Also the fact that there is not a whole lot of things you can do with mermaids. They are just like normal Sims with a tail. I would’ve liked if they did with mermaids how they did with vampires. Too many oversights..

I feel like I'm the only one who prefers ts3 graphics. Ts4 is beautiful yes, but in a cartoony artificial way. Ts4 maps look like 2D cartoons for 5year olds. Ts3 graphics are actually realistic and on high settings are amazing

This is 100% just an overly expensive game pack.
I got The Sims 4 for free about a month ago off Origin. I immediately learned why. You get 60% of a game. That 60% is pretty damned good. The other 40%, and all the additional content, is very, very expensive. $40 for the bigger expansions, $30 for the smaller ones, and $20 for stuff packs is way too much. Even sales don't bring those prices down much.
I agree, besides clothes and *chairs*. It’s just like the Vampires GP with a new world and occult type but with instead mermaids.
I agree it's the only Expansion Pack I didn't buy as soon as it came out. It seemed the least expansive to me immediately. I could do more with Get Together or City Living, you know?
I honestly think people are buying the man hours spent working on expanding the capability of the engine that dictates what a sims DLC can do with the new job mechanic and the water redesign.

Cities skylines has become the best city simulator ever; planet coaster and soon planet zoo are imposing as the best park tycoon and zoo tycoon games; for now, the sims still reign as the best life simulation game but if they don't listen to their fans they won't be able to beat the upcoming rivals.

If the sims got improved even if it's just the pack contents and gameplays, they'll keep the monopole a little bit (so planet coaster situation) but if they stay like this they'll loose lots of customers (like with cities skylines)!

@Axel Drans They're concerned with performance issues and their target demographic. A lot of sims players aren't hardcore gamers that are gonna have brand new computers with amazing specs. And having features like that will cause performance issues.
I'm so disappointed there are no resorts/hotels. Personally my biggest let down.
Megan W Same for me, I was looking forward to that the most. I played this pack for 2 days then got bored because there was nothing left for my sims to do. I’m shocked at how little content this expansion has. Hotel resorts would have been the biggest part of this game. They really should have centered this pack around hotel/resorts & not the conservationist career. What were they thinking.

I can't even lie - I am utterly DISAPPOINTED in the fact that we don't get to explore beneath the surface of the water like we got to in the Sims 3! That was one of the features I loved MOST about the expansion pack! :(
They could've done so much with it too! Cleaning trash under water and finding hidden mermaid landscapes for example -- so many missed opportunities

Sims 4 is one of the biggest disappointments in the world.
Honestly I feel like Sims 2 has significantly better gameplay than the Sins 3. Everything was so amazing and realistic in Sims 2. Remember having to trim the shrubs in your garden, getting food poisoning from off food and teens randomly getting pimples.
Sims 2 ultimate collection is the best imo.

Oh my God I totally agree the off-grid stuff barely makes any sense and there should be a way you can use renewable energy. off-grid doesn't mean just living in misery. my Sims have an mood-lit where they're just tense or unhappy because they're getting a lukewarm showers and they still feel dirty, they should have a trait where you enjoy off grid.
Yeah also like...how come sims can't go get water from the ocean/waterfalls/etc in order to refill the laundry tub, or clean their toilets/sinks/off grid showers?! I was playing off grid and it was so frustrating that stuff had to get disgusting because "cleaning requires plumbing" 😒 Edit: just got to the part in the video where he says the same thing 😂
Yeah they really should've balanced the lot trait better and reintroduced the eco-friendly trait from TS3. If they'd done that + given mermaids an actual skill to master it would definitely be worth $40.

@@ravenaroteros for sure, i thought it was weird the off the grid lot trait was added in the patch. But also, I find it odd that the exp pack didn't add any new object for the off the grid trait, since it was marked as a feature for the pack. It's gonna be My First Pet Stuff all over again, things that should be in the expansion, but were taken off to milk more money. It just makes the expansion feel incomplete and definitely not worth the full price.

I feel like what the Sims needs at this point is market competition. Think about it - there aren't really any other games quite like it. Maybe if there was another life simulator that offered the same versatility and creativity, then maybe the Sims would step up its game. ...Or get upended by the competition, as was the case with Planet Coaster and Parkitect replacing Roller Coaster Tycoon.
The competition would need a fresh new angle. I don't want it to be "The Sims but by another company", however I don't want it to be "NOT The Sims" where they change everything. Maybe like weird aliens living on an interesting planet doing cool stuff? Or maybe something else...
@@theepurpletoaster You know, I considered doing it with aliens, with the premise being that they don't actually understand how humans work and that the game is their close approximation. But then that might be too alienating, ironically enough. Still, nonhumans acting human isn't a bad angle to approach it with.

