Pro Kishore stand and words never change from day one regarding two country relationship should be restore ASAP is good for both country. Can one imagine INDOCHINA ( India, Indonesia and China) form a group combine population of 3 billions plus.All they need is to find a workable plan towards 2050. Support each other in all fields. It is a great interview and discussion. I am delighted to hear about India can really play a significant role in world politics and it is high time to seize the opportunity. I'd like to ask the Indian audience a question: If I make you a millionaire for life and for generations to come in exchange for 1% of your worst barren land, are you willing to take my offer? From being on PAR with India in the 1980s to having its economy increase fivefold over India 40 years later. Why? what did China do? I think the most important reason is China made peace with its enemies and rivals incl the US in 1972, Japan soon after, and Russia in the 1990s, etc. by making huge national sacrifices. By the end of the1990s, China has either resolved or deferred border disputes with its 14 neighboring countries, all except India that is. During the process, China stopped arguing with Russia over the disputed 350,000 square miles (910,000 km^2) of Chinese territory, delineate boundaries, and stopped claiming Sakhalin, Vladivostok, and many previously Chinese territories; Deferred territorial disputes with Japan; and even gave Vietnam Bạch Long Vĩ, an island that was undisputedly Chinese, and half of Baekdu Mountain and surrounding areas to North Korea. China also slowed down pursuing Taiwan until very recently. Can China and India find a path to resolve their border dispute? Well, ask yourself this question if you're an Indian: Do I prefer a piece of barren land in Aksai Chin अक्साई चिन to a national economy the same size as China's every year for the rest of India's future? given that India has already taken China's Arunachal Pradesh अरुणाचल प्रदेश and China has mostly kept silent about it and India's annexation of the Kingdom of Sikkim? Ask yourself if you are willing to give up your life for a piece of land your fellow Indians are not even going to live on after you donated yours. If the answer is no, then please don't expect others to donate theirs. Conclusion: no more human lives sacrificed for land, We need world peace, life is short, and it's not worth dying because of land. If there is anything India can learn from China. I think this is the biggest lesson: That you have to give up something in order to gain something, no pain, no gain. India will get nowhere before it makes the critical and crucial choice: Land or Economy, one or the other, not both. The saddest thing is most people in this world, especially in India, are fretting over trivials while missing the big secret to prosperity and tremendous wealth. I predict many Indians are going to start arguing with me for instance, to whom Arunachal Pradesh अरुणाचल प्रदेश belongs. If so, you obviously are not getting my message. I don't know about India and what it will become, but I know for sure that one day China will be so far ahead of the rest of the world that it will not even lift a finger to take back what is rightfully its own, including Taiwan and other previously forsaken lands from Russia, India, Japan, and the United States, b/c it has shedded its burdens and taken the road less traveled ≈ the road with least resistance. India has come to the crossroad again, none can stop it from choosing to follow the mainstream and travel with The Himalayas on its shoulders but I am simply here to point out it doesn't have to.☮

I have lived in China bro for 3 years from 2014-17. I don't have anything with the government but people in China were amazing, they were kind helpful and very mature and open minded. I think we should give Chinese people (public) the respect they deserve, I see so much hate on Chinese it hurts because I know so many good friends. Government is its own thing we should not bring two in same level

@@nsevv Yes surely Kishore gives China more credit than it deserves like calling CCP as meritocracy and longterm thinkers. Time and again proved that chinese beaurocrats are short term thinkers like one child policy giving way to two child giving way to three child policy. Also more recent, zero covid strategy. And more than this the biggest folly of chinese system is lack of transperancy at every level. The other day, I was seeing a video of forced covid testing in Shangai, where the guy who is taking sample was inserting the same cotton plug for consecutive people. So meaning there is no enough cotton to have a mandatory covid test for entire shanghai, but needs to done to show it to authorities above and so on.

Two voices of Reason. I learn a lot by listening
This is a critical and seminal discussion. This debate must be taken forward by the Print with many more discussions with further experts. We need to create public opinion on India taking a role commensurate with its true status and heft. India must play a much bigger, voluntarily adopted role in global theater. It is time we stopped being diffident and temperementally detached from taking up roles which the civilized world actually expects us to do. We can't complain that the world does not listen to us , we have to state our case and assume responsibility. The world will be grateful and relieved.
Kishore Mahbubani has said a lot in a few words. The visit by dignitaries and diplomats from the west is a welcome sign. The visit by the Chinese FM a bit of a surprise since it was without the hype. The Chinese position on the boundary being more or less the same as 60 years back has only one major factor which is different namely the CPEC. If the LAC is agreed to by both countries and peace established it would be good. However talks if held would going by past experience go on for a few years. The war in Ukraine may in the interim lead to a slightly different world. All countries including India and China are waiting before they take any major decision. However right now we are in a sweet spot and more importantly a foreign minister who is adept at handling the fast changing situation and doing a very good job

Threatening the global position of the United States as the number one economy will guarantee you an apocalyptic world where mankind is destroyed in nuclear war.
It's time we recognised our blunders re border with China and settle these issues via an open give and take mindset. Agree with Prof. Mahbubani on that completely.
While there is merit in what he said about resolving disputes with China, it's not that simple. China's support for Pakistan would continue to be a thorn in India-China relationship and until we work on both these fronts, we won't be able to reach those heights.
India is doing on her side to resolve the border issue, but the question remains, is China doing the same? I don't think so.
@@ArghyadeepPal China has always been keen to resolve the border issue. After the 1962 war the Chinese even offered a give and take they offered to give up claim on arunachal Pradesh and India should give up its claim on aksai Chin but any guesses who refused.

