Just because it's an "act" doesn't mean it doesn't sell tremendously and have a place in this sport. You will see more and more Colby Covington's as time goes on, because heels sell.

Because he can speak, he can express himself, at a normal level. But he's hardly the genius of rhetoric you're suggesting he is. 12:40 for instance. "Focal group". Focal group. This from the master of rhetoric. No, he's no master if oratory. @dominickschrute3084@dominickschrute30844 жыл бұрын
    • @@dominickschrute3084 Chael is right on the money. Fight promotion is fight promotion doesn't matter if the outcomes predetermined or legitimate contest. You're still selling the same thing a fight with two men doing battle. You promoted it sell it to the audience the exact same way= when is it? where is it? who is fighting? How can I see it? and why should I care? You to give the fans someone to like and cheer for and somebody else to hate and boo. Muhammad Ali was listening to wrestler Gorgeous George piss off the audience and he was wondering why somebody would intentionally make people hate them. Then he looked around the arena and he saw it was full! Ali figured out that day he could make way more money if people are paying to see him get his ass kicked then to come and cheer for him. He proudly admits to blatantly ripping off Gorgeous George. I totally agree with Chael's other point. WWE has admitted it's a work and not real athletic competition. They sure as hell DON'T DO IT DURING THE SHOW on pay-per-views or Raw/SmackDown, blatantly pointing out to your audience that what you are selling them is bullshit. Vince McMahon would fire the person in a second if they did that.. You don't give out Colby Covington's gimmick while he's performing the gimmick live on air FFS You talk about it off air podcast. This is why so many people are disenfranchised with the current WWE product. You can't blatantly shit on your fans intelligence

  • I’m glad that Chael gives wrestling so much props. Yes, it’s a different thing…yes, it’s not a competition. But people tune in for the same reasons. You give them an investment, someone to root for, someone to “boo”, something to hold onto, something that gives them a break from their lives. From baseball to mma to wrestling, concerts and the movies, it’s all one in the same at the end of the day.

    • BJJ literally started because Gastão Gracie owned a circus, and would showcase exhibition fights between Japanese Judoka and local fighters, including wrestlers. The Gracie sons then learnt his fighting techniques and held their own exhibitions. Modern MMA and pro-wrestling have the same carnie origins.

      @VersaceJesus@VersaceJesus Жыл бұрын
    • Hes a smart business man. He and Dana both know theyre basically exactly the same business models..it's selling/promoting a FIGHT and attempting to get folks emotionally invested to spend money. Difference obviously being wrestling is predetermined/worked and laid out before hand or on the fly in the ring to get you to believe 2 men are truly beating the hell out of one another, while obviously MMA is legitimate prizefighting. But..Chael grew up loving wrestling and being from Oregon and close to 50 I assume he grew up on the legendary Portland territory back in the day where many a legend made names for themselves like Roddy Piper, Billy Jack Haynes, Playboy Buddy Rose, on and on and KNOWS that wrestling promotion is tried and true for DECADES and that'll work beautifully for true prizefighting which it does. Even Dana has states countless times he and the brothers modeled their business after WWF/E and Vince McMahon's brilliant strategy. Personal issues draw money...as they used to say In Memphis.

I get so excited when someone says they also watch MMA... but as you start pushing the conversation deeper, you realize most of the time people just watch the odd fight here and there. Or they only watch when their favorite star is fighting. It's actually pretty damn rare to find someone that tunes into most fights, and even more rare to find someone that listens to MMA related talks like this on KZhead. Hardcore fans know what Colby is doing, but your average person isn't gonna know jack shit about Colby, and every time he speaks, there's a bunch of people out there that are hearing him for the very first time.

Let me address that before you bring it up, by the way: I didn't say he was inarticulate, I said he's not the genius his fans would like to believe. For an MMA fighter he is remarkably articulate. Judged by the standards of the average person, he's charismatic and funny but you people are making him out as though he's Cicero reborn. He's far from it. But in the meantime, go grab a dictionary - whether online or hardcopy - and find the definition of "focal group". You won't, because it doesn't exist. He meant "focus group". Chael Sonnen epitomizes the mastery of showmanship in that any listening audience is under his complete command and is held enraptured by either his eloquent delivery of thought provoking musings, improv humour laced responsive rants that slay all adversaries, or searing comments of sardonic wit that humiliate any target he's chosen. Uncle Chael speaks...... people listen. Chael Sonnen, alone, is and always will be the 'master class' of showmanship in all of MMA....... Undefeated, Undisputed, never lost a round.

