Restoration of a Rusty Vintage Straight Razor

Restored and New Ebony and Brass Handle.
Restoration of a vintage straight razor made in the 1950s or 1960s. The blade is very rusty. The handle is just celluloid, chipped, faded, and hasn't aged well. I decided to make a new one from brass and Gaboon ebony.
I added a matte gold logo with electroplating and steel blackener, using vinyl stencils.

    • Done correctly? If that razor ever gets loose there are no pubs to re tighten it. Moreover that razor will never shave, not comfortably as least, honing was also done incorrectly. Only spine leading strokes, and the razor was also lifted, not allowing for the correct angle for the razor spine and edge to hit the hone.

    • Paying attention to every little detail when handcrafting items(especially a work of art like this) is the difference between a tool that will be used for 4-5+ generations vs throw away and replace regularly. Ive gotten to the point that i refuse to buy disposable junk. If i didn't make it or it can't be passed down to my children im not spending money on it. We used to take pride in the things we made and strive to be the best. We also used to maintain and care for the thing we do have. Neither of these things are common anymore. A blade like this is worth every bit of the maintenance it'll take to use daily and in passing it down we teach our children/ grandchildren a valuable in caring for, maintaining and being able to repair the things in their lives that are essentials.

  • I like your restorations, great job. This razor restoration is the best razor restoration video among the others. I have a little collection of straight razor and in my opinion you done a great job at cleaning the blade. The scales(handles) looks great and very nicely and neatly done, however if you ever use it for shaving(provided the blade honed properly) it may cause little balance issues and may take some time to get used to but for the looks and display it's very nice. Most straight razors the blade is little bit heavier than the scales and this makes it easier to handle/use/control. Great channel and content, keep up the good work.

    @nitro74cs@nitro74cs3 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks for the thoughtful comment. The handle is much lighter than it make look in the video. I thinned the scales down quite a bit. It's heavier than the plastic handles obviously but light enough and balanced enough to shave with without much additional effort. It's much lighter than some razors I've seen. Also, this is not going to be my daily driver. :) Thanks for watching!

  • Never seen a brass paneled support body, like a pocket knife used to hold the scales on a razor before. Mine isn’t that beautiful, just scales that absorb water as I shave. Looks like a precision job. well done!

  • Pickling in citric acid solution is preferred by modern metallurgists. Environmentally friendly, effective, & doesn't promote pitting unlike some chloride based rust removers.

  • im a little befuddled as to why you soldered the pins for the wood scales of the handle but didnt solder the bolsters for the handle. I mean why settle for epoxy there but then solder the pins? Other than that it looks very nice. Im not asking this to try to point out a flaw..I mean Im wondering if there was a reason that I am not understanding is all.

    • "why you soldered the pins for the wood scales of the handle but didnt solder the bolsters for the handle." The pins for the bolsters go all the way through to the other bolster on the other side. Not so the pins for the scales.
