ABOUT PAPADAKIS RACING:
The Papadakis Racing team began drifting in 2004 and is the most winning team in Formula Drift history, earning the 2015 title with driver Fredric Aasbo, as well as backto back championship titles with driver Tanner Foust in 2007 and 2008. The Rockstar Energy Drink / Nexen Tire Toyota Corolla Hatchback is the latest competition build from the Hawthorne, California, based team.
Team owner Stephan Papadakis is a legend of sport compact racing who began building his reputation in the 1990s with the first front-wheel drive, tube-chassis drag car in the U.S. The team earned multiple records and championships in the discipline, turning in elapsed times and trap speeds previously thought unattainable in front-drive drag cars. Papadakis' successes in front-wheel drive were matched by his efforts in rear-wheel drive when he campaigned a Honda Civic that became just the fifth car to join the NHRA's Sport Compact 200 MPH club.

    • Rebuilding my Getrag 233 (aka Toyota V-160) taught me more than this video by a long shot. Prepping motorcycle engines for racing also taught me a whole lot about "dog" boxes, shimming gears, and backcutting straight dogs. The dogs in this box are undercut as anyone would expect for something at this level of competition, but doing this with inverted cone stones by hand on both dogs and holes is a painstaking effort.

  • Top notch content. Simple, to the point & informative. Thanks for sharing. Btw, Stephen, what's your thoughts on the new Supra? Although there is a bunch of internet pitch-forking, I think there's gonna be a high demand along with local dealers adding on "Its a Supra" 10k tax. Being that you guys work closely with TRD/Toyota in Formula Drift, is there a chance that we'll see Aasbo piloting a Papadakis Racing Toyota Supra in a year or two?

    @mugshotmarley@mugshotmarley5 жыл бұрын
    • Chiming in, I hate internet pitchforking I think Toyota took the success of the Subaru twins the wrong way. Everyone wanted the '86, they made a pure reasonably priced car close to it's roots even though it's boxter engine is a pain is some areas but with just enough to HP to have fun. BMW reputation lately with deteriorating obscenely priced plastics, gm sourced transmissions and massive cost cutting have gutted that brand. Toyotas reputation or over built modifyable engines was the MAIN reasons this car would've sold. Once this car pushes $70k after the stealer tax, that opens up A LOT of other options. They needed to go backwards towards lighter and powerful AND that overbuilt engine. I don't think the BMW engine will cut it. Driving dynamics might be stellar but then why not buy a Subaru twin? They basically competed with themselves

      @consciouscool@consciouscool5 жыл бұрын
    • That’s what I don’t get. Why Toyota, known for unimpeachably reliable engines, went to Subaru boxer ( albeit a fine enough engine ) for the 86 and now BMW? It’s the heart of the car! And Toyota isn’t putting their hearts in their cars.

      @blakestone75@blakestone755 жыл бұрын

  • I drove a Pro Drive rally car with a dog box on it with straight cut gears and it was very loud but you could just ram it into gears without synchros by just coming off the throttle a bit. If it wasn't for the noise they make I would love to run one in my street STI.

    @Barnacules@Barnacules5 жыл бұрын
    • You can run dog boxes in street cars, the issue is every shift you make you have to shift with 100% force. The dog teeth will round off and engagement doesn't feel as quick or easy. But STI transmissions are stout, there should be no reason to run one under 800hp if you aren't drag racing every weekend. Even a dog box WRX transmission isn't even half as strong as a stock STI transmission, dog sets aren't always better. I build evo/subaru transmissions every day and it is a very common misconception.

  • Helical gears are stronger than straight cut gears. Straight gears are used because they dont produce axial loads like helical gears, so they don't require the high strength axial thrust bearings. This greatly simplifies crankcase design, decreases cost, and most important decreases weight.

    @merlinious01@merlinious015 жыл бұрын

    @ChaseRacebox@ChaseRacebox5 жыл бұрын
    • Majority of the dog boxes ive built for the racing guys and come back for a overhaul after a year or so.. the main problem ive found is the quality of the gears! The majority of them have gone through the case hardening on every gear plus laygear! For how much the customer pays for the Quaife gearset alone and the state of it when it comes back for a rebuild is a joke!

      @peteb3091@peteb30915 жыл бұрын
    • If you look, you can actually see that the pocket on the dog he showed up close was deformed at the root of the lug.. Obviously the other part is looking for tooth wear and of course, bent shift forks.

      @mattnsac@mattnsac5 жыл бұрын
    • I work on motorcycles and they use dogs for engagement of the gears, a common issue is dogs rounding off from poor shifts and the rounded dogs act like ramps and pop the gear out of engagement. I see it a lot on the lower gears like 1st and 2nd. also the shift forks being bent can cause the rounding to start happening because its not pushing the gear firmly in enough. Transmissions meant for high engine power will use undercutting on the fixed gears to make sure there is more positive engagement to prevent dogs from not engaging enough and start getting rounded.

