Police are forced to destroy three devil dogs every day, a TalkTV investigation revealed on Thursday.
Officers across England and Wales seized 3,823 dogs in the last year after attacking a person or being dangerously out of control on the streets.
And a record-breaking 1,230 dogs had to be destroyed by officers - up 143% on 2022.
Figures uncovered by TalkTV revealed 279 of the seized dogs were suspected of being one of the four banned breeds in the UK - Pitbull, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Filabrasileiro. Other attacks were carried out by regular breeds and crossbreeds.
Emma Whitfield, whose ten-year-old son Jack was killed by an XL Bully: "People at the time said ‘poor dog’ but they didn't see how it was acting after it had killed Jack.”

  • I disagree that education would do anything. People are rose tinted when it comes to their pets, as some are with their children/adult children when they have violent tendencies. My daughter was just waiting with me outside a Tesco Express. The owners weren't chavs, or hooligans. Their XL bully immediately started growling at her for no reason. Even whilst it was clearly staring at her, and growling aggressively, they treated it as if it were nothing. I believe this breed has a natural instinct to attack, and kill any living being it deems vulnerable, and smaller than itself. Just how a cowardly thug would behave in the human species. It's instinct. It doesn't matter how you take care of this breed, it has a natural instinct and temperament. The same XL Bully wouldn't have dared do that to the massive German Shepherd that we see every morning.

  • People need to remember that jack Lys was unrecognisable and had to be identified by his SHOE. That’s what the dog did to him. And people say it was unfair that the dog was shot!! As for the DDA 1991, it has kept the number of fatal dog attacks at an average of 3 a year, so breed specific legislation IS effective. It was only when American bullies started entering the country that the number of deaths started rocketing. The owner, training, education, all these factors play no role whatsoever. American bullies are pit bull crosses are are bred to attack and kill. We shouldn’t be surprised when they do.

  • We need a driver's licence to drive a car. If we mess up we get tickets for traffic infractions. We have tests & need licences for many things. Perhaps people need to have to pass a test to own & control a dog, (all dogs). And if they mess up; can't control the dog, don't pick up after the dog, etc then the licence could be revoked & the dog taken away. Perhaps then we would have people realize having a pet is a privilege & not a right & pet ownership comes with responsibilities & consequences.

    • Cars are a very different thing, they don’t have a mind of their own, a person is in control of their car, a person can never be 💯 in control (although I know that they think they are) of an animal, they can attack in the blink of an eye , the owner can’t read its mind, and, these dogs attack without any warning, I’ve seen them attacking countless times before and it happens so fast, there’s no chance of doing anything to stop it. And licenses would do absolutely nothing, the majority of people who own them are criminals/druggies, do you think they would get one, they don’t even get them chipped, and why should people, such as me, who has 3 small dogs, or why should ANYONE have to be scared to go out of their own house because a dangerous animal might attack/kill them ??

  • No, John Allison, they should not be treated as any other weapon, because they are not like any other weapon, a gun, knife needs a human to harm, kill somebody with it but these are animals, they have a brain, they don’t need any intervention from humans to kill somebody, owners don’t know what is going on in their minds or when they are going to turn

  • The 1991 ban did work for a while but , people started breeding pit bulls and passing them off as Staffies, and crossing them with Staffies, or American bulldogs which look very similar, I think the police would have found it very difficult to decide which was a pit bull and this is probably why it wasn’t enforced properly, It needs to be strictly enforced and kept on top of then it will work, the only thing is a lot more should have been included in the ban, that was prevent the same thing happening again and make it a lot harder to move onto another dangerous breed

    • doesnt change the fact that someone bought a dog and turned it into a weapon. ANY dog can be a weapon to a child and medium to large dogs as well as those running in packs present a real public risk. Im over this whole blame the owner not the dog. But what do you do with a weaponised animal? We need to build a better legislation to prevent dogs from being weaponised.

    • Almost all severe or lethal dog attacks on humans are by pit bull type dogs. There are no severe or lethal attacks on humans or other dogs by Beagles, Dalmatians, Yorkshire terriers, or grey hounds. Secondly, there are hundreds if not thousands of stories of pit bull type dogs who lived in loving home with owners who treated the dog in a good way, where the dog ended up maiming or killing another dog or a human. You are very misinformed. It's a bad dog breed because they were specifically bred to be amazing killers of other dogs and large animals. A bad dog with an incredibly responsible owner could be safe 99% of the time if the dog is muzzled and on a leash when outside and has around the garden a 7' fence that extends another 2-3' into the ground, but even then there's the 1% chance of the muzzle and lead snapping or the owner being distracted and forgetting to lock the gate, etc. and we all know most owners also of actual pet dogs are NOT super responsible , but with other dogs the worst that can happen is that they run away or go after a squirrel or steal a child's ice cream. With pit bull type dogs, the worst that can happen is that they break another dog in half, that they scalp a child or rip out your windpipe, rip off your limbs and eat your face, leaving you dead within minutes. You see this in pit bull type dogs that were previously seemingly nice family dogs... I have the right to NOT be mauled by any dog, and the only dogs that do this are pit bull type dogs l, these dogs are simple NOT pets. Why can't I have a tiger or coyote or hyena as a pet that I take into the pub with me or a public park? Why not, he's never hurt a fly!

    • And yet, there have been many incidents involving this breed which have been raised in loving homes and received extensive training and have still snapped and injured or killed people. Hell, remember that family in the US that had 2 bullies. The first dog snapped for no reason and attacked a young girl. This triggered the 2nd dog, which joined in. The girls sister came to help but was attacked too. Then, the mother was almost fatally injured trying to save her daughters, both of whom were ripped apart by these loving pets. But maybe you're right. It was probably the little girls fault, right?
