Hi Brother, you produce a great informational videos. Thanks for sharing 🇺🇸
Those are great tips Jeff , there's nothing worse than trouble shooting engine problems, fixing stuff is easy knowing what ti fix is the problem lol
Again, great video Jeff. Your the MAN :)
I'm about to go do a possible trade with my outboard for another and this video really helped me figure out how to do the compression test. Super awesome! Thanks so much.
Awesome. Glad it helped. I appreciate you watching and taking time to comment
Great video and great info...definitely something all boater should know how to do.
You are correct. That is part of my routine service. Thanks for watching and commenting
Hey Jeff, I appreciate you showing us how to do a compression test. Been having an issue with my motor lately and feel like its a carburetor issue. However, I needed to check my compression and was clueless till now about how to go about doing it!!! Thanks brother!!!
Thanks brother. I appreciate you watching. Good luck.
Great video thank you.
More great information my friend. Great video.
Thank you sir I appreciate it
Thank you for these videos, I inherited a boat from the 70's that's been sitting outside for god knows how long, it has a evinrude outboard engine. I know nothing about boats but I've been attempting to fix it up, this video has been super helpful. Thank you or making it
Good luck. Thank you for watching and commenting I appreciate it
Awesome video! Thanks
Hey Jeff please make more informational videos. This is going to save me a lot of money and for a hand on person like myself I would have loved to see how you broke down the carbs.
Yes sir. Thanks for commenting I appreciate it. I’m in the process of building a shop now. Hopefully I can get back to it soon.
he knows a lot ... thanks jeff
Thanks for the video!
Yes sir. Hope it helped. Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it
Your party barge looks to be a little under powered with only a 25 hp motor. Thanks for a demonstration of the use of the remote starter. I will be using your remote starter method to check the compression on my year 2000, 6 cylinder, 2 stroke, Johnson. Haven't used it for about 2 years and want to get it running by next spring to catch some bream.
Jeff, have posted a 3rd video one the carberator prepping for a motor that has been sitting? First two video were great info for prepping an old motor.
I had a computer issue and lost 3 more videos on that motor. It’s still running great and with perfect compression. It actually got a little better after about 5 hours of use. Thanks for watching I appreciate it
Hello. How do I send an email? My questions are too long to type out here. Great information in the videos I have seen. Thanks, Chris
Great videos Jeff!!! Did you ever shoot another video showing how to clean out the carbs?
I did but I lost it due to copyright music lol.
Thank you for watching I appreciate it
Hello Jeff my engine has been sitting for 3 years it’s got very little hours same situation as yours my wife got sick and we put the boat in storage. Should I do the sea foam compression test and carburetor clean? Mechanic told me it wouldn’t start it needed a lot of work and then I found your video thank you so much
I like to do that in all motors that’s been sitting a long time. It can’t hurt and could save you some headaches later. Thank you for your kind words and watching. Thank you
thanks
Anything thoughts on checking the impeller on an engine that's sat like yours? Got a 15 hp four stroke that's got barely any hours on it and sat for 2 yrs. Like you, don't want to turn it over. I've be told that the impeller can be stuck and tear apart from sitting so long. Plus if it does, it's not sending water through the engine to cool it, adding to the danger. Any other advise appreciated. I'm in the same situation as the person you got yours from. Wife got sick and just didn't get the boat out. Need to sell it and don't want to wreck the motor or screw over a buyer. Thanks very much.
2 years setting ain’t real bad. But I’d still take a few precautions. As for the impeller. I’d put it in water. Let it set just a little then bump the starter or turn the fly wheel with rope slowly. To give the Finns time to break loose if they’ve stuck to pump shell. Then you should be able to fire it up. Just make sure she’s peeing. Good luck. I hope it goes well.
@@bowl830 Sure appreciate the response. Might give it a hand turn to try to feel if it's stuck and go from there. If it's good, should take it in for a tune up, since I'm not mech inclined so much, just to make sure it's in good order. Thank u again. Much appreciated!👍
Thanks for your informative videos (it would have been great if you hadn't lost the carburetor videos - would have liked to have seen that process too). Regarding the compression test, other blogs say to do it with a warm engine. Your video did not say anything about the engine being warm before doing the test. Any comments? Thanks.
Normally I do the test on a warm to get a top line measurement but the biggest factor you look for is are they all close to the same. Cold or warm. If this motor had been a running motor at the time I’d done it warm. Thanks for watching I appreciate it.
I've heard some claim that you must ground the spark plugs wires to avoid damage. I have a 1996 200 Evinrude Vindicator with 6 spark plugs, not sure how to ground all 6 if that is really needed. Is this issue optional if your start is brief?? Thanks for the advice!