      @Jl4zio@Jl4zio5 жыл бұрын
    • Jl4zio Yeah I see that in Automotive gearboxes too. I’ve built dog engagement gearboxes for customers but I don’t ever get any in for maintenance, so I didn’t know what would wear first; the lugs or the drive teeth.

  • I wish NASCAR would market the fact that they use manual transmissions. Modern race transmissions with paddle shifting blow these out of the water, but it is still impressive to watch a skilled driver shift and work the clutch. Even if it's not true, NASCAR could assert in their marketing that their drivers have more skill and their sport is a truer racing sport. Obviously it would also be nice if they raced fewer oval tracks otherwise I suppose no one really cares about the transmission since they hardly shift.

      @matthewhartup941@matthewhartup9414 жыл бұрын
    • Actually, you can make it an overdrive by setting up 3rd gear as an overdrive, the shift linkage is changed for 3rd & 4th, 4th 1:1 becomes 3rd and 3rd becomes 4th overdrive, The gear sets are interchangeable as underdrive or overdrive. If this makes your brain hurt, I am sorry. From Russia, with LOVE.

  • Straight cut gears aren't stronger, helical gears should be stronger due to more teeth being in mesh with each other. Plus they are quieter because of that. Where straight cut gears help is because you don't have axial force acting on the shafts, like on helical cut gears, you don't need the casing to be as strong axially, only radially between the two shafts. That's why a straight cut upgraded gearbox (in factory housing) for a road car is stronger, it doesn't open up the casing.

  • many folks may not know that is a constant mesh transmission, where the gears never disengage, only the dogs, via the sliders. Most factory transmissions the gears fully disengage or engage every shift. This style is most common in motorcycles, as in all motorcycles use this style. Would love to see a sequencial box tore down, if only you used them.

    @WelLRoundeDSquarE@WelLRoundeDSquarE5 жыл бұрын
    • Nearly every factory manual transmission is a constant mesh. The only difference between these gearboxes and the gearboxes in street cars is the shape of the teeth (straight vs helical) and the way gears are selected (dogs vs synchros). Synchros serve the same purpose as the dogs do, only they are much smoother and you don't need to rev match, but you do have to use the clutch.

      @bman12three43@bman12three435 жыл бұрын
    • @@bman12three43 you are so wrong. factory transmissions disengage. the syncros are brass, and cut so the gear trying to engage it connects with syncro, that has a friction clutch inside the steel gear. it then causes the steel gear to match speed of other gear which allows them to ebgage without grinding. when you have constane mesh and dogs, you have no need for syncros. you contradict yourself. Don't post your opinions, it is a dservice to present opinions as facts. I've been working on cars since the 60's. Chevy's Rock Crusher, the M22, in all performance cars in the 60's and early 70's had straight cut gears and no syncros. You had to use your whole upper body to "bang" gears or rpm watch with throttle, or they wouldn't engage and they would grind the corners off the teeth. go take apart a manual cars trans, and a motorcycle trans and tell me they are the same. I've rebuilt at least 10 car and 50 bike transmissions.

    • @@WelLRoundeDSquarE I don't think you quite understand what I am saying. Let me read you some lines from Wikipedia: "The gears were typically engaged by sliding them on their shafts (hence the phrase shifting gears), which required careful timing and throttle manipulation when shifting, so the gears would be spinning at roughly the same speed when engaged; otherwise, the teeth would refuse to mesh. These transmissions are called sliding mesh transmissions or sometimes crash boxes, because of the difficulty in changing gears and the loud grinding sound that often accompanied" This is where the gears are not meshing and you force them to mesh right? Now let me read another line: "Newer manual transmissions on 4+-wheeled vehicles have all gears mesh at all times and are referred to as constant-mesh transmissions, with "synchro-mesh" being a further refinement of the constant mesh principle." Hmm, gears that mesh at all times, that are called constant mesh transmissions? Go ahead and send me a picture of a synchronized manual transmission where the gears are not meshed at all times. Here are some examples: i.ytimg.com/vi/vOo3TLgL0kM/maxresdefault.jpg Well look at that, all the gears are in mesh. i0.wp.com/www.econofix.com/mtrans2a.jpg Here's another one, still in mesh. kzhead.info/sun/qbOoY7iEnn5mnoU/bejne.html Oh heres a youtube video where you can see all the gears meshing constantly.

You should consider a video "school" on mechanics, like the military has attempted. You would succeed where others have failed. Watching something work as the basic principles are explained prepares one for the more complex or in depth concepts to come. I learned best with hands-on experience, but this was just as clear. • Wrong. straight cut gears are not stronger! they are same or even weaker than helical cut gears. They have smaller contact pattern, never wandered how can they be stronger? Only one difference that straight cut gears don`t have axial load while turning. Lower forces means smaller bearings, smaller gearbox case, lighter more compact gearbox. Lighter car = faster car. Downside they are loud, but who cares its a race, people want to see loud cars :) So that`s why you see helical in every day car and straight gears in race cars.
