The Preds were shooting for rebounds, and he was knocking them to a teammate or into the corner to avoid another high danger chance. I think it was as much strategy as it was anything else. Nashville wasn't necessarily shooting to score on an initial shot all the time, from what I could see. They were shooting from the side because the Canucks were boxing them out, forcing rebounds, but DeSmith was kicking the rebounds out of danger. I didn't see him giving up rebounds right in front of the net for point blank chances last night. It was part of the game plan. The Canucks collapsed back and were in position to get those rebounds and get them out of danger.

    • Those who said that didn't watch it. The Canucks were buzzing for much of the game, just Nashville was still playing Meatwall in front of Saros and stepping in front of Hroenik shots. I guess they felt they didn't have enough bruises and broken bones yet. Canucks just have to keep whacking that meatwall with pucks and they'll wear down and lose a step, and the lanes will open up and an ice cold Saros will have to face some rubber with Canucks in his face. Nashville's strategy only works if the Canucks stop shooting before the Preds lose that step from the artillery bombardment. Even if the Preds were to squeak out a win, they'd hit the wall vs the Oilers or Stars or whoever they'd face in round 2 as they'd be limping into that series as the Walking Wounded.

    • I heard Demko was actually crying in Tocchett's office after he got word he was out for a few weeks again. Tochhett apparently told Demko his season's not done, because the Canucks will still be playing when he's ready to come back and then Demko decided to ride with the team to Nashville and give DeSmith a big pep talk. What leadership from both the likely coach of the year, and Thatch. Building a Thatched roof roof for his backup to shelter him from the haters so he could focus on just doing what he's there to do, make some big saves and all the routine saves. Leadership all around.

I didn't see if they were defensemen or not, but he had several Canucks helping him clean up the crease. That's the way they need to play from here on out. DeSmith left the net a couple of times and I thought he'd get burned, but he didn't. Good win for Vancouver, but Nashville ain't done yet. This is still a series...

Absolutely loved this game for DeSmith, and I’m sorry to say that although that was certainly his best effort and a great game I’m still not sure he’s enough going forward. I’m just glad he got to have a good game after all the post-Thatcher stress of that 2nd game. I don’t know how much more of that kind of punishment Hughes can take, either. • except for a game with a few lucky bounces and a short sighted strategy of trying to block all Canuck shots. by 3rd period game 2, I noticed they were starting to get tagged by some true blue Philip Hroenik cannonballs and several Preds were limping off the ice. It was then that I realized how short sighted that block everything meatwall approach could be as long as the Canucks don't let it go to their heads and stop blasting artillery shells at the Preds. Player pads are not meant to take 100 MPH slapshots -- that's what goalie pads are for. Players do too much of that and they'll have bruises and broken bones real quick. Between the shot blocks and body checks, I'm not surprised the Preds eventually lost a d-man to their strategy. Not that I like seeing anyone injured (except Todd Marchand), but it was to be expected with the high risk defense strategy they're running with.

    @user-dl3uo3we2z@user-dl3uo3we2z11 күн бұрын
    • I think most of the dumping on was mainly the fault of Benning offering him way too much money. For a guy who brings what Myers brings, a $6 mil cap hit stings. It got worse in the previous season in his pairing with OEL which was the worst d pairing in the league last year. But what a difference having him paired with either Cole or Soucey and a year makes! And a coach who figured out the secret sauce to getting Myers amped up to play again. Seemed like years of getting ragged on for that bad contract and a year with OEL broke Myers' spirit and now he's got it back. I was seeing flashes of it during the regular season, amid flashes of his early days habit of taking too many dumb penalties, but he seems to have finally figured out how to play it hard and physical without spending the game in the sin bin.

  • I felt after game 2 Nashville was getting too aggressive with the shot blocking against a team that can fire hard shots from many sources. That's when the lightbulb clicked on: All the Canucks have to do is keep basting their hardest shots. If for a while they hit Nashville skaters and don't get through, don't sweat it. Those cannons will leave their mark and wear the Predators down. Any time players who don't have goalie gear are making more saves then the actual goalie for a prolonged period of games, they're putting their health in danger and will slow down. Bruises and broken bones will force them to. Canucks just need to avoid the rut of fearing to shoot and passing all over the place looking for the elusive perfect shot. The shots will come when the Preds players all start hitting that one blocked shot too many and either start missing games to shot blocking injuries, or slowing down with too many leg bruises and are unable to keep up and the shooting lanes start opening up. Or the Preds will have to abandon that tactic and hope Saros can make saves after not seeing any rubber for several games.

And if you want to run and gun, well, Petey, Boesser, Miller and Hughes got some skills to flash and goals to score. Thatch or Casey will make enough big saves for you to outscore your mistakes and get the big score Dub. If you want to play goonery, well, Joshua, Myers, Zedorov and Miller can out goon and out skill when the goonery eventually results in inevitable power plays and, on that note, the Canucks can kill penalties and hurt you on the powerplay too!

Equipment has slowly caught up, when skaters bother to protect themselves properly, but with composite sticks adding even more shot power it gets crazier. Goaltenders have gone from the most dangerous position to the safest position. I've read interviews with goalies who just shake their head about the way skaters block shots with limited protection.

  • Hate to be a damper, but I think tonight's strategy can only go so far. Reminiscent of the Canadiens 3 years ago...with Carey Price. They were eventually badly humbled by the Lightning. Having only 12 shots in a game.....is just not a winning strategy in playoff hockey. WIthout over the top goaltending, this strategy completely falls apart. I predict the Canucks will likely be out by next round of playoffs. A teams like the Avs would have destroyed them in a game like this one. A very biased assessment, in my opinion. If the game would have been tied, I think the Canucks would have lost.

      @elephantrange@elephantrange11 күн бұрын
    • @@sonnyleprette7040 You obviously have the same bias. Any other team doing this stuff would be cautioned. A team with 12 shots in a game...and relying on stellar goaltending to save them.....is always bound to fail. They are facing the worst teams in the playoffs now. Just wait till the next two rounds. They will get whooped if they keep trying this stuff.

    • @@joeidaho5938 what does it matter how many shots they got in one game, how does that mean anything in future games. And again I fail to understand why you said biased cause it's just how the game went.

    • @@elephantrange That's just funny. You haven't been around hockey much...if you think this has not been done before many times. Canucks were just lucky to get out the other end....because this strategy fails often.

If they meet Edmonton next round gotta get through Nashville so just saying if they continue to take 5 or 6 penalties a game I can’t see it going well against the Edmonton power play. Feel sorry for Hughes he must be black and blue this morning they were smoking him pretty good.

  • You got a pretty low bar if you think that was a good game by the Canucks & EP. They were under siege far too often. Hughes was getting pummeled. It’s not a sustainable way to play. Boeser’s penalty was not legitimate. He had stick position & their player grabbed the stick to fall over it. Also Boeser & Miller were the clear standouts. Boeser made many intelligent plays throughout the game. Petey’s skating, vision & decision making is still subpar on the whole.

    • @@TheHockeyGuy They were playing with fire. Nashville was in their end most of the night & for the entirety of the 3rd. They just didn’t get the bounces but they will if they keep it up. The meagre shots on goal for the Canucks isn’t sustainable for winning hockey. Having said that I like the Canucks as a counter punching team, they often do better when they dictate play lesser than the opponent but last night was too extreme turtling for my liking

      @battistimo@battistimo11 күн бұрын
