  • The first year my husband and I were dating, we got a bull mastiff lab cross, and he was the best dog I will probably ever own. He was scared of everything, but when we had kids he took to them instantly. He would nanny them as infants and eventually became one of our son's therapy dogs. He naturally knew how to help my son, and would know before we did if he was sick. We lost him to cancer at 11, he had a terrible time recovering from the first removal surgery so when it came back we decided not to put him through it. A king of dogs. And yes, he was afraid of baths.

Lars I'm moved to put himself between the guy and us (without a command from me). He watched him until he was well past us, then immediately came to my side. No barks, no growls. He regularly terrified solicitors (he'd stick his head out the door). I'm surprised that none of them fell off the porch, they'd back up so quickly.

    • I love other people's mastiffs. The owners always seem surprised when I'm eager to pat them, I guess since I'm a fairly small person so they expect me to be intimidated, but I adore their big block heads and the way they just lumber around. Can't handle the drool though and I think it would be potentially unsafe to have a dog I have no hope of ever being able to physically control if needed (I'm disabled as well and live alone so no backup from someone else).

But thanks to his early training, any of their 3 young kids could trim, brush, clean him up as needed, without a problem, although my youngest nephew did like to lay on Bullitt to brush those teeth (avoid the drool). • Speaking of fear, I am super afraid of dogs and while I don't know if I'm ready to dive face first into surrounding myself with them, watching your videos has helped me understand their body language a lot better which has helped ease the fear a little. Usually I live in a nightmare when I leave my house because everyone lets their giant dogs roam off leash and I don't know what to do around them ever AND I'm afraid so I just stay inside all the time. But I think I'm a little less terrified than before. It also doesn't hurt to see this guy who could probably kill me with a single tackle being more terrified of getting into the bath than I am of him

    @rocketpsyence@rocketpsyenceАй бұрын
    • Same here..

      @8Ranjitha@8RanjithaАй бұрын
    • Don't worry, this is much more accurate to how successful exposure therapy works than just diving in face first. When done right it starts with looking at pictures and then videos of the thing you're scared of and moving fairly slowly. NOT some asshole going "oh, you're scared of spiders? here's my tarantula!!!" So entirely accidentally you're doing it right. Unfortunately it sounds like most of the dog owners in your area aren't very responsible but if you can find one who is then one day when you're more ready you could try meeting their dog in a supervised situation, but that's up to you and only if you're comfortable with the idea. Learning about dog body language is a good idea either way though since it's often easier to be scared of things that are incomprehensible and being able to tell the difference between an aggressive and a friendly dog removes a lot of unpredictability.