The best thing to do is make sure it doesn’t spark. On an older motor with a distributor I just pull the main plug off the coil so no spark plugs wires will spark. I also clamp the low pressure side of the fuel pump hose (the inlet) so no fuel comes through to the fuel pump. On new engines you can pull the fuse for the ignition system or disconnect the coil packs. It’s different for every engine but the goal is to stop spark and stop fuel, just have the starter turn the motor. Easy to do by just seeing what type of motor you have and pulling whatever is needed to stop fuel and spark.
Ok so what was the out come of the motor you were working on. I followed the steps you did when is the next video coming out
The motor is still running great. Unfortunately I had a computer crash and lost about 5 videos. Of the motor.
Im in the same situation. I have an old 1953-1954 25hp Big Twin Evinrude OB. When i first got it, i had it serviced and its been sitting in storage since then. Question, is it also a good idea to dump all the old oil as well?
I would. It’s a cheap insurance policy. Some oils will thicken up over time.
@@bowl830 What about the impeller?
Shouldn't you have muffs on or lower unit in a barrel so the impeller isn't dry when your cranking it like that?
You can. In a perfect world I would. Your not gonna generate enough friction to do damage. Now I wouldn’t spin it for 30 seconds. Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it
Hi Jeff. Did you end up using the can of Seafoam after cleaning the carbs?
I did add some to the fuel after the carbs were cleaned and installed. Motor is running perfectly. Thanks.
Can you burn up coils doing that or do tou have to ground plug wires
It won’t hurt them
I have a 2001 40 hp Mercury, 3 cyl., 2 stroke ,oil injected. I have not run or even tried to start this motor in at least 10 years. I did run all of the gas out that was possible and emptied the tank the last time i used it.. I am going to go through the steps to make sure the motor is freed up. My biggest question is pertaining to the oil injection. How do you determine if the oil is being injected as it should be.(Everything was working fine when it was parked) I have had friends blow up their engines when the oil didn't get there. I like the oil injection but i wonder how reliable it will be after sitting so long. Do you think it will be fine,or not chance it and just go back to mixing manually? Your thoughts?
First thanks for watching I appreciate it. If it were me. I’d mix the gas. Maybe 2-3 gallons at first but I’d run the injection system at the same time. Double oil won’t hurt it and you can see how well the injection is working by watching the oil level change.in the reservoir. Just remember injection system actually adjust oil by the Rpm’s running. So it might not look like it’s running at 50/1 by oil level. After you run it just remove plugs and clean. Just in case they get carboned up burning dbl oil
@@bowl830 Thanks a lot, and thanks for the videos. I just happened to find your channel and after watching some of your videos, subscribed. Right off the bat i see you fish the S.C. Lakes. Although i currently live in Texas, I was born in and raised in Conway, S.C. I fished some in Lake Marion and went quite a few times with Don Drose, A local guide. I never fished with any other guides, never had to. Striper and catfish, Don was the man.
Don was the man for sure. Thanks again
Hi jeff I have a 200 hp Mercury Some one told That the compression has to be 120 Is that the right compression Thanks
The biggest thing Is you want your pressure to be equal. A little difference from cylinder to cylinder is ok. Just don’t want one being way lower than the rest. That usually indicates a problem.
Not sure I caught it video, but...Besides opening throttle when testing, should the test be done with a warm or cold engine?
If your trying to just get a snap shot of the health. A cold engine will give you a idea if they’re all equal. Now if it’s my engine and I’m doing my service work I will always run the engine for a minute or two. That will give you the most accurate reading on overall compression and health of engine.
Got a 50 hp mercury 500 4 cylinder all cylinders are at 70 lb I know that's low , what should I do to increase compression?
As long as they’re equal I’d leave it alone. There’s not much you can do other than a full tear down and rebuild to increase compression
Thanks, I just tested a motor but had the remaining spark plugs in and connected when I cranked it. Does that mess up my readings?
Not really it just puts load in n starter your readings should still be good
@@bowl830 Thank you. 75 psi on each cylinder of 30hp Mercury two stroke put me off..am I wrong?
The biggest thing is equal. If they’re all pretty close in compression that usually means you’re good.
@@bowl830 👍👍
Ok to do the compression test with the remote starter without actually starting the engine, getting oil and gas in the crank case. I'm new to this so not sure. Thanks
Yes, your getting fuel just not spark. But you still have to tread it like it could start. I’ve seen people have the engine wiring all messed up lol. That’s why I always remove all wires and most times the plugs. It easier for the motor to spin that way.
Maybe a dumb question but where can I get a handheld remote starter for the engine I’m currently working on? Thanks in advance!
Auto zone has remote starters for engines. A automobile one will work. It hooks to the solenoid . You just pull the trigger .
Not a dumb question I should have mentioned where I got it. Just make sure key is off so motor won’t try to start. Thank you for watching, much appreciated
Team Reelin The Blues awesome thank you! Great video!
I know this is an old video, and this may sound dumb but do you have to drain all that deep creep stuff out first and change the oil? Thanks
No sir. It will just burn out with the exhaust. You will see a lot of oily suit but that is normal. It breaks down all the old carbon build up in the system.
