On this week’s episode on The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet, we are joined by Newcastle United and England winger Anthony Gordon.
Gary Neville meets Gordon along Whitley Bay beach and start off with the first part of quick-fire questions, where the Liverpudlian opens up about the importance of psychology and meditation has had on his game.
Gordon made a huge decision to move to Newcastle from Everton in January 2022 and talks about life at St James Park under Eddie Howe, his own ambitions and the clubs goals as he enjoys his most prolific spell in professional football to date.
With the upcoming Euros and having made his senior England debut in March’s international friendlies against Brazil and Belgium, the 23-year-old will be looking to replicate last summers achievements that seen him named player of the tournament as England lifted the under-21 European trophy.
Lastly Quick-Fire Questions resume where Gordon reveals his best goal, who he’d want to take a last-minute penalty to save his life and which former-team mate Gordon reminds Gary of in terms of self-confidence.

  • Anthony Gordon is a big reason why I get frustrated with Marcus Rashford. He has the right attitude and determination. He knows his strengths and is always dangerous, running at defenders. Throughout Newcastle’s injury crisis, Gordon has always been available, running his arse off without complaining or sulking. He takes responsibility on the pitch like a proper footballer.

    • "Get frustrated with" Mate I'm done with Rashford, he's just gone to far. It's like he's worked harder at failing than he has at being successful. I'm thinking it would be better for everyone if he went to another club.

    • You shouldn't as we generally only get to see what they do on the pitch or when they fck up and get in the papers. Transfers and being selected for the team are based on all the stuff we don't see and assessed by professionals with loads of insight and data available. The media pile on to drive conversation/interaction. Fans often don't fully understand how hard playing at the premiership level is and how bad a player can look one week despite maybe still being in the top 0.01% of footballers. This new era or media is going to change a lot of minds on how footballers are.

And he's obviously got it up top, he thinks, he's not one of these wingers where his teammates doesn't know what he's going to do, he comes across very well and a deep thinking lad. He's obviously got the brains to be a good manager post career but I'm just happy he's loving it at Newcastle and as most know just try 10/10 every match and you will always be loved. I just hope him, Bruno, Isak, Barnes, Miley, Botmam, all our top players, if we can keep and add then there is no reason this team can't finally win a trophy, just need the rub of the green... It's close. Great interview!