The Sims have always been an exaggerated representation of daily human activity, why not take that to its logical conclusion and have actual aliens trying to replicate humanity? It's something I've thought a lot about and I actually have a character design that could work as a base for the aliens. (Less gleebleglorb grey aliens and more of a fleshed out alien race that accidentally picked up human tv and internet broadcasts through a wormhole.)

I remember my self never getting bored of the sims 3... it had so many mysteries and stories. Even the first expansion packs, the Sims 3 world adventures had such a huge inpact on my gameplay. So many mysteries to unravel. They need to focus more on the inside and not just the surface...To be honest I can't play a household for a long period of time cause I'm just getting tired and have nothing to do.
I agree, boredom sets in quickly with Sims 4. I end up playing multiple house holds with different households focusing on different things to not get bored.

Personally, I'm dissapointed beyond belief. This should have been a game pack. NOT an expansion. As the latter it is just WAY too lackluster. I wouldn't be so dissapointed if the next expansion pack wasn't months away now. Island Living just took the slot away and now the waiting time for the next expansion will start anew. THAT is the worst part.

They can do so much more! The game quality is so much better. The loading screens and rabbit holes allows people with weaker pc’s to play the game. If it was 100% open world with the same mechanics and graphics anyone without a GOD pc couldn’t play.

Couldn't agree more. The features they're trying to offer are promising and the world is beautiful indeed, but the gameplay just felt too shallow especially with the $40 price tag. No new skills, no fully-fledged scuba diving, and a dumbed-down lifeguard career. Also, I really wish for them to focus much more on the traditions and culture of Sulani like what they did with Jungle Adventure so the world feels more unique. I even felt that this expansion pack is almost comparable to Jungle Adventure, which is a $20 game pack. Anyway, amazing reviews as always!

I wanted so bad a hidden temple or a tomb where the elementals live; and we have to explore the cave and resolve something to be able to do so; also, I really wanted a secret mermaid grotto, or a place where they hang out, and the only way to reach it is max level scuba diving or being a mermaid! Fun fact, someone accessed the Sims 4 website and saw the list of Game Packs and Expansion Packs. Suffice to say Island Living was in both of them. It's not a glitch, as the Game Pack label and design were in the cover. Meaning this used to be a game pack in the first place.

Ughhhhhhhhh. Sims community, please heal my wounds. I usually only buy expansion packs when they're on sale.. but I friggin' fell for the hype this time and bought this shit. Played it for a couple or hours, and then I got bored as hell. Not until now the idea of a refund struck me, but guess what.. it has to be within 24 hours of the first launch. So now I spent 40 dollars on an expansion pack that I don't enjoy. And it is embarrassing because I work hard to earn my money and I am always careful to spend them on necessary things. I am so fucking mad at myself and on EA. Fuck this shit. Also, great review as always!

Don't waste hours shortening your life over meaningless shit like this. Buy all the TS3 EPs and SPs when they go on Steam sale (which has all of this holiday week). Join the growing number of Simmers who've deleted Origin off their systems for good. Launch and play your TS3 game without intrusive spyware in peace from Steam. Makes for a FAR more stable game experience. aka no CTDs etc etc

@@ExtraordinaryFate It wouldn't be if you installed Twallans (NRaas) mods. At least the top 4 aka Story Progression (superior to EAs in every way), Overwatch, Error Trap and Master Controller. All of which takes less than 5 mins to do. 100% of EAs buggy glitched mess from the vanilla game went away when I installed these 4 mods (and ultimately all of Twallan's mod suite). Also not sure what sort of hardware you're using. I have a top end system. But simmers with medium end systems never had game breaking issues running the base game plus all EPs/SPs. Especially with Nraas mods installed.
The only pack I paid full price for is StrangerVille - it was the only pack that was so unique that I was ok paying full price for it. I was disappointed in how piss poor they created the residential and community lots, but the world is pretty, the secret lab is cool, the weather is funky, and infected sims are hilarious. It is great there are 11 lots, though I wish there were more fishing lots. But I don't regret buying it, like I do with Parenthood, which isn't fun, just makes my generations unnecessarily tedious. Generations in sims 3 was better. I miss the prom