@@bowl830 thank you, I'm possibly buying a boat project this weekend, with an old motor that hasn't run for two years.
Awesome. Good luck and most have fun doing it.
A scope test is what you need first.
Just Wondering, Why didn’t You do a follow up on how the motor turned out, I’m sure others are interested as well.
Well user error.lol. I had a hard drive crash and lost about 10 videos and had sold the boat. . The boat and motor are still running perfectly. Life lesson for sure. Now I instantly back up to external hard drive. Lol
@@bowl830 Why did you sell the boat ?
My older brothers boat tore up on him. I already had 3 lol. He is still using it. Runs like new still
@@bowl830 , Thanks for the Reply, Have a Good Evening.
Will the fuel pump still pump with the ignition off ?
On most yes. Most older outboards use a mechanical pump driven by the outboard when it spins. If it has fuel injection it has a second high pressure electric one to run injectors
awesome. What is a "good" compression tester?
Yes. I’m more worried about the numbers being close to even then the total most times
@@bowl830 i meant what kind of compression tester should i get?
@@osceolaseminole5596 lol. I got a cheap one from auto zone and it is as accurate as my high dollar one. They’re all about the same. Mostly you’re looking for consistency from cylinder to cylinder
@bowl830 thanks for answering. I'm going to get one. Next is the carburetor. Is that a video you have still?
Can you use that electric starter on a pull cord outboard motor?
No sir. It’s just a bypass for the key
@@bowl830 thanks for the quick reply. Do you just pull the pull cord when you have the gauge hooked up to the compression test then?
Yes sir. I usually pull all the plugs and open the throttle to wide open. That will let the motor turn freely and give you a good reading.
@@bowl830 thanks again for the quick reply. Subscribed to your channel and wishing you all the best from Queensland Australia.
Where is the third video that shows how to clean the carbs???? I really like your videos and I’m going through this right now...
Sorry I had some KZhead issues and lost a few videos. I’m in the process of building my new shop so hopefully I can get some content up soon. I appreciate you watching and commenting thank you
Sounds good because I really like your style of teaching. I have a 200 hp Johnson that was given to me that hasn’t been ran in 10 years and I’m lost on what to do. Thanks a ton
What happened to the carburetor cleaning ,Seafoam & starting???
Issue with KZhead. Videos were lost
im new to bosting trying to get my engine running,,,im wondering about that tank back there? is that for oil? and does that mean its self mixes? you oil and gas? or do i still need to mix my gas on a 2 stroke?
If it has a little tank in back it probably is a oil tank. If it’s been sitting a while I’d mix my gas till I was sure the oil injection is working. Add oil to tank and see if it is using it. It won’t hurt the engine if it gets dbl oil for a short time.
@@bowl830 awesome thanks ...what kind do u recommend
They’re all about the same.
@@bowl830 perfect, I'm replacing spark plug well see if she 🔥up
Says use tc-w oil.? Just dump my 2 cycle oil in right
do you have to disconnect fuel pump/
Not realty. Your not going to pump that much fuel during the test. Besides you want the lubrication from the fuel.
Really should have throttle at wot when testing. Not that critical tho. Only changes few lbs
👍
Ever get this running???
Yes sir it runs like a top. Never had a issue with it.
So the motor never ran?
Yes sir still running like a top. The compression actually got better after about a tank of gas. I had a computer crash with the videos of it running. Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it
But it's been sitting for many years at least over 10
Hi je
What about 15 percent off?
I’d still be ok but I’d keep a good check in that. Just to see if it’s getting worse over time. Some motors will show different pressures because of wear at different temps.
My 1975 Evinrude sat up 9 years. Fresh tank of gas and bam, ran like a scalded dog.
Whoa ....wait, were`s part the three? You`ve got to clean the carbs still ...don`t keep us hanging, pleeeease!!!!???
I had a computer crash and lost three videos I know I suck lol. It broke my heart. Valuable lesson learned. I’m picking up a motor next week. Hopefully it will be a good candidate for videos. I apologize. Thank you for watching. I truly appreciate it.
Team Reelin The Blues I was also looking for part 3. Great videos and information. What is the next step you would take before cranking? My engine is fuel injected so no carbs to clean.
Once you get the rings lubricated up and you and know they’re not seized. I’d just add some fresh gas and oil and give her a spin. Just always do a little break in. You don’t have to do 10 hrs but it’s always best to run idle to about half throttle for a short period., then work it up from there. After a trip out check those plugs to make sure they’re burning clean and do another compression test and check against you’re baseline
Plenty of new engine 2years old before sold!
Your correct but the cylinders are fogged at factory and fuel system treated and drained after test run. Then 10 hours of break in. Lol. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment. I appreciate it.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, WHY doesn't anyone tell us what the FACTORY PSI supposed to be,,,????
