Your videos have saved my A*$ a couple of times now. Thank you
Great videos mate. This sort of stuff helps me with my truck. Keep it up
You inspire me my friend
Brother you are good at what you do. Keep up the good work
Great work brother 👍👍👍
Great vids mate. I got disc brakes on the CH I drive. I fucked up and wore pads down and wrecked rotor. Today I pulled rotor off wrecked truck, tomorrow Im putting on the one I drive. I dont have torque wrench to do lock nuts on axle. I was thinking tighten inside nut till zero movement, then back off a 1/4 turn. and tighten outside lock nut very tight. Probably wont hear from anyone before tomorrow, but would still love feedback. Im only a driver, definetly no mechanic😂
you make great videos not too much talking thank you
Smooth operator/ mechanic
Thank you
I love the video
Thank you for it
I don’t mean to laugh but I did when that bearing fell apart in your hand. Great videos keep on keepin on.
A tip: you can watch series at Flixzone. I've been using them for watching a lot of movies these days.
@Briar Kashton yea, I've been using Flixzone for since november myself :)
like your vids your doing ! im enjoying learning about working on semis ! I always wanted to learn more about working on them ! I been driving close to 30 yrs so I know a little bit about them but not as much as I like to !
glad you are enjoying the video's. 30 years is a lot of seat time. its always great to try to learn more. i feel like having a bit of mechanical knowledge does help one to be a better driver. it is great to always try to continually learn more.
yep it really does help ! thanks for sharing your knowledge ! I try to be as hands on as possible !
I worked at Kenworth dealership and I loved doing wheel seals and axle work. It always got pushed off on me.
Do axle shafts have to be indexed when removing and installing?
I like watching your videos. Keep up the good work mate.
thank you, glad you are enjoying. I appreciate the feedback.
Lppll
What size socket did you use to remove the locknut
Any tips for removing and installing races on aluminum hubs? I've only been a diesel mech for about a year, and my mentors always seem to tell customers that we cannot take out the races on aluminum hubs because you have to heat/cool them and that it's a lot harder than steel hubs.
Great
thanks
What are the most common locknut socket sizes to buy?
Never thought of that. The tang ting is better because it will keep the front nut from turning. Don't even see the point in the ring with the holes.
I wouldn't mind working with you.... I'm sure I would learn a lot.... sometimes I wish the videos were more in death or a little bit more informative but overall you do a great job not talkin junk cuz you got any knowledge of a big truck you understand what you're saying there are some things that I'm not so good on but I do watch you and I subscribed to your channel...
i try to find the balance between making a video move along quickly and still giving good helpfull information. sometimes easier said than done.thank you for the feedback glad you are enjoying the video's
Man no worries...u good ..keep doing wat u do...
Hello chip. I'm from Malaysia. I love this job.. I can do repair any Japanese truck. Can I working with you.
Hey ezrider quick question for you I was changing my drive tires on my truck and I took of the brake drum I had to cage the brakes because i have my abs modulator valve off the truck so i could not just push my brake button In. One side changed out smoothly but the other side of the rear diff the drum was stuck really hard with rust and debris I had to use my tractor with a chain and hammer it out now the new one is half way on but it doesn't go in any further and it same one as the old one plus the s cam is in the open position with that brake cage
might have to back the slack adjuster off a bit. i assume the drums are hitting the shoes and not getting stuck on the hub?
here is a video i did on brakes that might help you if you haven't seen it already. kzhead.info/sun/fax8oNGJgXeGlZs/bejne.html
Hey. Brother. Just wondering. What. Size. Iron. Socket. You. Use. To. Take. Off. The. Inner. Nut. Of. The. Hub. Thanks again. For. The. Videos. They. Are. A great. Help. Blessings upon. You
i wish i knew off the top of my head. truth is iv got a pretty good assortment of axle nut sockets iv collected over the years i rarely ever look at the sizes i just grab the one that fits. i know that's probably not much help to you.
Maybe a 3 1/4 or 3 3/4 they vary. Good to have several
What size was that hub nut socket? So I can find out the right size for mine. Thanks
i believe these ones were 4"
Basically same process for the front axle then? Seems simple enough. I’m going to do my king pins after watching your king pin video. At the same time, curious as to why the hub needs to come off for the king pin job. Doesn’t seem to be in way of anything
the process is the same for the front drive axle wheel bearings. on the king pins generally the hub has to come off to remove the s cams so you can get the whole s cam assembly out of the way. it could probably be done leaving all that in place but i find it best imo just to strip the wheel end all the way down.
Ezrider92356 copy that and makes sense that’ll give me a good reason to just replace the worn out s cams anyhow. Thanks brother
What life to expect from hub bearings normally, and how long semi truck differential last on average?
With proper matinance 1million+ miles your normally have done wheel seals a few times by then though.
How tight do you torque inside and outside nuts?
torquing procedure will go 200 ft lbs while spinning the hub, then back off 1 full turn then torque to 50ft lbs while spinning the hub then back off a 1/4 turn and line the dowel up with the closest hole in the lock ring. generally favor looser between two holes, also sometimes flipping the dowel lock ring will get you closer to a hole. then the outer jam nut is somewhere around 300-400 ft lbs without the tang ring like i added in this video or 250-300 is acceptable with the locking tang ring. i would recommend always using a tang ring even if there was not one to start with, iv seen a lot of jam nuts come off when tang rings are not used.
