1985 IROC-Z BUILD #4. Wiring Nightmare! Can I get everything electrical working??

2024 ж. 7 Сәу.
5 049 Рет қаралды

This 1985 Camaro IROC-Z has been off the road for over 20 years. In this video I install an electrical harness I bought off ebay since this car never came with one. Can I get everything electrical to work?
I also finish the exhaust off, it sounds awesome!

To all viewers the mid 80’s GM cars I worked for Oldsmobile train at the GM Training Center , one thing we guys in the class show then that if anyone mess with these vehicles we would walk away . Lee you got one issue corrected wiring is not bad if you have trained for it . Vehicles that have been hacked run ! Emission systems suck ! Lee I tell you what my boss toll me take your time & stop at times walk away ! Lee one tip you have GM vehicles look at the components the color will be almost the same ! Interior wires are orange & white . If need help ask I’ll assist you !

  • What a nightmare!!! I love 60's and 70's cars wiring is so much easier! You're a trooper on that one,I think I would have shut the hood,towed the car to the parts section and parted it out!! Yes,sad but that wiring is what got a lot of those cars off the road too,they had some electrical problem and they gave up! Can't say I blame them!

  • Many of the 80’s and 90’s Camaros and Firebirds up North here are completely rotten and missing their engines and transmissions long ago pulled for something else because the rust got so bad that the car could no longer be aligned or the doors wouldn’t close. That is when the driveline was ripped out of it. Like you said, most cars up here that came from the south or babied and only run in the summers might be original, lower mileage and good shape but most other examples still being daily driven are running on different engines and are a butchered mess for electrical systems, lots of Chinese replacement parts and sketchy rust repairs. The metal was thin and they rusted hard up north. Even a rough rusted up example still can fetch 3 to 4k now. A few years ago you could pick a rough one up for under 1k, they were considered worthless money pits to fix up because they had little value even if they ran and looked half way decent. Now they are coming back up in value slowly with this never ending inflation. Nice job getting it going and figuring out a lot of that electrical mess, that is a feat to do what you are doing.

    @keithroute8906@keithroute8906Ай бұрын
    • True. Plenty of non rusty ones down here in the south but they're mostly like mine and the parts cars I have, butchered, beaten and worn out interiors.

I cant bekieve you would have trouble finding a brain box if you have a vin for that vehicle ive sent away mine and had it reprogrammed to the specs and then use the obd sensor to tune it for carburetors they just require changing how ut reads the codes comouters can be fooled!! But, having seen you tackle this Iroc-z piece by piece you do pretty good kinda the MacGyver of Chevrolets!! Good used car salesman for sure !!

  • I feel for ya Lee... Years ago I had a '83 TA. At about 50K miles the computerized carb went out & the car would regularly stall in the middle of the expressway. They wanted $1200 for a computerized carb. I decided to bypass the computer, so I I got a new Holley 4B carb 80-82 pre computer & had a mechanic friend dial it all in & the car actually ran worse!! Yep you are correct, each year in the '80s the wiring, emissions, etc. & all the related BS. got more & more complicated‼

  • the only thing the harness from the left side controls is emissions . electronic carb, smog pump and the torq converter lock up pull the ecm and harness and get a non electronic carb. the computer control meetering rod and tps sensor are all specifically tuned through the ecm for fuel trim thus electronic carb will not run right without the ecm control. which in turn the need for non electronic quadrajet, all those loose wires are fo smog pump and vacum control selinoids.

  • Bro, trust me, you're beating a dead horse there. You at the very least will have a unreliable car, and more likely a car that will probably end up burnt to the ground trying to make either of those TBI, frankenstein, non appl. harnesses work! Save your sanity and pull all of that mess out. Save them just for connectors if needed, and get yourself a aftermarket 21 circuit universal harness that has EVERYTHING you need to wire that car up. pAINLESS makes just what you are looking for and you can get it at Jegs. Look at the 10101 Universal 21-Circuit Classic Wire Harness, GM-Keyed Column Ignition Switch Connection, Customizable. Trust me. no thanks needed, I just hate seeing you struggle with something that is not going to work there.

    @rickeyracer44@rickeyracer44Ай бұрын
    • I explained in the video why a universal harness won't work. It would be an absolute nightmare trying to get power windows, seats, cruise control, heat, ac, etc to work.

      @clunkersandclassics@clunkersandclassicsАй бұрын
    • @@clunkersandclassics Honestly, with these kits it's very simple Lee. There are circuits pre wired for each of those accessories, each of which has it's own labeled wire. No guess work figuring what wire goes where, and everything works correctly. I've installed dozens of them in cars just like with what you are working with (cars w/o original harnesses) Just trying to help bud.

Although here the ac delco is cheaper than motorcraft so if I don't use oil with it in it I'll use the ac delco additive in my ford. 14 bucks a bottle is alot better than 56. And who gives a shit on what brand it it. The diff don't care one bit.
