As an American I find this channel worth checking out on a regular basis. Broadens one's perspective. As Europeans probably recognize Americans have a very different perspective on the size of vehicles. A number of SUV's offered here are only slightly smaller than an average apartment in Europe! (Well, that's perhaps a slight exaggeration.) We don't get the Skoda on this side of the pond and the Tiguan-Allspace is simply the Tiguan. It's(The European Tiguan has been carried over as the Tiguan Sport here but it's likely to disappear soon.) It's usually classified as a "small" or "compact" SUV in North America though its among the largest in that category. And it's usually equipped as a five passenger vehicle. The third seat is a relatively low cost option but it's typically viewed as a place suitable only for transporting a hostage, small children, or big dogs. (Cheap fuel and fast food have a significant impact on our requirements in America.) We do get the Sorento though it usually comes with a V6 petrol engine. The diesel is said to be coming soon. And far from being considered a "large" vehicle, it's the smallest of the "midsize" category at nearly a foot shorter than the VW Atlas and Mazda CX-9, each of which is in the midsize category here. (Remember, cheap fuel and fast food.) Earlier this year my wife and I looked seriously at both the Tiguan (Allspace to Europeans) and the Sorento along with several other "midsize" SUV's. I'm a VW fan with a beloved GTI but the Tiguan failed to impress in terms of performance, even compared to the Golf Alltrack. The vehicle is my wife's daily driver and she wanted a higher seating position of an SUV so the Alltrack was out. (sigh). And though we need it only occasionally, the Tiguan's third row seating was simply a joke. So that left the Sorento. We love it. Comfortable, roomy, and upscale (in its top level trim.) Great cruiser on the highway and sufficiently compact for suburban traffic and parking lots. A great warranty. Excellent room in the first two rows and a third row that's reasonably accommodating. It's no canyon carver but I have my GTI for that. All in all, it fits our needs better than any other SUV.

Honestly, I would say Kodiaq is slightly smoother driving.
Skoda = vw
The reason the tilt and slide is only at one side in the Kia Sorento is so that the rear seat passengers can only enter and exit from the kerb side, never the road side. Stops little kids (who are usually the ones in the very back) from getting run over.
Kodiaq is my favorite, same kind of good relability as the KIA and VW

I checked out the Skoda Kodiaq at the dealer yesterday and it's excellent. The storage space and details are tops and I could sit comfortably in the third row and I'm 178 cm with long legs.
But Kia is more reliable, better made.
I oddly think that the Kodiaq depending on spec is the best looking, particularly in Sportline trim

Who would have thought that with having the most room in the 3rd row, the Kia would also have the least room in the boot with all the seats up. It's almost as if geometry was an actual thing.
Ive test driven all 3. I personally preferred the Kodiaq for style points and the vw for the drive. The sorento was no where near as relaxing to drive as the other 2 and due to the high waist line of the car it was poor for viewing particularly for smaller people like my missus (5'6). She had the seat adjustment all the way up and still struggled to see the end of the bonnet when driving lol. Not to mention the sat nav on the sorento looked cheap and poor quality and dont even mention fuel economy in that thing, 33mpg at best....forget it. Go for one of the other 2.
Kia Sorento was the only one with AWD and a 2.2 diesel as standard! All the others were a merely FWD and a 1.4 petrol, not ideal for a SUV. The Sorento is more stylish, has the better interior, way more spacious for 7 people, the best foldable seats. Of course is doing 33 MPG, it's the only AWD car and besides, a car like that is meant for also long trips, so the diesel is ideal for that as well. Not to mention you have 7 year warranty. The Sorento basically won in almost every category but of course it couldn't win. Disappointed.
Diesel is a negative. More and more cities block Diesels. Long drives? With children? And how often would that happen? AWD, I agree, that is def a strength. Dunno how much more 4x4 option would cost for the Skoda. 2k-4k Euro maybe? Kia's repair costs is higher than the Skoda's. 7 Year warranty sounds good, but in reality you will get no for an answer at the dealer for lots of issues.

Not to mention the service work costs and support network. My next car for myself will be Kia or the new corrolla. I love my Tiguan but the cost is now outweighing the fun factor.

And then again a normal halogen lamp/ light costs several coins in the gas station and if properly set they wont irritate the eye. Where trying to replace ur fancy turning matrix high beam autonomus svarovski gimmicky headlamps will cost u nearly an entire monthly sallary, u morons. I still drive Golf 5 with halogen headlamps and when im passed by some ultra luxury brand car their stupidly- expensive lights hurt my eyes so much. What a useless technology that is.

