Called pataste in Honduras, sayote in the Philippines. This plant is daylight length sensitive and will not grow fruits until the days are shorter northern climates, that is in October and November. It will grow all summer like crazy and then in the fall there are far to many chayotes to eat all maturing at once. Then a frost will kill it to the roots. The roots will resprout the following spring.
Its root also can be eaten ,curry form and by boiling

Does anyone here knows that the main root actually tastes more savoury than the fruit? Its uncommon but worth trying. You'll crave it 😉 once you taste it. Also the aged Chayote is much tastier than the new one. We Meitei call Chayote "DASCOOS". We love to cook it, boiled or roasted.💞💓

We call it "Sayote". In Northern Philippines, our region (Cordillera Region) is very mountainous so we plant chayotes on mountain slopes. This way, we can save spaces to farm other vegestable on even fields. Harvesting them is quite a work because of the steep location. I love sauted chayote tops and tinolang manok with chayote (Stewed chicken with chayote).
Sarap 😊