Finally a man honest enough to call out the anti intellectual movement in the US and the west . One suspects that one of the indicators of a fall of a mordern culture is the preference for ideological purity and ideological presentational beauty over excellence and Intellectual brilliance.

I am not sure there's much "honesty" involved. There's plenty of recognition and discussion in the US itself on the anti-intellectual movement. I have to say in the American context, there is a long tradition of anti-intellectualism and contrarianism. So these aren't unprecedented things either.
Very interesting discussion, particularly the dissonance in "who gets a sphere of influence and who does not". I believe the rationality and logic you posit should be the rule, exceptionalism trumps it every time regardless of which culture makes the play. Maybe on Vulcan, but not on Earth. As always, wonderful discussion and perspective.

Shekhar, thank you for bringing Kishore into this program! He is an outstanding intellectual who has a good grasp of the international affairs in relation to China today. India's most important relationship in this century is with the People's Republic of China!. At present China is the biggest trading partner of India and is the country that can help India rebuild its crumbling and outdated infrastructure. European Union or USA is not willing to or capable of helping India upgrade is infrastructure. In fact they have covertly and sometimes overtly tried successfully to prevent India's rise in the world. Indian political leadership's challenge is to find ways to work with China against the advice it is given by the bureaucracy (babus who are westward looking/us green card dreaming) who always tilt towards the west for obvious reasons! It is a sad reality that India's foreign policy is drafted with a form nod from Washington, DC and economic policy from New York Investment Banks.
My take is that India must not rush into any block treaties. All alliances should be handled bilaterally. This would give India the advantage to pick & choose what is good for them.

Very well advanced by Dr Kishore our option for settling our border issue logical and sound. There is no national advantage in military stand off with China . The existing LAC can be taken as basis of fin settlement . Ler our versatile FM take up this cue Indian Military Veterans
The problem with India is all political parties will rally the public to go against any border settlements ( of course doing it to their's political advantage). So no PM is dare to make the peaceful move. Only thing that China/India agrees on, is they were both looted by the British. Now how you settle with the recovered looted items?.
The loss of the U$ reserve currency status will also push US below India and ASEAN economies, US will try to start wars in the region to maintain their hegemony
Now that is a far stretch. Remember US is still the second biggest manufacturing powerhouse

Great that Prof. Mahbubani is trying very hard to be the reasonable moderator for resolution between India n China border impasse, other than economic n geopolitical objectives such as getting s UN permanent security seat.., however there are 2 critical imperatives that influence one another 1 the political leaders must be pragmatic to avoid using the convenience of EMOTIONAL NATIONALISM TO STAY IN POWER .. as Prof. Mahbubani stated ... that implied start to act STATESMANSHIP to claim its role as a world leader..( tell the truth that Chinese leaders has already offered twice to resolve the border conflict but Indian leaders ignored especially by Nehru !) 2. The public intellectuals must drive the narrative for pragmatism so the public space will have enlightenment about the pragmatism to work with China economically n strategically as neighbour one has no choice but to live with..( India need the finance to develop its infrastructures before it can expand it industries.. as Prof. Mentioned a mistake for not joining RCEP n lol the answer from this editor host is because of China, he is not the only one that have the same answer given ... Why so afraid of China ....just infer how China eventually can fight with USA starting with economics while military may come later..). In my opinion, India should start to be more active in BRICS, join RCEP n more participative in ASEAN n eventually the BRI ( before India could initiate it's own Indian Global Infrastructure Finance Initiative by learning how new concepts in multilateral relationship could be nurtured ..

Kissinger has said that US's mistake was pushing China and Russia together. US should have studied the differences between China and Russia more closely to drive them apart. Divide and rule, so to speak. This has always been in the playbook of colonialism and neo-colonialism. As long as India, Pakistan and China are kept apart, they will be kept weak and can always be played against each other. So, ultimately it's not upon others but yourself to overcome these differences. If the differences cannot be removed, at least ensure they do not prevent mutual benefits through cooperation.

India is going for bilateral pacts as opposed to multilateral pacts. The Chinese will dump their goods and destroy before the indian businesses can wake up and start seriously competing. Indian businesses today don’t have a clue how deep the Chinese manufacturing is and how much support it receives from the Chinese Govt. Indians need to build the capability much more before they can compete with China otherwise they will get squashed like bugs and hence they need to be protected for some more time.
