustani format, but again has an equivalent in tillana. Mind boggling, isn't it! And someone just said it's more like jazz and riffraff! LOL
