What a CLASSIC. What a cast, including the actor who played young Tristram. Stunning acting. And as used to be the case with British sitcoms, the tightest most incredible script-writing ever. Just gorgeous. Giving massive chuckles and giggles and sometimes tears of laughter, repeatedly, after all these years. I'm 55, a NZer....and I salute everyone involved in this series.

  • I have to say that this is one of those rare comedy programs from the 70s that has not aged too badly. The questionable language that does appear in a lot of comedies from that era as far as racist names just does not appear. The language as far as race and sexist ideas are not there, One only has to watch old shows like the comedians to see openly racist views as well as sexist views being given, In one episode a lodger that the Ropers take in says he is not interested in Mildred as he is Gay, that is just said and Mildred understands and there is no name-calling upon hearing such a term being used, back then many other very degrading words would have been used for a gay man. These writers and actors were ahead of their time, and maybe this is why this has stood the test of time. This show followed George and Mildred as they moved from their old home that was a large house converted to bedsits that they owned and ran, In a show called Man about the house, Robin the man who lived with two women moved and opened his little bistro in Robins nest, all of these shows thankfully were well written and very good to watch. I have to say that out of all those shows this has got to be the most loved and best of them all, Poor Mildred would despair at George, but every so often we would see love for Mildred come from George in a very simple yet deep love for his wife.

    • I do not obviously know who you are but to even go into such a comment about what is said and isn't said in older programs, like a comedy show or for that matter or any other film material dating back to a time when you were obviously not even born, is actually quite tiring for us older generations folk to constantly be questioned and even berated for what is used in our speech on a daily basis.... the terms politically correct speech is utterly ridiculous and frankly insulting to most of us when we are now told and berated for not using correct language, when half the time most younger people speak in what I consider to be half a language and certainly not proper language.... I mean how are we supposed to know what CU or LOL or RU means when receiving such ridiculous messages on one's mobile phones , I of course now know what they mean but it really shows just how frankly lazy and inconsiderate the younger mobile generation is towards those of us who actually know properly how to speak or verbalize ourselves to one another , we use coherent proper correct words that are properly spelt out and everything is quite clear and understood. What people like yourself do not seem to realize or refuse to accept or understand is that none of those terms that you speak of were used necessarily in a derogatory way, but rather in ways that were culturally considered quite funny at the time and even people who were of a certain skin colour or of a certain belief system or way of life or background at the time took it all in good stride and were not necessarily offended by any of these programs.!!.. Whereas today quite honestly the films and comedy shows that are out there today are in fact far more offensive disgusting and even crass than at any other time in cinematic history....as the comedies are usually quite rude and with no intelligent language whatsoever....the old comedies have an excellent use of language and an excellent source of Brilliant Actors and Actresses ever to have been on stage or on film they were brilliant in language and in performance....one cannot say that there is anything today that comes even close to meeting the excellent comedy standard of yester year... same goes for many films today with a few exceptions... instead we are constantly bombarded with violence, unending violence in films and TV programs and utter filth in so-called comedy shows that are nothing but funny but are everything disgusting and rude and filled with filth and language which one does not even understand....as if it is expected of us the audience to find such crass comedies funny or even hilarious..... Language and the excellent use of and nuance of language in everyday normal situations as is often portrayed in comedies of yester year are what makes excellent comedy when one is able to turn an ordinary situation into something cleverly hilarious, something most people can relate to.... mainly because we can relate it to many situations we find in our own every day lives...even situations which at the time were to us in real life quite serious or just very normal ..... comedians of that era were able to actually turn such situations into something quite hilarious.... in a very nuanced and simple but excellent way of bringing us all down to earth as it were, helping one to see the funny side of life in general. Hence helping one to also not to take oneself and life in general too seriously every once in a while....comedy is an art and today I am afraid there are very few who are able to perform as well or as excellently as those actors and actresses of yester year who really were the greats of comedy. My question to you, why are you in essence trying to once again disparage and compare by use of certain descriptive nouns within a script of a comedy show as a format (to in your mind) felt it necessary to bring down other comedy shows of a bygone era simply because of the use of certain nouns within a script in their shows.... and state things like that this is why George and Mildred have survived as a comedy show.... ?? Why are the other comedy shows not up to your so-called standard... ?? It is ridiculous that people of the younger generation cannot seem to get over themselves and frankly are not respectful of generations gone by whose upbringing was indeed different and even far worse of than those of today.... we had far less to laugh at but we were a strong and tough generation feeling out way in the world that we lived in and worked hard so that the generations of today can have it much more easy than we ever did....yet it seems that your generations do not want to allow the older generations of today to enjoy the comedies of yester year programs and shows that we all knew so well and enjoyed simply because they were hilarious....and at the end of the day made our lives worth living in very difficult and hard times....but all the younger generations of today can do is criticize and admonish instead of appreciating what you all came from and could learn from.....let us older generations be given the privilege of enjoying in our retiring years the comedies of old all of them without endless and frankly mindlessly criticizing the nuance of language used in these wonderful old comedies and films of yester year.
