What is British Humour? Is it funny? Does it even exist? How does it relate to our communication style and culture? In this episode I go through the main points of my British Council Teacher Talk about British Humour. Amber and I discuss the definition of British humour, the way it works, how it's different or similar to other humour in other places, and some examples of typical humour in the UK.

hey luke i think my british accent is not as good as my american but I wanna speak in... what do you say
This episode reminds me of my CELTA tutor “Paul Mason” (an English teachers’ trainer at the British Council in Egypt). He is a true example of that, I loved his humor and I always told him to start a stand up comedy show talking about his life in Egypt as an English person. Some of my colleagues had hard time understanding him though. I didn’t, because obviously I am so advanced in English that I am almost like a native (this is clearly a joke). Love for you and Amber🫶🏻
Again, just the audio track but no video. I'm thinking of uploading all my audio episodes onto KZhead from now on. Let me know if you think this is a good idea. Automatic subtitles are not available on long videos like this unfortunately.
Luke's English Podcast Thank you so much Luke. I'm very very very very very very very thankful for you for everything ❤️ ... and I think uploading videos is a great idea 👏🏻
Hello Luke, thank you so much for the great podcast :) I am used to listening to LEP at 1.3-2x speed on my android devices, so I can say it may be a good idea because of youtube speed control feature, but... Uploading all episodes will have taken a lot of your time, so I think it is not so necessarily
Magic Man Actually it's an automatic setting with my new podcast host so it doesn't take much time.

A very good podcast about British humour. I´ve enjoyed it a lot. Humour is what we need in our daily life being always careful who with. It´s a shame not to have any sense at all and some people would need a bit of a doze. I find it neccessary to make my life easier.
I think I understand British Humour more through Luke's presentation of his podcast. Luke is a real humourist!
humourast
keep it up, mate!
Hi Teacher. I hope you are well. I think Britsh humour is completely different than Angola humour which is the Country I was born. The Angola humour is new, started a few years ago and at the moment we don't have too many comedies, in my Country. On the other hand, our comedies are too young and they need more knowledge of comedy. Maybe in the future, we will have more comedies in our Country. On my view, I think we need more comedies because this is part of our culture, and our culture would get richer. Despite so many problems we are facing now such as COVID- 19 and social issues, I truly believe that from now on will have many people to join the comedy. All of us around the world we are fighting with a terrible virus which I believe together we will overcome it. I have to say that I have been listening to your podcast four about four days sensitively. I like your pronunciation which is British of course, and to be honest, it has been helping me a lot. I enjoy learning English, but in the beginning, I did not like it. But now I deleted learning English because it will open for me many doors because the better you speak English the better you get a job. This is my point of view., and I have been learning English for four years now, and I have to say that I have been really enjoying it. Sometimes I make some mistakes when I speak or writing, but as my Teacher said, all of these mistakes are of learning is completely natural he said, then I have been trying to do my best as I can. I truly believe that I will be successful despite my personal problems. I hope you are well again and keep doing this amazing job which is expanding English all over the world. Thank you very, much, Luke, for knowledge that you have been sharing to us. I have been learning a lot from you.
Amazing
38:35: Of course, it is!!! and the slapping is literal .. hahahaha
great!
35:10 The ambulance siren in the background nicely underscored just how crazy those people are, who absolutely don't get British humour)))
Awesome
It was very interesting btw
38:50 In Egypt, we slap hands or knees when we laugh yeah 😂😂😂
Bravo 🌞 Lit 💡 Impressive 😍 gratitude for your satisfactory Work 💪🚀
Hi Teacher. What a lovely Amber’s voice. I like her voice. Proper British. Does she participated in any Archers episode? Because I remember head her in one of archers episodes. I think so.
great,luke
Like Amber, I've also been watching a lot of Gordon Ramsey's videos. He's unbelievably good at swearing and cooking. Very nice episode always love to hear Amber's voice so lovely. Cheers ❤️
Is it your natural way of speaking? Or you're making a kind of teacher voice so we can understand it better? I love your accent!
❤
Hi Luke, great program, I am really improve mi english skills, listening your podcast,, but I usually see the BBC program. ".The Graham Norton Show," and I really found pretty difficult to understand some interview and their jokes, If will be great if you make a podcast about it. thanks and have a nice week.

Hey Luke! I'm not sure if it is a local thing, but for me automatic subtitles work just fine (even though I don't need them at all) Love from Moscow!
Ah cool, so they are working.
рашка парашка лол
"the problem with the English is you never know when they're joking. You just never know whether they're being serious or not" - How very true, Luke. I remember there was an absolutely lucky chance to be visitor to the House of Parliament in London. Somehow the other visitors did not guess it was possible to enter the House of Lords as well as the House of Commons, but that is not the point. The point is when quite late in the evening were at last leaving, overwhelmed with impressions/what we saw/heard/learned... when we were literally near the exit we saw a spacious area on the right, virtually empty... and it was pretty late... yet we dared to ask the security guy what that was. He politely answered it was nothing important. May we walk over there? - Yah, go ahead! ... It turned out to be THE MOST legendary, the oldest hall in the House of Parliament... I was kind of angry at that guy!! If we believed him, THE OFFICER, we would have missed such extraordinary site! Look, what even has just had place there! Oh, that Britsh humour...
loved your Arnold Schwarzenegge LOL
Taking any tense or joyful situstion light or normal and a normal one very serious is humour .
Can we say the pleasent situation which comes naturally in our daily conversation is humour and a funny situation which we create deliberately is comedy .
I am from Turkey and the I found some similarities with the Turkish culture. Turkish culture also not direct. We don’t prefer to say No directly because it is somehow rude and may hurt the other people hearing No directly. I also found some similarities with the humour.
My name is Nandini Datta. I am from India ( Kolkata).
Humour is equally same in almost every culture but others can't see or understand that because they don't know the language and culture.
good luck Luke
why does one say "oh, yeah, yeah, no i definitely support you..." instead of "yeah, i support you..."? what does that "yeah, yeah, no" construction mean? is it agreement or disagreement?
it's the process of thinking, you stub
lmfao.
How can we improve our accent,Luke?
You can't go wrong with British humor.
as with a french wine 🍷
Could recommend a good book for phonetics?
Try "Ship or Sheep" by Ann Baker or "English Pronunciation in Use (Intermediate)" by Mark Hancock.
I liked this woman very much. She's so lovely.I'd like to follow her on instagram.😂
She sounds like Isha Guha.
Hey luke tell me about Russian jok ?
russian joke all about crazes
Really
I agree with your opinion that English humor isn't funny at all.It doesn't make you laugh. It's just simple. The British jokes are for intellectual contestation.
Hi
l agree that most British people are ready for humour at any any point and if they aren't it stands out. l strongly feel that Margaret Thatcher's lack of a sense of humour is what made her such a dreadful human being.
Luke, it was a good podcast until right at the end, where you launched into a political lecture on "racism". It's not cool to make jokes about ethnic minorities? Well, I'm English and I think political correctness is not cool - and yes, jokes about ethnic minorities, if funny, should definitely get a good airing in a free society. A bitter Remainer?
Disappointed Englishman if funny
Gosh, for a discussion from someone who's cracked humour, I'm finding this very boring.
again some british humour isnt't it?