If you have your car checked to VW standards they will extend the initial warranty of 3 years by another 2.
I go with KIA too, it's best looking (inside and outside), better seats and a lot of room, the only thing I didn't like its mileage.
Having owned a Kodiaq seven seater for 6 months now (2.0 TSI SportLine DSG 4WD) I have only positive things to tell about the experience. Great car, great VFM. Only negative for us is not having sliding rear doors, which was often very handy on our old Mazda. But there is no alternative car currently available with this option, so the Kodiaq is definitely the best choice if you need a seven seater, IMHO. Range Rovers are over-priced and, for whatever reason, thief-magnets.

I've had one for almost 4 years. Only major thing that needed fixing was the break discs becoming warped. The tyres are also expensive but that's to be expected on a big car
Kia has done a good job with the Sorento and the Tiguan is the nicest looking of the three, but still I'd buy the Kodiaq.

I saw one backing out and thought it was a Q7 from the side, shocked when I realized it was a skoda. It was a beautiful cream colour, very stylish.
I respectfully disagree! I think the Kia should have won that. Sure it wants a little bit more fuel and feels a little larger but most people would expect that so i dont think they would mind. Probably more reliable too. And personally i think it looks a million times better then the VW twins.
Kia won less important categories. Having a more expensive, heavier car that guzzles fuel for the one time a month you actually need to carry 7 people (which the cheapest Kodiak can do anyway) isn't what I would call a good compromise. Price, fuel consumption, driving dynamics, infotainment go a long way.

Amazing video as always but I would like to mention one or two things. This particular tiguan was very poorly speced as it was the base model while on the other hand the Kia had all the extras. I know it's not carwow's fault, they are not the ones who pick the test car but it makes the test look a bit poor. And btw where is the Peugeot 5008? It's clearly a thought competitor for the vw and the Skoda.

Hi Matt, not sure what caused it, but I have been using my Sorento 2.2 diesel for 2 months I do get 6.5-7.0L per 100km, which is around 40-42 MPG (UK). You got a poor MPG which is very strange to me.

Or you could research and see that you can get the skoda with a 5 year 150.000km warranty - which is the same distance that KIA gives you. So if you drive 30.000km a year, then it doesnt matter if you get the Kia or the Skoda.

@Thomas Lörinczi KIA has the best build quality and was the most solid of them all, which should be a very important aspect when you buy a car. Also, altough it was sligthly more expensive than the Skoda, it comes with all-wheel drive (important on an SUV) and probably the dealer will make you a good offer (not the asking price is what matters, but what you are paying). Not to say that the KIA was the most comfortable, also very important. True, it has the lowest fuel economy, but I don`t think that this alone should make it lose this battle.
@@GeorgeMariusCracu Even with the 4 wheel drive the Kodiaq is a lot less expensive. Now you add fuel consumption and better driving experience to it and you can kind of get where the result is coming from. Nevertheless I think both cars are great (the VW not as much though).

that is the issue with states. Škoda doesn't have stupidly big engies - anything over a 2.0 is an overkill, because modern 2.0 twin turbo engines have plenty of power. Why would they bother with a 3.6 VR6? Big, heavy, and the fuel efficiency doubles the cost of the car

Absolutely in korea, kia sorento has 2.0 petrol engine. It's 240hp, 370nm. But sorento is full model changed in korea. And 2.5 twin turbo petrol engine is in GT model. (In korea)it is 300hp,440nm!! (I'm not kia fanboy)

One question : If those cars are for families with haft football (soccer) team, did the third row seats has ISOFIX to put child there and free up space for adult in second raw. Because the last is too uncomfortable for big adult for a long trip and suitable for small children and installing child seats ?

Is this really a fair test? The Kia Sorento is roughly in the same size class as the VW Toureg and the Kia Sportage seems to be in the same size class as the Tiguan but the Kia does'ntcome in a 7 seater version (yet).

