  • Incredible to see more of our fellow GA fans’ raised beds! I’m noticing SO many of us are dealing with deer, it’s comforting knowing that I’m not alone!

    • Just a FYI about deer pressure...I spray diluted Liquid Fence on all my hostas and other veggie plants - any plant - that deer and rabbits like to feast on. Liquid Fence works! The initial 'odor' to the human nose fades in less then a day and I've found lasts as a foliar coating for about a month. If a rain fall occurs close to the end of that time frame, I'm out spraying again because I swear every critter within a mile radius knows my location. Liquid Fence is human safe. Hope this helps. Cheers to a great 2022 growing season!

  • Love, love the video with raised beds. I had 5 raised beds built back in Jan of this year, they are high and have a seating edge on them. I am 70 years old with a bad back and knees. I needed something that I can manage on my own. I couldn't wait to plant in them. Already have lettuce, spinach, onions, kale, carrots, beets, potatoes, planted here in zone 6b. They are up and growing. I also plan flowers for this area and have them started in winter sowed jugs. You have inspired me to get my yard, raised garden and chicken coop all spruced up and boy am I enjoying it. I am blessed as well as encouraged by all your videos with your precious family. You work hard, but living the good life. Blessings to you.

  • How gracious of you to acknowledge all of the submissions, including the ones that didn't make it into the videos. I was a Miss Pouty Pants for a few days after not seeing mine in the first one. It took me over two hours to enter, taking terrible pictures, struggling with the "how to" of converting photo files, and wrestling with the description. We had just put down our beloved kitty and so there were some tears when scrolling by her photos, looking for earlier shots of my raggedy-log raised bed. And while I didn't make it into this second edition either, now I'm grateful, because as you mentioned, there's a mess in the background! Mole-ravaged lawn and layers of gardening clutter on the back patio that has nowhere to go off-season - oh, my. I'm so thankful that you're making these videos, that you're sharing your subscribers' beautiful and inspiring creations, and for your beautiful remarks for each and every one. You are altogether lovely!

  • At 6:54, the person says that they put lumber and sticks and the water flowed right throught. Its because you're supposed to use wood that is a few years old, has been exposed to the elements and starting to decompose ("healthy" wood is way too hard to absorb water). So, you put your bigger pieces at the bottom and going up you add smaller and smaller branches until it's small twigs. Then you put leaves, whatever material you have like lawn clippings etc, then you add your final layer: compost or raised bed mix or topsoil or whatever soil you choose to use. And don't forget mulch 😉 ! For dry climates, it works best as an inground bed, with the top level flush to the ground level. That way water doesn't evaporates as much (no sides that dry faster than the center) and when it rains water flows in and rehydrates the land In wet climates you're trying to have water drain as quickly as possible so raised beds make sense but in dry climate you're trying to absorb/retain as much water into the soil as possible as the rain is so scarce that when it really pours it runs off because the soil is too dry to absorb it. That is one of the causes of flash floods... Sorry for the rant, i love this stuff 😅

  • Laura, I have you to thank for a super fun weekend in the garden. We were going to hire someone to move a pile of dirt, but after seeing you work with large equipment in so many videos, I decided if we rented an excavator for a week I could take my time figuring it out and if all I did was fill my garden beds, we would end up ahead. I was super nervous to get started, but with my husbands encouragement I hopped on… five hours later I had my three garden beds filled and my driveway clear for the first time in 9 months!! We plowed through two more large projects today and I still have five days left on the rental 😆

Raised beds will go in towards the end of summer so that they'll be ready to go for the 2023 gardening season. (lol) Always planning ahead. • How lovely to see all these beautiful gardens. Thank you for sharing. We are in the middle of filling our raised beds which have been made from blocks and we are cladding them with slate, so they are quite formal. Not growing veg but just the usual shrubs, small trees etc. We can’t grow in the ground as our garden has pipes running below it so we’ve had to get creative. One great bonus is that anything we put in already has height which feels amazing, especially as we can be a bit overlooked on our street.

  • Very enjoyable. A word of caution to all, including Laura. The gravel paths that look so great in the first 2-3 years will eventually sprout many weeds. May you learn from my experience. I constructed the paths in my 90' x 30' plot of timber garden beds by digging down 8-12", lining the bottom with landscape fabric, followed by a good layer of stone dust, topped by several inches of pea gravel. Over time, some garden bed soil eventually finds its way into the gravel. Weed and tree seeds travel in the winds, planting themselves in the gravel. Once there are many weeds, there are two effective solutions 1.) Unattactive But Environmentally-Friendly Solution - cover the paths with plastic woven landscaping fabric (weighted down with pavers) for a couple of weeks twice a summer, or 2.) use a blow torch to burn the weeds (uses fossil fuels and pollutes). With my new property, the backyard is ledgy, so it was necessary to build up a vegetable garden. We laid a level crushed gravel base before constructing the timber raised vegetable beds. This time, budget permitting, I will cover the gravel paths with pavers, stones or other material (recycled rubber walkways).

Now there’s 22 beds when we are done there should be 36. now we have Cedar grove and Redwood Grove, Pine grove yet to be built. It’s just hubby and I so hard to get them done. I am disabled and do my best not to be sick to help him.

  • I follow a channel Senza Tempo Cane Corso and she lived in Texas before moving to Virginia. She moved in Texas to a property that had never been developed. They have stone/rock..can't remember what throughout the whole thing with the odd pocket of actual dirt. She used all the stone they dug to make raised bed around the house and then made a round where she put a crape myrtle with sweet potato vine (which her chickens dug in the winter and found the potato's which I never knew was possible. She also made another round around another group of trees. It was gorgeous. And she also used two huge rocks to tip up and be in the back of a rose garden. May I say she took this property from trees, weeds, grass and rock to a gorgeous property and she is a single mom who had like 12 Cane Corso which lived in the small home. People such as Laura and Rachel (Senza) and those in this video who can see something blank and then make it unique and beautiful are so amazing to me.

  • The raised bed using stones starting at 12:21 is spectacular. We're dealing with mostly limestone with very little clay that passes for soil in our area of Central Texas. Of course, the home builder mixed in a small amount of organic material and then slapped Bermuda grass over the top. Ugh! The backyard is all Bermuda in an area of 70' wide by 32' back fence to patio, but it slopes a bit (downward from back fence to patio). We just want to grow some shrubs and perennials in the backyard, but even from planning it is daunting.

  • People have such amazing ideas! I know it doesn’t impact you, but would love to see a series on drought tolerant gardens / landscapes as that is what I am moving towards since Colorado is in a drought.

  • The first raised bed owner mentioned using mushroom compost, which is the only compost from Espoma in my area that I can find. Have you ever used it/what is it about Land and Sea that made you gravitate to it originally vs. other options?

  • How ironic, as the first fenced/enclosed beds were shown, I thought many of these might be inspired by “Erin/Impatient Gardener.” Lo and behold, @impatientgardener was next being highlighted!

  • Wow so glad I found this channel. You just changed my mind about garden paths. We had some tree stumps ground and have lots of wood chips. We thought we would do landscape cloth, layer of gravel and then top layer of wood chip paths. After seeing all of the gravel paths we decided to use the chips for mulch and go all gravel and stone edging around our 13 raised beds. Thanks for the ideas.