Apparently there’s a new indie life simulator that’s going to be coming out on Steam sometime soon. I think it’s called Paralives. Who knows, maybe it’ll give EA a run for their money

I created an insane amount of resorts and I still go back to Sims 3. Imo Sims 3 is still the best of all of them even based on the base game alone.
i mean it literally when i say i can’t play the Sims 4 for more than 2 hours. i used to play previous sims games for hours, would even fake my sickness just to stay home from school and play for all those 8 hours! lmao but what im trying to say is it gets boring.. you’d think with all these packs it wouldn’t be, right? wrong. things they add make the game fun & exciting for a couple of days but then it goes back to “ok, what now?” not to mention me waiting for everything to load makes me tired & not even want to play once it’s all loaded up, & also the reason why i hate leaving my sims house bc it takes foreeeeever to go to another lot for only like 4-5 sim hours & then loading back when going home... sigh. pls, we need to make the sims great again, it’s like a lot of the developers are in it just for our money..

At one point, The Sims 3 had three studios working together at the same time. The Sims Studio, the original studio itself; Maxis Salt Lake, who developed Showtime, Supernatural, University Life, and Into the Future; and another team dedicated to producing TS3 Store Content. Three teams working together at the same time, while it is good for pumping out content, like I really doubt any future TS game can pass the amount of stuff that was produced for TS3, it also probably caused some coordination issues between teams which lead to the issues that TS3 has. For TS4, I think it is a complete joke nowadays compared to the other older entries but I don't really blame the current developers for it.
It's hard to blame the team of developers when they're only doing what corporate tells them to. I'm sure they'd do more if corporate would allow it.
I wish Sulani had an underwater "world". Even if it was a place only merpeople could reach, I'd be pretty happy

really no new skills? That pretty much sucks. There should be a rule that all EPs require at a bare minimum certain things that GPs don't have, with skills being one of them

Its really sad when you think about how lackluster the sims 4 really is. I have a lol the game packs besides spa day, and all the expansion packs besides this one, and it still feels empty. It’s really crazy compared to how I only have 5 expansions to the sims 3 and yet it’s way more fun
Oakisap exactly! Plus EA pushed mods and CC more in the Sims 4 than what was in the Sims 3. So even when you don’t want to buy everything, you at least have CC Packs and mods to increase the experience even more!
It’d be nice if they could update the expansion packs themselves to be honest. Because you know they know lots of them are lacking or not well thought out for future expansions. 😒

Something really went wrong in early development, and now it doesn't feel like any level of expansion pack could make this feel like a complete game. Even without all expansions, S3 & S2 gameplay just lasts so much longer without becoming boring and feels like a complete experience.
Started playing sims 2 again with packs,and it feels endless, I didn't know how big it is
After having played with this pack for awhile it feels more like a stuff pack than an expansion, we got A LOT of items but the gameplay feels lacking
It definitely feels like a game pack, if they’d have added more content like being able to manage your own hotel/resort, underwater lots that you can explore for the diving skill and more in depth mermaids etc I’d say sure, but really you’re just paying $40 for the world of Sulani and not much else. It’s a nice pack don’t get me wrong but I feel like there should be more on offer for it to be an expansion pack.

I actually don't believe that University will ever come. Normally, it would be the move to release the base expansions first (Seasons, Pets, University, ...) and than fill the game with fun, but not necessary content, like Island Living and Stranger Ville and since they've moved to the fun-content, I actually don't believe that University will ever come around. Especially since they are releasing the Macig-pack next.

As someone who grew up in Hawaii there's definitely a charm to island life that I'll always enjoy, and this does seem like it has an absolutely lovely aesthetic, but maybe not for that price. Thanks for the review, LGR! Always look forward to your Sims coverage.

I remember when a pack announcement made me feel like it was Christmas. When the sims 3 island paradise was announced, I swear I watched that trailer almost everyday. Sims 3 had me excited because I knew that there was going to be tons of stuff to explore. I’ve really tried giving sims 4 a chance, but when they announce stuff, I don’t feel excited at all.
Most packs feel like tasteless cake, such disappointment when you "take a bite" from it even if it looks tasty

Every Sims 4 expansion have been watered down versions of Sims 3 packs. Get famous did offer something unique but was still weak.

But it didnt offer "content creator" as a job and video editing as a task you could do. It was quite unique, but still didnt go nearly as deep as I know they can (theyve gone far deeper with TS3 content) and as such its still not worth the money.

