  • Great insights. Funny for me as a Dutch person is that we do have institutions where you can go anonymously to test your drugs. For example if a Dutch person would want to test what chems are in his/her xtc, he can just go to a special institute and test one of the pills. He/she can get the results and just check if it's save. The funny part is that possession of drugs is illegal, taking it isn't.

      @jimbob7582@jimbob75824 ай бұрын
    • He is correct. This drug is like alcohol in a lot of ways. There are folks that should not do alcohol and there are folks that should not do cocaine. I have done cocaine off and on for 44 years with not major consequences. The last time I used it was 11 months ago. It is not something i wish to do everyday or a few times a week like alcohol. I do it when it is convenient and when it is available in high quality. I'm sure there are many folks like me, but due to the stigma, we don't shout about it. The Dr is correct.

  • When Joe said the paranoia scared him I feel that. Reason I stopped smoking. I truly believe it helps a lot of folks but for me it all of the sudden turned into a 2nd voice in my head ( no not literally ) but my own self showing me a list of things I’ve done wrong. Heart beating fast, anxiety, feeling like a pos, having a sense of doom. But maybe that’s the key. Maybe if I slowly adjust the things I feel are broken and use it to help, it is almost a look from the outside in

  • It’s true what he says. Most people that do drugs still function just fine. When you lose your grip on life for a moment the drugs can create a cushioned warm place to fall into. It’s not easy getting back up and struggle to hold on again when you could just rest in this warm embrace. That’s when you atrophy. You get so used to to not having to hold on anymore and the strength you developed slips away. Now you can’t hold on and you’re dependent on what’s holding you up to survive. The drugs.

And these can be brutal. @3rdOrderFX@3rdOrderFX3 жыл бұрын
    • That becomes a problem because these substances can literally change neural pathways in the brain. Where you once had discipline... you now can't tell yourself "No". This is how powerful addiction is. It completely takes over. The "choice" of whether to participate or not is virtually removed. Imagine this... what level of discipline would you need to tell yourself to stop breathing? Its possible in principle but impossible in practice. You'd always gasp for air at the last second... This is what real addiction is like for a lot of people. For a lot of people... drugs are their air.

Exercise, food, working too much, collecting things, spending money. Anything to put you outside yourself and bury emotions. Many people eat everyday and don't get addicted. Many people exercise and don't get addicted to it, just like many people smoke cannabis and do not get addicted, etc

  • Being a recovering addict of 12 years myself i can tell you that there are many people who lose control as soon as this drug inters there system, this is why NA programs and many doctors call addiction a disease. I do agree that we should be able to put anything we want in our bodies and better support systems instead of locking them up.

    @jasonolinger6967@jasonolinger69673 жыл бұрын
    • Drug addiction being a "disease" as in something you have no control over is nonsense propaganda made up by AA and NA to make people religious. I'm an ex-addict and i was shocked by the garbage they spout in NA and AA, basically telling people they're weak and powerless victims of an uncontrollable disease that is out to get them at any moment and that the only way they can recover is to accept a "higher power". It was incredibly sad seeing people who had been sober for decades and they still went to NA every single day, probably because they've been convinced that they're weak and they're going to immediately fail and relapse if they stop going. And i'm not surprised if they really feel like hopeless addicts if they spend every day talking about how hopelessly addicted they are and how every day is a struggle, even after being sober for years. They're never going to recover and get over it if they wallow in it every single day instead of finding something else to think about. Many addicts have experienced so much shit and struggle that they're probably stronger people mentally than the average person, so they should be taught that they're not powerless, and that they are in control and they're the only ones who can change their lives for the better, not some mystical higher power or some borderline cult organization like NA.

    • @ProfX the point I’m making is that the Carl Hart is a doctor who administers drugs under controlled settings and understands the effects that it has on the brain. Under controlled settings you are able to control the variables. The person who wrote the comment isn’t qualified to speak on it. He’s merely giving an anecdote. What he was taking was not under controlled settings, he has no idea what adulterants where in his supply and he has no idea what the variables were which led to his 12 year addiction. That’s the main difference.

  • So I just watched the whole podcast on Spotify, I agree with many of this guys ideas including legalisation, testing, harm reduction but he just doesn’t want to go there when it comes to drugs causing addiction or damage, his side step regarding what Jordan Peterson went through says it all, in response to the question what do you think about the horrible experience Peterson had coming off benzos his reply was “ why did he stop” erm cause he fucking wanted to dude!!! He never once mentioned the neurological aspect to cocaine or heroin addiction and just blamed it all on people’s stuff, I’ve tried both and the first thing that goes through your mind is “more” your brain wants more and yeah if you have shit going on then you probably are more likely to do more but some of these drugs are physically addictive and it seems he has a real blind spot there

  • This is very *close* to being correct. It was Angelo Mariani who fortified wine with coca EXTRACT, which means all the vitamins and other positive nutrients the plant has to offer were still in the drink - a HUGE distinction from cocaine-hydrochloride which is merely the active molecule! The same can be said for Coca-Cola which was never "spiked" with cocaine. Yes, we are never exposed or told about the positive side of the drug which was used for countless centuries by the people of South America to prevent altitude sickness and work for days or even weeks without other sustenance! The problem(s) began when our government banned the drug in "any and all forms," because then it was only available in the molecular form which is highly concentrated for the purpose of smuggling. An inconvenient truth for U.S. policy is that coca, in its natural state, is no more harmful than coffee or tea! Caffeine and cocaine are both stimulants for the central nervous system, but one is administered through the stomach, the other through the mucus membrane, or inhalation when smoked. If caffeine were made illegal, and it nearly was, it too would also be a highly addictive 'street drug' which causes psychoses for the users. Another consideration - the U.S. "war on drugs" policy has utterly destroyed South American culture to the point where people are fleeing their home-lands for the n (perceived) relative safety of the U.S. I believe that if coca had never been outlawed, we wouldn't have the problems with boarder policies we face today because people would be content in the relative safety of the lands they were born in. (BTW, coca was also being successfully used as a means to quit using nicotine and/or alcohol, which then becomes market protection for those drugs which also have ZERO medicinal value, but people are 'free' to consume at-will without fear of imprisonment!)

I think the point that this guy is wanting to get across is that when this does happen to people we need to be able to give them something that isn’t killing them and the drugs itself is not what kills.

    • I think its beyond stupid to think otherwise. We know that most people who use drugs are responsible members of society, and 80-90% of people who used drugs are not addicted. My friends and I all used drugs in the past and 99% of us were never addicted and we are all functional members of society. Even addicted people can be fully functional if we give them legal product and dont criminally charge them and stigmatize them. The reason drugs make people fked up is mostly bcs of stupid laws and criminal cycle people get themself into after being criminally persecuted.

    • @James Prime yeah, i mean, the only reason why it might seem that you can not do drugs and be responsible member of society, is bcs of drug criminalization and social pressure drug users experience... So if you are heroin or cocaine user, or heroin, cocaine addict, of course you will have hard time functioning in society where people and law put pressure onto you and criminalize and stigmatize you. Especially in america... In Switzarland heroin addicts are functional, have jobs and good connections to families, and are responsible... Why? Bcs society accepts them, and do not discard them for their drug use. In america, heroin users are rejected by society, left alone, criminalized... So of course they have hard time functioning, and they need to do bad stuff to support their drug habbit.... So drug war and social unacceptence enhances addiction, and gets people sucked into never ending miserable cycle..