My bearings have 1.6 mil miles on them no play,do they ever go bad without play
they can, typically high millage bearings like that i tend to see some flaking on the bearing surfaces.
Can you go into detail more about removing the races. I saw you weld real quick then just tap them out. I know it's more to it than that lol
There really isn't much more to it than that. The welding a bead on the race is not necessary but does make it easier. Then just drive the race out with a hammer and punch. Be sure to drive it out evenly moving from side to side. Be sure to give it a good hard smack every time. Hitting it softly isn't going to do anything and take forever
Ezrider92356 knocking the races out on the steers is a bit more difficult than the drives, since the hubs on the drives have a cut out in them where you can hit the races. Also not a good idea to let the hub drop after sliding it onto the spindle. That can damage the seal. Another good idea is to get some sandpaper (300-320 grit) and polish the areas on the spindle where the bearings ride. Just my 2 cents. All in all Good video keep em coming
Hi what's is the size of the locknut socket
I believe both inner and outer nuts we're 4inch on that one 3 7/8 are somewhat common and 3 1/4 lock nuts on trailers are common
Does anyone have the habit of putting bearing oil in the filler cap and spinning the axle around a few times and repeating by adding more oil, so the bearing gets nice a lubricated? I always let mine soak 5 minutes or so and top the bearing oil off.
What is the part numbers to all bearing & race ? Thanks
there is many different rear ends that can be on these trucks and they don't necessarily all use the same bearing part number, call a dealer with your vin and ask for a part number or pull the bearings out and cross reference them.
The key to all the troubles and having a third member in the differential cannibalize itself was because someone left out the tab washers when servicing the rears last time around. That’s nuts! No pun intended.
Separate issue not the cause of the initial failure
@@Ezrider359 Thank you for that response. I was trying to figure out what the initial cause was on that third member failure. Maybe it was just a little abuse by the previous owner. Did you figure it out EZ? Do you have any theories? I know it has been a while.
You make it look so easy to fix but that was a major failure.
It was driver error on my part. Frozen drive axle brake rather than getting out and beating the drum with a hammer I tried to rock it a little with the engine to pop the brake loose but broke the rear end instead.
Is there other way to remove the race from the hub with welding?
Welding isn't nessisary just makes it a little easier
@@Ezrider359 l am trying to remove the race in the steering axle hub but l don't have welder. Does hammer and flat Philips works?
A punch or drift would be preferred over a screwdriver but yes smack it like it owes you money alternate side to side
@@Ezrider359 thanks you sir
Where did you get the big socket to remove the locking nut?
napa auto/truck parts stores generally have them on the shelf ask if you don't see them they may be behind the counter. that's where most of mine have been purchases from. if you have time to wait for them if you search ebay or other places on line for "wheel bearing axle nut sockets" you should find a number of them. generally when iv bought most of mine though its when i have already started taking something apart and realize that none of the ones i have fit that particular nut. then measure with a set of calipers run to Napa get one and your back to it in 30 mins. iv seen them come up in local classified ads as well.
So there is different sizes of these nuts? I haven't started taking mine apart yet on my kenworth, just making sure i have my ducks in a row before starting.
smart man its always nice to have everything you need on hand before you start. you may call kw and ask them what size you will need. there is a chance they could tell you the wrong size though. sometimes the outer nuts are smaller than the inside nuts. so you may need two sizes sometimes someone may have replaced the nuts at some point in the trucks life and used nuts with a different outside size. there is also a different style nut some people re-fit with esp if the threads have gotten a little buggered at some point in its life that rather than being a sandwich assembly its a thick single nut that has a inner snap ring assembly and kind of a toothed mechanism inside. that locks everything together that would take a different socket as well. there are probably 4 sizes of these sockets that i use most often i would tell you what sizes they are but the sizes are stamped really small on them and i don't think iv actually looked at the size sense i bought them so i don't know off the top of my head what size they are. then the ones for the steer axle are quite a bit smaller than the ones for drive and trailer axles i actually have a jumbo 1 inch drive socket set that goes big enough to cover those ones there probably somewhere around 2.5 inch where drives and trailers are probably in the neighborhood of 4 inch. you can also get them off in a pinch with a hammer and chisel but i would not recommend that for re-assembly. but you could get it off like that to go run to Napa and match them up to sockets
Thanks for the info. Will napa have the seal punch as well?
they may. i would call and ask, being that i generally only work on my own equipment i personally don't own any of the large seal drivers, each style seal has there own seal driver and there is several different style seals that can fit one application. in this video i go over in a little more detail on getting the job done with minimal tools kzhead.info/sun/p7x7paWgb56QfGg/bejne.html this one was on a steer axle but its all basically the same.
too bad we're so far apart, i need a bearing on a front wheel of my Freightliner rv to be changed !
Shit, everything fell apart. Scary
i was curious how long it would take for someone to comment on that...lol this is why you never ignore a leaking wheel seal. often times it can be the first indicator you have a bearing problem.
I changed the seal on mine but it still leaks . I should go ahead and replace the raced and also the bearing as you did . Love the video
if its still leaking your have to pull it back apart and try to examine why it is still leaking. it could be improper bearing pre-load. or if your using a 1 piece seal if there is a grove worn in the axle where the seal lip rides you may need to use a 2 piece seal or a seal that uses a wear sleeve. or could be a issue with the bearings themselves. all my equipment has some miles on it so a lot of times when i do a seal i just do bearings as a preventative. not always but most of the time. by the time you tear it all down for a seal all the labor to change bearings other than the races is already done.