Nah, I always buy the packs on sale, ok for city living I really could have paid full price as it is kinda having lots more features than I expected...but the rest of it I waited for promotions (except vampires)

I stopped myself from buying all the packs before this one, but ocean swimming was too tempting. Last game I bought was the seasons expansion (And I didn't get any of the game packs except vampires, or get together and city living expansions) I really am enjoying Island Living, but the longer I play the more I realize there isn't a whole lot going on here lol Lots of rabbit holes which... Meh would be okay if this was sims 3, but to have no secret worlds and really limited options? Err... nahnah. Don't even have volleyball, houseboats or kneeboarding, or resorts, and my sim can't die in the volcano??? why even bother making it so sims can go up there. The world itself is pretty big, especially the ocean, but the lack of things to do in said ocean that don't involve lounging and rabbit holes is kinda sad. I think the main problem with the Sims Dev team besides their publisher >_>, is that that they sometimes overlook things. A lot worse and more noticeable than the other sims games. I get EA rushes them, but the fact they seem to take so much longer than Sims 3 ever did is a little perturbing. Maybe smaller dev team from half the devs that worked on Sims 3 getting fired? In which case EA is the real criminal here.

I actually think it'll be nice if the sims 5 base game has seasons, pets and university. But that's not going to happen since EA will rush everything and makes it so empty. I think sims 5 will be more dissapointing than sims 4 but we'll see
I don't think they're rushing shit. I think they know they don't have to put any effort into the game, so they don't, and people still buy it. Then they purposefully leave stuff out from the base game and add-ons just to be able to make more money by selling features that should already be available, later in a diff pack.

Isla Paradiso looks so much worse than Sulani. It's a bunch of generic buildings that could fit into any town, surrounded by generic textures. If you can't run everything on max, it looks horrible, and if you can run everything on max, it looks worse than Sulani. not that I'd waste $40 for little more than a half completed world.

Everyone thought the downgraded graphics and load screens just meant they were gonna fill the game with LOADS of content and bring us back to The Sims 2's entertainment LOL. I really have no idea why people are still putting money into this game, it is literally the most downgraded lack luster version of the sims ever. The developers obviously don't care... Anyone else noticing the expansion packs are getting smaller? Get Together and City Living offered so much. Cats and Dogs got away with it because they offered animals but every other expansion is meh.
city living was the pack with the least objects and gameplay actually. with get famous having the biggest variety of build and buy. cats and dogs was an equal EP. seasons focused more on gameplay than cas and build n buy. ISLAND LIVING offered the second biggest variety of BUILD n BUY and the BIGGEST variety of CAS. idk what ure talking abt luv

idk, get famous added a lot to the game in my opinion. fame, reputation, a lot of really nice build items etc etc. city living, i feel was a bit lacking. it introduced a lot of new things, sure but i dont agree that it offered as much as get together (build-mode wise, at least.)
From the way things are going with The Sims 4, I think we'll only get hotels/resorts through yet another game pack. I can already see them releasing a Get to manage hotels GM of some sorts so they can milk the cow even more...

Yay I've been excited to see this! Agreed on everything about off the grid. Was really hoping it would've won the community stuff pack vote and I'm glad we still got it anyway, but man it could be so much better. Hopefully they can easily expand it since it was put in a free update instead of restricted to Island Living
players should taking this expansion packs selling more seriously... I mean $40 for recycled concept in every sims game, BUT with subpar or passionless contents. I think EA will make another Sims game simply because the players are easily-manipulated goldmine, not because they want to expand creativity to the franchise. You can always complain about your dissapoinment, but this expansions practice is too precious to let go for EA and you will always fall for it.
It's almost as if the sims team learned from the criticism of the too linear storyline of Stranger Ville and totally over corrected in making it too simple. Either that or EA cut their budget or jumped the gun somewhere...

I remember when get together was originally announced, they ended up pushing back the release date by a few weeks. And that pack actually feels very fleshed out compared to the other ones

That's a pack that really deserves an update, like they did with the spa day game pack... Such a beautiful world! They could add exploring underwater and a skill tree for mermaids.
EA needs to stop copying TS3 content into TS4. It just makes it more obvious how much TS4 lacks in comparison.

