What Army Snipers Go Through At Sniper School | Boot Camp | Insider Business

Before they become snipers, all students must graduate from the US Army Sniper Course, a seven-week program that teaches soldiers from the Army and National Guard essential skills in fieldcraft and marksmanship. Insider spent two days at the US Army Sniper Course inside the Fort Benning military installation near Columbus, Georgia, where we observed various classes at different stages of training.
Just 288 students are accepted into the Sniper Course each year, and roughly half pass the course and graduate. Students learn to operate several weapons systems and must master hitting targets up to 1,100 meters away. Prospective snipers learn how to create ghillie suits, a type of camouflage clothing that snipers use to blend in with their environment. They are educated in a wide array of fieldcraft skills, including target detection, range estimation, and stalks, where they must stealthily move through wooded terrain without being spotted by instructors. Those who are able to graduate from the course could be deployed into combat as snipers immediately if necessary.

  • I will never forget basic at Ft. Knox, 1973, when they took us out to the sniper course. Drill sarge said to look out across the field and woods and identify the snipers. Well, nobody could identify one. Sarge had them come out and damn, 5 of them came out from their lairs, in the trees, on the ground. One was within 10yards of our position.

Just think: One well-placed bullet can change the course of a battle, a war and save thousands of lives. Maybe hundreds of thousands of lives. As Pvt Jackson -- the sniper in "Saving Private Ryan" -- said to Captain Miller: " ... if you was to put me and this here sniper rifle anywhere up to and including one mile of Adolf Hitler with a clear line of sight, sir... pack your bags, fellas, war's over. Amen."

  • I served as a Sniper in fortnite battle royal from 2017-present. It was usually just me and three other comrades. What they don't teach you in Sniper school is how to take a shot when you don't have a spotter. Furthermore, the ability to take a shot while the target is in motion and jumping is also absolutely necessary(usually the target is 200m away or 2m away). You can only attain these skills through practice and experience. I highly recommend deploying to Pub G battle royal or COD battle royal before attempting fornite as in fortnite there is almost no camouflage unless u hide in a bush or something or disguise yourself as a prop.

  • I give these guys and are past service men & women so much props! I could never handle such situation or have the patients for it. The first time I experience a sniper battle is playing the video game "Metal Gear Solid 3" back in 2004. There is a boss battle with The End who is a grandmaster sniper in the game. The terrain is huge and he camouflaged so well. When I first fought him, I had a lot of help thanks to Kojima making it easier for players who don't have the patients to deal with him. The 3rd time I fought him, I decided to fight like a real sniper battle and oh man, was it really darn hard to find him. Without using the konami code, killing or capturing his parrot, the directional microphone, and thermal goggles, it would literally take hours or days to kill him as you rely on his footsteps and lens flare to give away his position. For everyone that made it to sniping class and graduation, thank you very much!

  • Some of these scenes show a device attached to their rifles above their scopes. That is an AN/PSQ-23 laser rangefinger, made by L3/Insight Technologies. This has a rangefinder with a range of 6 kilometers (way beyond effective range of sniper rifles) and includes a digital magnetic compass which also shows elevation in addition to azimuth. It is MILES system compatible and can be interlinked with other equipment to share targeting information. A neat piece of gear, and only costs roughly 15,000 dollars apiece.

  • I know no one asked for my opinion, but I actually went through a shorter course, called MTT. You get the same certificate at the end of it. I thought I went through the easier version because it was shorter, but some of the NCOs in my platoon said MTT was harder and that they had guys fail it. Apparently the longer course allowed them to have nights and weekends off, time to really study on stuff they may have been weaker on, whereas the version we went through was non-stop with no down-time. They actually even had MTT in Iraq so they could produce sniper qualified soldiers while overseas, and one of my friends got to go through that. ARMY snipers have also gone through Marines Sniper school and vice-versa, and there's also a course called SOTIC which is sort of like a sniper course for special forces soldiers. If you were stationed at Fort Campbell, sometimes they would have extra slots and they would allow soldiers from the 101st to go through it alongside Green Berets. The best training I got was at the unit-level though, and during field exercises. IDK how much of it applied to the real world since we were fighting in mostly urban areas, but it definitely built my confidence, changed my mindset, and really helped me with range estimation and how to gauge wind at a distance by looking at sheets hanging out to dry and stuff like that.

  • I went through a similar course in Security Forces training. I grew up on a farm shooting and training in marksmanship since I was 6 years old, and I'm still a dead shot. When I came into the military, I scored so well on the range that got expert marksman with multiple weapons. Not just marksman, but Expert marksman. My brothers all had similar training at home, and the Marine Corps recognized just how good of a shot that my oldest brother was. They offered him a 6 year job, to be a Marine Corps Sniper Trainer at Quantico for his entire 6 years. He never stepped foot in Vietnam. But every sniper he trained went to Vietnam, and a few to Cambodia. My next older brother was also a dead shot, and he went into the Army. Instead of taking advantage of his skills they made him an MP, and he hated it. He finished his contract and got his Honorable, and got out and never looked back at law enforcement like my oldest brother and I did. These special forces guys and snipers are the top of the line dead shots, and there's almost nobody on earth who can do what they do. Kudos to them.

    • You guys don't know how special you are. Nothing beats 10's of thousands of rounds as the brain develops. I imagine there are some neurologically gifted freaks that can get results, but practice produces a well-rounded mind.

  • Congrats to that female sniper graduate! Out of 2,000 active U.S snipers, she's the only female. That's insane

  • I was in the Air Force and I remember when I had to go through ground combat training to be security police. It was much harder than basic training that's for sure! Once we finish that lackland Air Force Base in Texas we then had to go to camp bullis army base to train. It was so much fun but very vigorous and demanding at the same time!