I don't like Colby at all but even I know that as a commentator representing the UFC, its extremely stupid to say something like what Rogan said and expose Colbys schtick to the casual fan who may have just been tuning in. People will argue that Joe can say what he wants, Chael cant control what Rogan says and Rogan's just saying what he sees etc but what it comes down to is what he said was unnecessary and set back the image Colby's been portraying, which hurts his business in the long run and the UFC's.

    • It’s just about promoting. Pro wrestling has always been about imitating actual fight promotion. Real fighting was about larger than life legends and fake feuds before WWF ever existed. Selling the fight is where the money comes from.

      @jclark1693@jclark16935 жыл бұрын
    • J Clark There were some REAL feuds too, though. Tito and Ken, Wanderlei and Rampage, some random rivalries. Back in the day, people used to tune in because of a particular fights excitement, not because of WWE-esque trash talk. The sport hasnt evolved, but the fans have. Its still about proving who is the best and exhibiting skill sets, but now the heirarchy of a division is leapfrogged by the guy who talks the most shit. Its as if cringy is synonymous with popular these days and thats just plain wrong, subjectively. Objectively, Chael has no data to back his "15% vs 85%" claim, as that can only be speculation due to not knowing the amount of PPVs a particular household buys. Ever heard of bootleg? Some people havent bought a fight in years, yet still watch them somehow, especially those who only tune in once every 2 years to see a certain Irishman....so how exactly can Chael assume Scott or Dana have the clairvoyant abilities necessary to arrive at the conclusion that the predominant driving force of mma fandom is casual? Im sure it is, but 85%? I smell nonsense.

  • I think the easiest way to find out that people actually DON'T know Colby is playing a role is the fact that so many people get very mad at him for acting this way. If people truly knew this was a shtick, a lot more people would just roll their eyes and move on. He gets people annoyed with his manipulation tactics and makes them want to watch him lose...and even if they knew Colby was just gaming them, the more the point of "he is just gaming you" comes up, the less likely they are to slip into making an emotional choice to buy a PPV just to watch Colby potentially lose.

    • I disagree,of course it's just a shtick,any fool can see that,but inreckon the irony of his shtick is that it works because he is so bad at it,I don't dislike him cause of the "mean" shit he says and does,I dislike him cause every time he speaks he is clearly so fake,it's like watching a TV show where the acting is terrible. His plan has only half worked tho,make us hate him he had managed,make us care enough to buy his fights he had not,if Woodley beats him he will be hated and not even have made much money out of it

    • i think a lot did indeed roll their eyes and move on considering there were no eyes on the PPV

    • I think the fact that it's an act, and that he is so bad at it, makes it worse. Where I live some media conglomerate bought the UFC broadcasting rights, making it impossible to buy individual PPVs in favour of a subscription service that includes them all. So even if I don't watch the covington cards, I'm still paying him and that pisses me off.

    • SurriSama no they are mad at the things he say just because we know something is not real dont mean it wont effect ppl. Come on now the movie industry is built on this principal

  • "Ironically, chael goes on a tirade about "joe exposing the business" when in reality, chael is exposing Colby himself. Funny chael doesn't realize that if he never addressed it, nobody would think of it. Like I said, If you are a 12 year old boy and thought Colby was real, what Joe said wouldn't make you realize what's going on. However, if you then watched Chaels podcast, you WOULD. Funny irony here." - @Revoltub

    • Jeff Dredd was thinking the same thing. He gave me a way bigger insight into the business than Rogan ever did. Good for his podcast that this blew up but not good for his point. His pod cast might be mainly that 15% [wich is probably decreasing] but now he is reaching Schaubs 85% and giving them MORE info

    • To be fair, the difference is people who listen to Chaels podcast are the "insiders"... Rogan on the ppv is a different story

    • f r EH - d ee V I have no love for Rogan, he's a flip flopping sell out and I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw his gigantic boulder head. The point still stands. Also it's in quotations and not signed by me because the comment is from revoltub on Sherdog, I just felt like it needed to be read by the morons like you more than the Sherbros.

    • No Chael is calling out what Rogan is doing and has to go into detail because other people are ridiculing him.