No offence but this makes no sense. Sims 4 is supposed to be a SEQUEL in the Sims series so OBVIOUSLY it'll have the same stuff like the previous versions. I mean we can say that Sims 3 copied Sims 2 as well and the latter copied Sims 1, it's literally from the same company hence why it's called the SIMS.

Imo, I feel like the Sims 4 dlcs are honestly overpriced, since the content that Maxis and EA gave us are very lacking, heres how they should price their DLCs: Expansions: 20 Game Pack: 10 Stuff Pack: 5 I don't think they'll be losing money the community is still somewhat big

Souji Monaru the things people complain about will go to the sims 5 if they make it any time soon. The things people hate(rabbit holes, loading screens, ) those are the main 2 cause they annoy people so much. They added these to allow people with weaker pcs to play. I like some of this stuff cause it makes the game run smoother for me but I understand that people who would already run it fine get mad. Until there is a new age of computers are software they shouldn’t release the sims 5. I want the sims 5 to be a completely open world(like connecting towns and open oceans) like playing in a big world like Breath of the wild. This would require a new software and new computers to be able to run it.
It looks like the sims 5 is already on the works, and now that they made the sims 4 entirely for "weak computers" I hope they make the sims 5 entirely for decent computers.

ellure Let’s just talk about how most people who like EA and their shitty packs are BUILDERS who hardly ever go into gameplay. The Sims team mostly caters to builders, and there is hardly a good patch for gameplay.
It says a lot though when we see someone like Deligracy express her disappointment with this expansion pack. She was honest instead of keeping quiet so she can keep getting games for free and going to events, lol.

The Sims are so lifeless looking and their emotions and animations are so out of date looking. It's not interesting anymore. I really Hope Sims 5 goes much deeper in the AI.

Mermaids should've had more to them. Diving should be an active thing to do like in TS3 All the new careers should be active. There's literally no reason they're not. Like life guard... ocean swimming... why would it be a rabbit hole? I hate traits that are super tailored to the pack. I'll never use child of the ocean/island unless my sim lives in Sulani The world of Sulani is pretty but also lacking. I was so excited for this, and I'm really disappointed as someone who played the Island Paradise in TS4, they keep downgrading from the previous iterations that were great. I could've waited for this and not had a stuff pack. Or just have 2 game packs.
Compare this to TS3's Island Paradise. Sims 4 is a disgrace for this franchise.

@@sauldownbadman876 it's not that bad yes, but it is a huge step back. The game is just not engaging or complex enough. Until to this day I play Sims 3 and discover new things. This is how complex and well thought game it was. Sims 4 should have built on 3, fix all those technical issues and added more layer of complexity. Sims 4 is just too shallow.
And repetitive. How many times did they reuse this chemistry beaker animation? How many times do they use regular conversation animation in a unique named interaction with another sim? A lot!! I miss the days where I would spend weeks exploring content in an EP. Now it would take me a day or two to see everything.

I am St. Lucian (& Bajan) and it's not every day I hear someone outside of my family talking about the island. This just made me love you even more. I've been a fan for many, many years. I'm in love with the Sulani aesthetics and volcanic islands really do something for me. That said, it's incredible how much more came with Sims 3 expansions...

The most important things i want in sims 5 (maybe you can make a video about it?) 1. open world 2. sims 4 gameplay, which means: moods, multitasking, the building mode 3. careers like in the sims 3 ambitions and jobs where you actually do something like firefighter or life guard (sims 3), architect, singer, magician, acrobat, etc... 4. cars! and car animations like in the sims 2 nightlife, where sims actually go inside the car and freaking drive it out of the garage or lot 5. festivals like in sims 4 6. CAS like in sims 4 7. more customization options, like in the sims 3 8. Resorts, you can own or just visit them , like sims 3 9. purchase properties (sims 3) 10. earning fame by performing or by making videos about your career, like, you're a singer, you upload videos on how you sing, or give sing tipps, you earn fame, same with performing on stages, you earn fame both ways! singing, acrobatics, movie director or actor, etc... 11. University 12. more careers where we can follow our sims to their job and help them do it, like in sims 4 get to work or sims 3 ambitions and more things this is just my oppinion, i honestly love all sims 3 expansions and i think that the sims 3 is in some aspects a much better game than sims 4 even tho sims 3 is "outdated" compared to the sims 4, but i enjoy playing the sims 3 more than the sims 4, in the sims 4 you just sometimes feel you are limited and because of the "closed world" and loading screens if you wanna to go to just your freaking neighbour, this just gets really annoying.