I think the deciding factors were the fuel economy and how fun they are to drive. Altho as the whole point of these cars is that they are spacious 7 seaters for families, i think the more comfortable and practical kia sorento should have been the winner.
Great video again! The seven seater discussion... Personally I don't understand why it's so closely attached to the immediate family size? I only have one kid, but I'd fancy a BIG 7 seater as my ride (which is currently our household's secondary car, my wife has a smart and rational hatchback for her commuting). This is because I want a car which can carry lots of stuff and people at the same time, if/when necessary. For example, a ski trip up north with my family AND 2 or 3 more people, such as our friends or the grandparents. And their luggage. I would not need the extra seats every day, but then again, great majority of car buyers in my country pick an estate variation by default, and only need the extra boot space maybe once or twice a year. If even that. I once took a Sorento (Mk2) for a test drive, but sadly I was a bit disappointed... It was noisy, quite bland, didn't feel as sure-footed in slush as the Mk2 Hyundai Santa Fe I was driving back then. But the biggest disappointment was the diesel engine, despite having almost 200hp, it wasn't noticeably faster or perkier than the Santa Fe, which had only 155hp diesel. I wish Kia had offered Mk2 Sorento with 3.3-litre V6 petrol here in Europe, but nooooo... We're Europeans, and afraid of big engines.

Out of the trio, I would pick the Skôda Kodiaq because its good value for money, has an interesting design with split-eyed headlights, a premium feeling interior, best practicality with clever features and have a comfortable floating driving experience.

Definitely not any more. We’ve just ordered a new Kodiaq for my wife and it was £10k less than the Sorento. New Sorento is almost £55k! Prices have skyrocketed in the last couple of years..

It used to be a general concept of Škoda, when I was growing up, to produce basically cheaper WV cars (as Škoda has already been acquired by WV at that time). Needless to say their cars got really popular on some markets and the company's been doing pretty well, too. As this video shows, they are still headed this direction as Kodiaq is just cheaper undercover Tiguan. And seriously wth is with that interior, WV?

I love your reviews Matt. But it's a bit misleading when you talk about fuel economy. To be fair, you really should try to get vehicles that are similarly speced out. For example, the Kia here is BY FAR the most powerful vehicle here. Not even close, really. So, of course it has the worst fuel economy. You should mention things like that in your reviews.

He should have waited for the SEAT Tarraco to make things far more interesting, since the doors and the centre console come straight from the Tiguan All-space. It will also have a starting price between the Skoda and the VW and is built by VW in Wolfsburg.

Average of course implies that 50% of people have more than 2 children :-) Anyway, as someone who has got a larger family these cars aren't that useful. You can't fit everyone in and actually take some luggage for a two week holiday. The only affordable car I've found which can do that is the VW Caddy. It's more van like but much more practical if you need to take six or seven people on a regular basis and even more so as the kids become teenagers. The other thing which worries me with these small seven seaters is how rearmost passengers fair in a rear end accident. Not well according to a Fifth gear episode I saw.....

Average family may have only 2 kids, but remember people have cousins and grandparents and friends so it's nice to have 7 seats in those cases
Despite it having Kia's aging CRDi engine the Sorento is the better all-rounder here.
I have a 2015 Kia Sorento and I love it. Yes, it's not the greatest on fuel but it suits the six of us perfectly. I would definitely buy another one in a few years.

@hakimn.6365 Hi, I can usually get around 700-800km on a tank of diesel. I do a lot of mixed type of driving. Mostly short run, but some regular long runs too. All on good roads too.
Kia has really up-ped its game. Kia Pakistan launched "The Grand Carnival" a few months back and it's been loved. It's actually an amazing vehicle

It isn’t really a fair comparison since VW tiguan allspace was base model(trendline) with bad sits and no digital counter, very bad looking outside... Skoda had LED lights and more options and Sorento had more options aswell(leather seats). Next time show us prices of current models so we can see the difference
Volkswagen should make a 7 seat version of the Touareg for the European market (i don't mean the Atlas, I mean the Touareg). I think it's stupid to assume that a small SUV like the tiguan, even on a stretched platform, will have a full-size/usable third row.
My thought exactly. Don’t understand why they didn’t bring 7 seats in Touareg, it would have made a lot more sense then experimenting with mid size SUB Tiguan.
The Kia is better in pretty much every measurable attribute. So the Skoda wins.... logic

Tiguan and kodiaq sorento feel like cars to drive that have der suspenion risen up so i bought a mitsubishi outlander feels like a proper suv 4 wheel drive and 7 seats.
I drive a 5-seat crossover and despite the fact that we have two kids, two additional seats would be more than welcome for occasional ride with grandparents or friends. Kodiak is a fantastic bet, however I regret it doesn't have the 280 PS 2.0 TSI from the Superb.
